I'll take a reference cooler over aftermarket solutions 99% of the time. Reference coolers are usually very good and you know what to expect because they've been reviewed by 30 different tech sites. Aftermarket solutions can end up being louder and sometimes worse on temps. I'm not basing my decision to buy some non ref card on one review especially if you don't know if the one site reviewing it wasn't paid off to give it a favorable review.
This thread is the perfect example of why not to buy non reference. He couldn't find one review of the 570HD and it ends up being louder and probably worse temps than the reference.

Is that a joke? Reference cooling is loud and sucks compared to Asus and MSI cooling solutions

Actually, the reference cooler for the GTX 580 and 570 are pretty quiet and work quite well. As good as the Asus direct CU, probably not, but I bought my card 3 months ago. Plus, it will fit a waterblock if I want to go with water. My point with this 570 HD card is that it just looks like a reference 560 cooler, which is most likely not as good as the reference 580/570 cooler.

The reference 580 cooler is pretty decent for noise. Even when I'm pushing the card (overclocked) hard on Folding@home which can load up to 88C , the noise is noticeable but unobtrusive. Like a gentle wshhhh sound.

Replacing the stock TIM with something better will lower the temps, which in turn keeps the fan from ramping up so much.

Even though it runs hotter, doesn't look like the reference cooler is any louder than a dual fan cooler when detracting the factory OC (Palit's card anyway, not sure about the Twin Frozr).

The heatsink on this HD card looks like it's pretty wimpy, probably doesn't even use the same type of vapour chamber cooling as reference. But it has DP and is shorter. Super...
