Got Robbed In Atlantic City - Treated Like Crap From Casino & Police

Cliffs at the bottom!

The Robbery:
My best friend and I checked in to Ballys Resort and Casino in Atlantic City this Tuesday 9/21 around 10pm. We got a room in the Dennis Towers, floor 7 right across from the elevators. We went out to play some games and got back in to our room around 2:15am. We locked our door, and went to bed.
He went to sleep, and I stayed up watching tv. Around 3:30am, halfway through cops I hear the door click like a key had been slid in to the lock. I ignore it thinking the sound is coming from the neighbors room.

The next thing I know I see the shadow of a head on the wall. I yelled to my roomate to wakeup just as a large African American man ,probably around 6ft-6ft 3in, and built like a linebacker comes in to the room.

My roomate was not awake at this point, and the man sees me awake and tells me to "calm down, all he wants is my wallet and phone," and grabs my wallet off of the dresser by the tv (he does not get my phone.)

I instantly take off I chase him down the hallway wearing only a pair of gym shorts, no shirt or shoes, always about 15ft behind him. The floors in the tower are shaped like a "U." He ran to the end of the "U" and went down 2 flights of stairs, with me in chase.

We came out on the fifth floor and I chased him to the other end of the "U." Where he went down another flight. I continued giving chase, and at this point we ran the whole "U" again, (all the time I am screaming for police / security.) At this point he slowed down since I was catching up and said "I dropped your wallet back there man" I didnt believe him and continued to give chase. We descended 2 levels and were now in the "Stand Pipe" area of the hotel. As he got down the next flight of stairs he slammed the door in my face, when I got through it all I could hear was the sound of a door slamming.

In that hallway were 2 doors, then a side staircase. I tried 2 of the doors but they were both alarmed so I figured I would try the last door, it was a black door that led to the street and by the time I looked out no one was there, so I was not sure where he was at this point.
I then ran upstairs and found my way to the casino floor where I was able to get a security guards attention.

The Security:
I give my story quickly to the security guards who then take me back up to the room. We meet my roomate at the door and he is still wondering what the heck happened. After taking my statement the one good security guard takes me on a walkthrough of exactly where I chased the guy, we end up at the same black door we had ended up earlier, and this time there was a security guard posted there. We walked back in to the casino and went back up to the room.

At the room we were met with other members of the Ballys Casino security team. I gave them my statement that a key card was used (in my opinion) to enter the room, and they called in a locksmith to check the digital card entry records.

The records show us entering at 2:15 and then another use at around 3:45 which they claim was my best friend, though he does not remember using the card (3:45 am was while I was still giving chase.)

While we are waiting for the police to arrive they claim that I did not close the door correctly. I know I closed the door as my best friend and I remembered because as I closed the door I made a joke about how the "Do Not Disturb" sing on the door had the word Moleste on it, juvenile I know but I have an eidetic memory so that triggered me remmebering closing / locking the door (I did not use the bar lock, anti-entry lock though.)

The Police Arrive:
The police arrive and I begin to give my statement. The police do not let me even finish my statement before they begin the questioning. There are 2 officers, an overweight caucasian male, and an african american (I do not have their names at the moment.)

As the African American leaned against the wall checking the sports scores on his iphone, the overweight one began questioning me. As I gave my statement he told me my story was "too good."

I replied that I have an eidetic memory and if he didnt believe me I could walk him through it just as I had the security guard. He responded by asking me to explain "eidetic."

After I finished most of my statement the office asked me "was I sure that my best friend wasn't the one to rob me since his key was last used." I replied that I knew the difference between my best friend (a 5ft 6in skinny white kid, and a 6ft+ African American Male.)

He then asked me "be honest how much have you had to drink tonight," to which I replied "1 rum and coke" and my best friend replied "1 beer," he then replied "I find that hard to believe." The other cop then asked me why I hadn't done anything when I first saw the shadow, and I said "I wasn't sure if it was my best friend in the bathroom.: The African American cop then said "How could you not know if he wasn't in the other bed." To which I replied all the lights were out.
The police office pressed the issue to a poitn where I got exasperated and took him into the room and tried to explain. It did not end well with the officer telling me not to take such a tone with him. I replied that it was pointless trying to explain about my friend being in bed or not since he want the one that robbed me it didn't matter.

Both officers then said "our story did not add up, and are we sure we werent like some other people that come to Atlantic City, get a prostitute, and she stole our money and we were inventing this to cover that" I replied we were not and he once again stated why was I so sure my best friend didnt rob me (once again I said my best friend is white, this guy was black.)

the officer then asks my friend for his ID. My friend produces his military ID. He is a marine and just returned from Iraq in Late February. The overweight police officer then asked him what he would call him if he were in the military, to which my friend replies "Corporal."

The office then continues to call my friend Corporal saying he was calling him that to "show his respect. The office was doing it in a snide way and backed my friend in to a corner literally calling him corporal every other word questioning him as to why his key was the last one used. My friend gets exasperated and snaps at the officer telling him to stop acting like he was the one to rob me when obviously he wasnt. The officer replies not to take that tone with him.

I interrupt trying to ask how all this is relevant and the officer cuts me off and says "I'm talking now." I let him finish and begin to ask my next question about trackingt he suspect and the officer again says "I'm talkign now." I respond "I know and respect that I just have a question before you go on." and he responds agian "I'm talking now."

I at no point raised my voice to him. I then say "I am not trying to disrespect you I am just trying to understand this before you continue." He replies again for me to "stop cutting him off." He then explains the rest of the police report to me.

I ask about the security cameras and what was being done there and if we thought he was still in the hotel itself because he was not caught on any exit cameras." The cop then replies that its another reason why he doesn't think I am being completely honest. I reply I think he may be a guest at the hotel since he used a bucket of ice to prop open my door and could I see the elevator videos. (NOTE THE HOTEL HAS 0, YES 0 CAMERAS IN IT BESIDES THE EXITS) He then tells me he " doesnt work off speculation and to let him do his job."

I am beyond frustrated at this point and let him finish writing up the police report. As hes writing it up he is talking snidly to the other police officer and he keeps point over tomy friend and I and laughing, I could make out bits of a gay joke here and ther but nothing concrete.

I then ask the office "I drive stickshift here and dont have my license are we still ok to drive home" and one of the security guards says "I bet you do (meaning I was gay.)" And all the guards and the police officers laugh, which I found highly unprofessional.

The officer then gives me the police report number while telling me my story "still doesnt add up." I said fine whatever are we ok to pack our things and leave, and the officer tells me he would advise against that since we hadnt slept yet. I replied I think were good and I don't want to stay here. The officer lets us go but not without calling my friend corporal atleast 4 or 5 times just to get under his skin. As I swiped my card in the door to enter after the locksmith reset it, a light came up green, when we had previously swiped it was green and red. I mentioned it to the police as a final note and a security guard brushed it off as if it was nothing but leads me to believe our lock was messed up.We pack up in a fury and leave the hotel, on our way out the room we cant get the deadbolt to retract, we swipe both our cards and use the knob and neither of us can get it to retract, we told the lady at the front desk this as well (more proof our lock was screwed up.)

The Checkout:
At the checkout desk I file a complaint with the manager, I am still charged for the room (it was a comp room but I paid the taxes for it.) I told her I was the one who was just robbed to which she responses "someone was robbed in the hotel?" (you would think the manager would be one of the first to know.) I tell her my complaints about the security and how poorly we were treated and she promises to pass on my information to the district manager and he would get back to me within 48 hours (he doesnt.)

The next day I got a call from the head of casino security who was very good. He once again reiterated there are 0 cameras in the hotel for "our customers privacy" to which I replied then spend millions in security on cameras for their protection but none for their guests." and he apologized but said nothing more on the matter.

He said they are going over security camera footage and would get back to me. He also filed a disciplinary charge against 2 of the security officers who made the stickshift gay joke.

The Conclusion:
I filed a demenor complaint with the Atlantic City PD on the 2 responding officers citing the one picking the fight, laughing at the gay joke, and making other jokes about my friend and I, God knows if they will get any more than a slap on the wrist.

I filled a complaint with the head of security on the officers making the gay jokes, and he said he would take care of it.

I still have not head from any casino management.

Cliffs:
Room broken into while I was in it, I gave chase he got away.
Security and police make gay jokes about my best friend and I.
Refuse to believe our story.
Police office picks a fight with my best friend.
Continually demenaded by both police officer and security.
There are no cameras in the entire hotel but the casino has thousands, obviously we know who the casino cares about.

Darn OP, glad that you are ok. Not sure if it is a good idea to chase the bad guy. He might has knife/gun.

Why didn't you lock the safety lock/socket of the front door?

In Las Vegas the cops would have gotten the perps in 20 minutes. In Atlantic City - forget it the cops are too busy boinking hookers and eating donuts.

I got robbed (at gunpoint) and assaulted in AC in the very late 90's and the cops couldn't even be bothered to take a proper statement. They used the same BS blame the victim methodology.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not a cop hater by any means, just not a fan of the AC boys in blue.

I locked the dead bolt, I just forgot to swing the door "catch" bar in place so it couldn't swing open, which is a mistake I won't soon make again, I guess I figured the deadbolt was enough, and we were in an oceanview room which was really nice (flat panel, memory foam matresses, granite countertops in the bathroom, etc) so I was not worried about being robbed.

And I realize running after him was a mistake but he was in a tshirt and mesh shorts so I could tell he wasn't armed since his hands were free, plus I am just a frontier justice kind of guy, I couldn't live with myself if I just let him get away.

So why did you have to say you drove stickshift? Couldn't you of just asked if it was OK to drive without your license?

Though I still don't get how you didn't know if your friend was asleep or not in a bed in your room...

@1 I thought he woudl just say have your friend drive it, and he cant.

@2 I didnt know if I had fallen sleep or not and the room was really dark so I couldnt tell whether it was a pillow or something in the bed and he was in the bathroom.

If you had a sword, none of this would have happened, as you would have just stabbed the bla..African American guy. That's why I always carry my sword cane around. Not only does it look cool, but I can kill with it too. Everyone knows this.

Maybe I missed it, but did he really drop your wallet and did you find it?

Also, good for you filing a complaint about those 2 cops. I'm surprised your friend didn't go off on them.

sounds like a BS story to me!!

I have never stayed in a motel high priced/low priced that did not have some sort of latch that you use to secure your room from the inside just incase somebody does try to get in your room!

You should be glad the police didn`t charge you with wasting their time...

I had some cash but not too much at first I thought around $150, but it turns out I had put that money in my bag so it wasnt in my wallet when we went out gamblind, so I probably had $20-$50 in there when it was stolen. I had 3 credit cards and a ton of business cards tough, and the business cards really hurt because I had been at a party a week ago and 4 people gave me cards asking me to do some design work for them, and now I don't have their info.

I also had some movie tickets in there as well as a visa gift card, and my license. I cancelled everything though, and got a new license already.

Government workers. edit nm, I don't wanna be a cop/retirement basher. A few are good, very few in bigger cities where public lost control.

Damn dude that sucks, and it's bs that they don't have any other cameras... I live in Reno and you cannot walk anywhere in a casino without them being able to see you with at least 2 camera's.

Does however give me another reason to never go to Atlantic City.

I know some people who are crazy heavy sleepers that even when you shake and slap them they won't wake up.

Are you sure that's not after beer bonging all night at frat house? Normal people do not sleep that heavy..

One of my friends was like that. His roommate sometimes would just drag him out into the dorm hallway and leave him there. The worst part was that his girlfriend would call every morning to wake him up because the alarm clock would not do the trick. But of course the phone didn't wake him up, it woke up the roommate. So my roommate had to answer the phone, turn off the alarm, and wake up Mr. Comatose. Day in... day out...

Interesting. I wouldn't be surprised if this was an inside job - you heard a click (assuming this is the same click an electronic door lock makes?) so perhaps a master keycard was used - similar to what house cleaning staff have.

Whats scary is the robber knew that your door wouldn't lock (or perhaps all of the doors in the hotel don't lock properly?)

Eh lesson learned - always use the "deadbolt" to prevent unwelcome guests or house cleaning walking in becAuse someone took down your "do not disturb" sign ;)
