Not necessarily. Most states actually state the law is you only should start stopping on a yellow light provided you can safely stop in time.

yep i think around here its also about slowing down. if you take caution, slow when the light goes yellow, you dont have to stop by law. but if the light hits yellow and you speed up, it doesnt matter if you make it though. you just ran a red light in legal terms.

You'd plea "no contest" if you didn't want to insult the court/judge.
In NY anyway, the ticket (it is a sheet of thermal paper printed from the police car) has two large boxes. One says Guilty, and the other says Not Guilty. You draw a large X through the one you don't want, provided the offense is one where you can plead by mail.

Example (PDF)

And this site gives a far better explanation.

That idiot was supposed to then complete his turn when that light turned red, clearing the intersection.

There should be a break definitely when that light turns red. Again allowing them to complete their turn and free the intersection.

The issue is that the traffic never cleared up until way too late, which isn't unheard of since people will continue through yellow lights if they're close enough when the light turns (unlike the OP :p). The light turned green on my side when he was only about halfway through his turn.

EDIT:

I'm not talking about whether you have to stop or not, but rather how they will typically (in my experience) time traffic lights based on the speed of traffic.

that's different than pleaing in court.

and you are required to yield until they complete their turn. If you have a major issue with one person halfway through the intersection on a yellow holding you up for a split second then you need to chill a bit.

Of course I have to yield... do you think I want to flippin' hit the guy? None of that changes the fact that he shouldn't have been in the middle of the intersection if he couldn't complete his turn in a timely manner.

Yes, doing things like that does annoy me, but it's all part of a larger issue around here (and in other places) that I never really noticed in New York. Ultimately, people just couldn't care less about anyone else on the road. If they inconvenience you, then who cares! They got to where they needed to go faster, and they don't give a damn about you. When I was driving in New York and someone needed to merge onto the road that I was on, I simply moved over. If I needed to get back in for an upcoming turn/exit, I just put my turn signal on, and the person let me back in. Easy as pie. That doesn't work down here, because they won't let you back in. Fortunately, people around here drive so slowly that I just blow past them all (doing +5 MPH at the most) when I let them merge in. Of course, most people won't even move over when you need to merge in! :p

lol, gotta love the hardass hypocrites here. I bet the same ones telling you to obey the law...etc here are probably the jerk off's who don't signal half the time, cut others off and leave too late to work everyday....etc.

jesus you are clueless.

The proper way to make a turn in most places is to get out into the intersection and wait. In major intersections the time to cross the traffic lanes is minor to the time it takes to get out into the middle of no-man's land. Waiting at the light will result in almost no one going.

It's pretty damn rare for me to see someone at the last second making a turn unless they have also ran the red.

The whole running the red definition varies state by state. Some you have to clear the intersection. Some you have to cross just the frontmost line.

However the fact remains that you could get cited for blocking the intersection if you're still in the intersection when the red light appears. So just because you don't get a red light violation, you could get cited for something else.

That's not always the case. Get on I-17 South from Bethany Home in Phoenix - you can enter while green and it'll still be red before you get across.
Then that's obvious. Use judgement? Is this because of traffic? Not sure how yellow light timing laws are there, but in most cases you should be able to get across. Being someone who is in the city a lot, there's plenty of intersections where it's green but given traffic you might be blocking the intersection if you cross.

in most states you are allowed to be in the intersection 'on a red' and the other traffic must yield to you completing your pass. If you do something stupid like just sit there or the real idiot's move, reversing back to the beginning lane...they can ticket.

I thought I wrote this already, but it seems that I removed it during a rewrite. I actually do pull into an intersection from time to time; however, I don't do it and sit there. If I do it, that's because I noticed a break in traffic where I can turn. I'm normally only there for a second or two until I complete my turn. I don't like blocking people, and I won't do it. Sorry if that offends you! (Actually, I'm not sorry. :p) I should add that even though I don't do that, I have no trouble making it through intersections.

Although, it seems like you're grossly misunderstanding me here, because I've never stated that it's illegal. Also, trust me... someone doing that isn't nearly as annoying as other things. An example is how a woman (talking on her cell phone ) pulled out in front of me causing me to brake, and ended up making me miss the green light. Yeah... that added three minutes to my commute the other day. I hate it when my commutes take longer, because to me... the time spent driving from A to B is completely wasted time. Adding three more minutes to that means I'm wasting three more minutes of my day!

Move to your own island or get a real job where you can set your own hours and then commute off-hours.

If you have not cleared the intersection before it goes red; you should have stopped before entering.
Nope, that's not how it works. I know the red light cameras near me will only ding you if you enter after red, which is reasonable.

I'm glad you can get off so easily by treating people like they're beneath you. It's fucking pathetic that you assume that I don't have "a real job" simply because I hate wasting my time. Unbeknownst to you, I do adjust when I go in to avoid spending excess time in traffic.

Plus, everyone knows a job is real when it means you can afford a M3! :colbert:

LOL if everyone drove like you, there'd be certain left turns that could take an hour to complete when it's busy.

So, you think one extra car getting through each light cycle (the one that sat in the intersection when he couldn't go) would vastly speed up the turn lane? :p I think people actually paying attention and moving quicker when they get the green arrow would hasten the lane much more. Honestly, I don't know where you're from (and because of such, you may not understand the drivers around here), but I will assure you that I am the last person whose case you need to get on about slowing other people down.

First do you think that one extra car is really holding you up? Also it's much more than one extra car when everyone prepares the same way to make the turn. When you are out in the intersection where you should be at a major one, you saved 5 seconds of preparing for that turn now only needing much less of a window to safely make that turn.

If everyone just stayed back at the white line only 2-3 cars could probably make it rather than the 10+ that do.

This ironing is so delicious.

You do realize that you're simply trying to push your opinion about my opinion onto me like your opinion has been ordained by fucking God, Jesus and the Flying Spaghetti Monster's almighty noodly appendage. If you cannot comprehend what I'm saying by this point, then I'm not going to waste more of my time attempting to explain it to you anymore.

Does anyone by chance have a nice meme image of something like "and not two fucks were given"?

How do you barely run a red light.

If the light turned red while in the intersection; you chose to ignore the yellow.

Ask if you can take a drivers ed course in lieu of points.

You will still have to pay the ticket and for the class; but nothing on your record the first time. Second time; you usually will get no option.

^^^

Wife ran a partial red. She took the class to avoid the insurance hit and paid the ticket ($420).

You can also fight it and hope the cop doesn't show up to court. Cops are inundated with requests and MANY times they say "Fuck it" and don't show up....

Not at all and I understand you don't really care...you feel majorly inconvenienced because that rare occasion one extra guy makes his left turn just as your light turns green.

Take a chill pill and realize you share the roads.

When it comes to driving, I will certainly admit that I tend to care more about "the little things" than most other people do. I think it stems from inheriting my dad's personality where he was a pretty mellow person, but if he ever felt disrespected, he got really angry. I try to avoid ever inconveniencing others on the road, and I feel bad if I end up doing it. I also try to adjust what I do to avoid doing it again. An example is how at my old job, I stopped using the straight+right lane to go straight. I sat in it one day and realized that I was blocking the person behind me from turning right on red. That wasn't cool of me since I could just use the straight+left lane instead, which really doesn't affect me at all.

While I did bring up the guy blocking my advance and state that it annoyed me, it isn't really that big of a deal compared to other things that I see around here. My annoyance of it stems from my overall distaste for the way most southerners drive. It's kind of amusing when I remember how my apartment complex manager (who was from Rochester, NY) told me how I wouldn't like the drivers around here. Honestly, I thought she was just exaggerating, but she really wasn't. I've driven during white outs and other nasty events, but these drivers can be downright scary at times. Just a few weeks ago, I was at an intersection and the light turned green. For some reason, I didn't immediately proceed through the intersection like I normally would, and I was pretty fucking glad that I didn't. Why you ask? I watched as a guy passed through the intersection while completely ignoring the fact that he had a red light. There's a good chance that if I proceeded into the intersection like normal that the guy would have t-boned me on the driver's side. As much as my car has a high safety rating, I do not want to test out that collision at 45MPH.

Even parking lots aren't safe from these buffoons. I was driving through the local Kroger parking lot, and I noticed a car coming down an entrance that has a stop sign at the end. However, I also noticed that the car wasn't slowing down. As I saw the car come through the stop sign, I hit the brakes and so did the SUV. The woman looked rather flustered and I just motioned for her to continue moving (she was blocking my lane at that point). If I don't act all neurotic and think of all these drivers as idiots, I would have probably had a few accidents at this point.

neurotic <> defensive driving.

I am betting you are more a danger to others than you realize.
