Got my genetic testing results

I paid for 23and me a while back just to see what kind of things would show up. Kinda interesting I guess... not quite as interesting as I had hoped. I reaaally wanted HIV, malaria, and norovirus resistance lol... 0/3 just like most of the world....

Good stuff though if you are curious.

what the hell do you have to do to complete the test? Multiple choice psych questionnaire, blood samples mailed to them, and semen samples?

Yeah and how much do they take?

Thank you for posting your results on this public forum. I am now gradually attempting the process of cloning you...

how credible is this, there are heritage testing ones that are totally bogus. would be interesting to take results of two companies and see if they even remotely match

Got it for $100 when they had a special price. They send you a spit vial for the genetic material. As far as crediability, the SNPs are accurate but the interpretation is kinda up for grabs in a lot of cases. You can download the raw data to be analyzed elsewhere or in the future when genetics are understood more.

edit: Yes I am asian. Turns out my mother's side came from the middle east area according to the test.

How's that? The raw data is accurate. I guess the actual analysis can be questioned.

Generally DNA tests take like 2 weeks and a significant amount of lab work is involved. $100 just doesn't seem right.

Someone here should send them dog or cat DNA. I would love to see if they can tell it's not a human. It shouldn't even be that hard.

wikipedia has a list of animals sorted by chromosome number
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_organisms_by_chromosome_count
Dogs have 78 chromosomes. Humans have 46 (23 pairs).

Right and this took 6 weeks to process. Price by itself doesn't dictate anything, it just means it has moved slightly past the early adopter's stage in its lifecycle. @ the cat/dog comment... ignorant and proud of it I presume? A simple google search would have yielded pictures that show 23andme's karyotype plotting ability.

And by god there are a shitload of cynics around here... I have a a text document with all the SNPs present in my genome. It totals to about 25MBs in size and has it sorted by chromosome, genes and specific SNPs. It doesn't matter what the results necessarily say atm, I have the data for a complete analysis at sites such as SNPwiki or whatever else might come into existance.

The muscle fiber thing means that I lack a certain type of protein that are used specifically in fast twitch muscles. This protein is thought to have sturctural and signaling functions. I have a less efficient version of the protein for fast twitch muscles. This means I am less likely to be a world class sprinter but it also means that I can potentially build fast twitch muscle faster since the muscles can get damaged more easily without that protein.
