Got rear ended - rear axle is destroyed ... how bad is damage?

Ill share the story later .... immediate impact was left rear quarter panel and it basically tore off my rear axle... if you look underneath the car, there is just random metal lying on the ground, etc.

The car I was driving was a 2003 Honda Accord with 3800 miles....trunk is partially destroyed (including stuff in it:|), rear door doesnt open, driver door does not close right, but I am not sure if it is frame damage... the other vehcile took off my side view mirror, but there are no other marks on the door.

I am thinking it might be totalled... but no word yet. Would most cars who lose an axel + other damaged consider being totalled? The other vehicle was totalled to say the least.

No pics, camera was broken during the crash:|

I would say totalled...if it took the axle off, killed one door and damaged another, it's not going to be cheap..

Then again, I'm not a mechanic or insurance agent.

Yeah...if your rear door won't open from a rear-end collision, I'd say a decent probability it will be totalled. Leased or financed? Hope you have gap insurance!

it's front wheel drive. there is no rear axle.

Actually although there are no gears or anything like the axle that comes to a gearheads mind, given its just a spindle with wheels on it, its still an axle going just by what makes up an axle. A pencil with two doughnuts on each end is an axle 😀

I hope for your sake it is totalled. If they say it isn't, push for it.

A car so new with such heavy damage will probably never be the same again if it gets repaired.

You're a tool.

😛

Damn bro that sucks :| :|

I don't think it'd be considered totaled though....unless the car is completely mangled. That and it's barely a year old car - book value is still pretty high. There's almost no way to have over $10,000+ in damage from the description you're telling us (I'm saying this without havings pics of the damage though)

Can I have some doughnuts then? 😀

I'd say totalled. The members that make up the trunk surroundings cannot be bent back with any bit of ease, and the fact that you say even the driver door is messed up is a bad sign...

frame damage from the sound of it... yep its a gonner. Hope you have insurance.
I got rear ended. His insurance is covering it.

Even if it was my fault, why buy a new car if you cannot afford the insurance?😕

I know it is front wheel drive... I didn't know what to call the rear "axle" .... so I called it "axle".

that would be true if your rear suspension isn't independent. and yours is.

Yea, I know, it doesn't sound like much damage, but who know's what is messed up. Oh yea, don't forget a side impact airbag... mine went off (my arm hurts like hell) ... I wonder if those are as expensive as normal airbags. If so, there is another $1k+. The car was bought in May *sigh*

How much damage does a car need for an insurance company to call it "totalled"?😕

You guys would never believe what did this damage.

Are we supposed to guess or just call up Dionne Warwick?

You would have one of those cars that drive down the street looking like they are sideways if you have this thing "repaired" and you would eat up tires like crazy. I wouldn't trust it in the rain either, prone to fishtail.
