The Radeon also has sliders for brightness and color. Like the Nvidia card, it controls everything. Brighten up the desktop, the games will go with it. Problem is, that may make the desktop brighter than you want. It still befuddles me why you guys cant get your games bright enough by using the in game settings. I don't have a single game that I have this problem with, again this is with a V3, or Radeon. I'm sure if I still had an Nvidia (last card was a TNT1), I'd be able to do the same. I never even have to max out the settings. We talked about Unreal/UT before. I use the video cards default gamma/brightness. Brightness setting in Unreal/UT is .6 on the Voodoo and .7 on the Radeon. Any higher and its too bright, and you start getting washed out colors.

So both ATi and nVidia have a universal gamma slider which affects everything? Thankyou, that's what I wanted to know. :)

Just out of interest Oldfart, what gamma do you have your desktop set to? Mine's at 1.5.

Everyone YES i am still having troubles with q2, getting a ridiculous 48FPS in timedemo 1.
Cs FPS seems to flucuate a lot esp when a lot of action is involved i get around 20-50 but when im still i get 71. I remember with my v3 I could get 71 while walking. With the Radeon fps drop when i walk!!!!

*sigh* CAN anyone take a look at my openGL properties i posted above? and tell me if any of the settings are incorrect.

Im gonna try sliding that brightness setting for the desktop and see if my games are brighter.

OK the destop slider works for games as well.... but its kinda hideous having to change the slider everytime you wanna play a game because moving that slider makes my desktop display TOO BRIGHT

WOW! Now I finally see what people are talking about when they say nVidia has bad looking 2d. I cranked the Gamma up from it's great, and bright looking 1.0 to 1.5, and it looks discusting. Back down to 1.0, and ahhhh, all is looking good again.

I too do not understand why many of you must make radical changes to get a bright enough image in these games. Yes, I did have to bump up the brightness a notch or two inside of some games, but nothing much more than about 1/2 way. This is the same with 3 monitors, and either the V3 or GTS card. Monitor's Brightness level control at 89, and Contrast at 93. Cheap $150 17" monitors at that.

RobsTV,

RobsTV, Unless you own a 'tron. Then no amount of tweaking the gamma, brightness and contrast controls will provide a good 2D image. I had a Gladiac and had to switch to a Radeon with my Sony 200PS (17"). At 1280x960, the Gladiac image was awful, it didn't look too great at 1024x768 either (wasn't blurry, but somehow it gave me eyestrain when programming). The 2D on the Radeon is about as good as my Matrox G400 was.

Ajay,
You seem to have misread my posts meaning.
My Visiontek's GF2 GTS cards has 100% perfect 2d the way I use it.
If I had cranked up the gamma to what some others use, 1.5, then yes, it would look like crap. Fortunetly, it is perfect, and plenty bright and sharp at a normal gamma setting of 1.0.
But, it makes me wonder how many people may be judging a card wrong, by using a gamma setting that makes it look bad? If I had to use 1.5 gamma, I would not keep the card.

TAZ, am I missing something? Those tweaks are D3D settings correct? How would they have any impact on OpenGL??

KeNDoGG, Until you are getting 100-150 fps 1024 x 768 in Q2, something is SERIOUSLY wrong with your setup. I would concentrate on that before I did anything else. Is a clean install an option?

Ok just to clarify things Ill tell you my current setup

Windows Me
Sony 200ES 17"
700mhz Classic Athlon, ABIT KA7
384mb PC133
Radeon 32mb DDR, running 4x AGP (Ive tried disabling it but same difference) Using 7068 Drivers.

UltraWide I printed that page out and followed exactly step by step. Still Getting a measly 48FPS :( *SIGH*

Can someone please take a look at my openGL tab and tell me if anything is set incorrectly.

Oldfart I wanna try everything and anything possible before I take reformatting into consideration; this is my last resort, honestly I doubt itll change anything.

Is there any justification in achieving 48 fps in q2????

Sorry you don't like ATI but you may want to try somthing first. Bottom line you can't install an ATI without removing the drivers from old card first. GO here and read my post it may help this has worked somtimes but not always. when it did'nt I ended up doing a complete win install to correct but try this first. link to thread

KeNDoGG, sorry to see you are having so much trouble. It sounds like you are pretty frustrated. You made a good choice going with a Radeon. It really is a good card. You have a driver issue of some sort that is likely caused by some remnants of the old video card. When you change from the V3 to the Radeon, what do you change in your Q2 and HL config? How do D3D games work? How about Q3? I see you have it, but didn't say if it is working well. The main problem you mention is Q2 and HL/CS. Note that both of these games use a 3dfx miniGL when using a Voodoo3 card. You MUST be sure you are using the default opengl, not a 3dfx version. I can do this. When I get back home from my trip, I'll send you my Q2 config.cfg, you can paste it in and see if that does anything for you. I'll do the same for HL. I know you dont want to do a clean install. You don't have to. I went from a V3 to a Radeon without having to do that. If nothing else works, it may be your only choice.

BTW, I cant get that link to work for the Radeon properties that you posted.

How in the heck did you get 4x to work on a KA7? From all of my research(plenty of forums) nobody's been able to get that to work. What I get and everyone else I've talked too is a blank screen when window's first starts. Is it fixed in the new drivers or something? Besides that you should be getting better numbers for your setup.

ya q3 is not working well either.. getting low fps...

I have not changed any configurations in my games... Didnt touch anything.

D3D i have not tried because i dont believe in playing games in D3D. I refuse to play in D3D because it looks ugly and its slow.

Wetsproket: I am running 4x agp ... my bios says so... and no blue screen says so.. ya i know im supposed to have better performance but i have yet to see that...

I wanna say thankyou to everyone thats been trying to help me out.

To really know if your running at AGP 4X use WCPUID from tweakfiles. As far as your bad performance goes, I think atigart.exe is overwriting your viagart.exe when display drivers are installed. Rename all instances of atigart.exe on your hard drive and disable atipolab with msconfig. Set bios to 2X and fast writes disabled at least for now. Reinstall drivers the old fashioned way. For this procedure go to www.rage3d.com, articles, reinstall the old fashioned way. If driver installation errors on atigart.exe skip file. ATI tech support says to install VIA AGPgart driver in standard, not turbo mode. Try this first, you can simply reinstall in turbo mode later. Then switch bios to 4X. Good Luck

Are you running in 16bit or 32 bit? Did you remove all reistry settings pertaining to 3dfx, and are all the files removed from your windows dir, sometimes uninstalling won't remove everything.

First of all, I got 40ish fps in Q2 with my Rage128, not even pro, and a Celeron 500, so your system is way beyond messed up. Reinstalling will 99% solve your problem, which is probably not uninstalling your V3 drivers and deleting everything the V3 installed.

I hope you aren't saying you still have Q2 and HL setup to use the 3dfx card. That won't work. You MUST change your configuration to use the Windows default opengl driver, not a 3dfx specific driver. I'm still on my laptop here so I can't look at anything on my home PC. I beleive when you start Q2 if you bring down the console, you will see information on the OpenGL driver used. Take a look there and see what it says.

D3D i have not tried because i dont believe in playing games in D3D. I refuse to play in D3D because it looks ugly and its slow.
Where do you come up with that? There are games out that will ONLY play in D3D. The QuakeX and HL games aren't among them, but there are plenty of games that play quite nicely in D3D.
