Finally got my X1900XT (ATI branded full retail). I will be evaluating it extensively on the areas of:

- Performance (Synthetic as well as Real World Games)
- Image Quality (HDR+AA, HQAF, etc.)
- Video playback (DVD, HD, etc.)
- Overclocking (viablity, performance, etc.
- Other considerations (Installation, stability, noise, power, etc.)

If you have any info to help me get started to make sure i utilize the right drivers, let me know (looks like 6.3 "hacked/patched/chucked" drivers are the way to go afaik....and any other comments or quirks to look at.

Yes, I will be comparing this against a volt modded 7900GT. The system used is a Opty 165 @ 3.0GHz w/ 2GB of RAM...

This endeavor will probably take at least a weak, and i'll update it casually...who knows, maybe after all of this is done, I'll keep the x1900. ;)

update:

3DMark05 Scores:

Stock X1900XT (621/720) - 11667
Stock 7900GT (450/660) - 7999

Auto OC X1900XT (655/792) - 12244
Auto OC 7900GT (532/784) - 9286

OC X1900XT VSM (TBD) - TBD
OC 7900XT VHM (678/878) - 11511

3DMark06 Scores:

Stock X1900XT (621/720) - 5854
Stock 7900GT (450/660) - 4695

Auto OC X1900XT (655/792) - 6192
Auto OC 7900GT (532/784) - 5411

OC X1900XT VSM (TBD) -
OC 7900XT VHM (678/878) - 6582

The X1900XT waxes the 7900GT in 3DMark05 benchmarks, but strangely doesn't have the same kind of lead/performance in 3DMark06. Yes, this is all synthetic at this point, and I hope to get some good OC numbers from the X1900XT once i figure out its little idiosyncracies.

edit: to give you a general idea of what i'm looking at presently, it seems my concentration will be on Oblivion benchmarks and IQ. Here's a little taste to whet ya'lls appetite:

ATI 621 - 720 HDR-No AA No AF - Performance
Frames, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg
14599, 523496, 18, 66, 27.888

NV 520 - 720 HDR - No AA No AF - Performance
Frames, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg
13144, 554991, 1, 46, 23.683

More elaboration on these scores, and a ton of other scores as well as IQ shots to come...

Are you going to flash the BIOs to XTX since you are comparing it stock to a modified card? Or leave it stock or both maybe?

when will you be done and post results? i'm curious if the voltmodded 7900GT can keep up with a X1900XT stock/oc'ed.

I will if its easily reversible. Got some preliminary results and x1900xt stock is pretty good. Driver installation is a pita, especially if you plan to overclock; which leads me to some trouble i'm presently having: I cannot OC this card with ATItool or Powerstrip readily. It keeps on reading 500Mhz/600MHz core/mem, and if i try to push it back to stock speeds, system hangs. =/

time to play with it some more...

Personally, I couldn't get mine to overclock very well through ATI tools for some reason. Even after adjusting the core voltages to 1.4Volts and seeing that the temps never went above 66 at that voltage, I don't understand why. When I put the volts at 1.425 I got as high as 80 C, then my system crashed.

I tried various things too. Moving the slider bars seperately to find the highest values on each, letting ATI Tool "Find Max Core" and "Find Max Mem", plugging in the numbers in the tab above the sliders (which was weird because even after 9800 series clock lock disabled and 1.4 V of core juice it was still interupting a weird 698.93 every time I hit "Enter" to set it at 700.00. ???

So I think I've given up for the meantime on overclocking mine (partly because I want to spend more time actually playing my games).

I do know others have had a lot more success with it though. I might try Riva tuner since I'm already a little familiar with it from overclocking my 7800's.

Hope all goes well.

Alright, here's some early results with some synthetic benchmarks. I'm still having problems tweaking the x1900 to go beyond the overdrive autoclock settings, as it keeps crashing with ati tools (any help here would be appreciated) :(

3DMark05 Scores:

Stock X1900XT (621/720) - 11667
Stock 7900GT (450/660) - 7999

Auto OC X1900XT (655/792) - 12244
Auto OC 7900GT (532/784) - 9286

OC X1900XT VSM (TBD) - TBD
OC 7900XT VHM (678/878) - 11511

3DMark06 Scores:

Stock X1900XT (621/720) - 5854
Stock 7900GT (450/660) - 4695

Auto OC X1900XT (655/792) - 6192
Auto OC 7900GT (532/784) - 5411

lol....with my single core cpu, i can barely break 6k in 06 (7900 gtx sli oced)

in 05, i barely get 13k....

i almost jumped to dual core, but in the end, dual core wouldn't really affect my real world gaming performance since i game at 1680 x 1050

god an NVidiot ... You maybe the worst this forum has seen : ! I want the good old days back :! the balance of power has fallen and new Idiot rise so that they can obtain the rank of rollo :! but this Idiot is too stupid to even get backed up by other higher ranking Nvidia Fanboy.

funny thing about you fanATIcs, you try to convince others so blindly to go ATI, yet when someone wants to do this assessment firsthand, you call it BS? lol

as i said, i have both cards here now, if you don't want to help me look at both of these cards accurately, please troll somewhere else ;)

Is '05 really CPU limited/multi-threaded? I didn't think Dual-Core really helped until '06

you call me a fanboy, yet i have BOTH nvidia AND ATI cards lol...makes so much sense eh? troll elsewhere please :p

and no i don't associate myself with the other "higher ranking nVidia fanboys" lol

guess the ATi chumps are getting a little worried about first hand results in comparisons, eh?

but don't fret, as i said, i would like advise and comments to maximize the x1900xt potential, because it may replace my present 7900gt ;)

lets stop slinging words and post the real performance gains. the numbers are what the arguments are concerned with here... not excluding the cash spent.

I dont think any of this is worth whining over with comments like... fanboy this and your ghey that and im leet this... that stuff is just stupid. If i had the money id have bought the x1900xtx...just like anyone else...because it performs better. But since im not rich and i care about money... the 7900gt performance is damn good for the cash. So, take all your problems and boasts and complaints and insults and shove them up your asses while I game and enjoy myself...without a care as to how someone else tries to fill the void that should have been their ego.

I would like to see the performance difference benchmarked however. I find computer hardware interesting. But if I have to sift through a bunch of sniveling babies to get to the content that..im only slightly interested in reading... i think ill just pass.

slight update; gave up on the overclocking for now and started looking at video playback quality via AVIVO. Thus far, things are a little disappointing because using Exclusive Full Screen mode with VMR9 Renderless, i'm getting some choppiness in playback at 1920x1080. I also see signs of aliased lines that are supposed to be the hallmark of the AVIVO solution. :( Time to tweak some more..

Thanks for taking one for the team. I wish you had pushed your voltmodded 7900GT further before comparing the cards, but your numbers should be close enough.

Warning, Agenda unearthed.

Please do us a favor and keep these 'benchmarks' to yourself.

Here is the combination that I've used with the best luck:

CAT 6.3's
ATI Tray Tools (when installing this make sure you disable overclocking when prompted)
ATI Tool Beta 14

Make sure you disable the ATI Smart and ATI Hotkey in the Services menu under Admin Tools. Restart your computer

Now you can use ATI Tool to oc to your heart's content. Just set the voltages like you have been, making sure to apply before going back to the main screen. You should be able to hit ~700-725MHz at 1.425-1.475 on the core and 800-875MHz at 2.1-2.2V on the mem. Set the VDDCI to 1.5V to get some more stability out of it. You'll probably want to increase fan speed to 50-80%.

Sorry if I explained more than you needed but I wasn't sure how familiar you are with the new ATI cards.

I'm having a bit of trouble with choppiness in Quake 4 on X1800XT Crossfire and I'm not sure if it is due to heat issues with the GPUs or the dual core processor. I've heard of choppiness on dual core and also wondered about thermal throttling. I ran Prime95, Folding@Home, the ATI Tool x-wing artifact scanner thingy, and a virus scan to warm things up before running throttle watch. This combination ran all night long with no throttling, so that is eliminated as a culprit at least. The CPU gets up to about 67°C after running like that overnight though, which is pushing the limits of how hot I like things to run. It only runs about 56°C when running Folding@Home or a game though.
