They could very well have been sleeping in the car in rest areas and other similar places all along. They were caught because people finally had an accurate description and tag number of a vehicle to look for. Everyone was focused on white vans and box trucks, not burgandy sedans up until last night. Even with that it was plain dumb luck that some sharp eyed folks actually spotted them and turned them in.
