The last two pics are the reason the shift lever is so loose. I'm missing a part of the clip, so there is a LOT of play, even when in gear, and it's a bit awkward to know what gear you are in.

Things to do: fix shifter, fix fuel gauge, cut out the rug and line it with something, possibly change the carburetor. The top on there now isn't the original top- that one is in the back. The only thing that doesn't fit is the window on the back, but it isn't that bad. There is also a bikini top that I'll end up throwing on in the summer with/without doors. Haven't driven it so much yet, as it needs to get registered and all, but it seems like it could be fun.

how much if you don't mind i'm asking??

It's a borrowed car more or less (for however long), but I'll be putting some stuff into it. Originally paid about $3800 for it though...not too many years ago. Had a good amount of work done to it since then (not with the body as much as drivetrain and such).

You Lucky Bastard! I had one similar, 1981 Renegade Hardtop. I sold it to get married long ago, I've missed it terribly. I've looked for another off and on since, but never found one that wasn't thrashed. Hope you enjoy that one.

🙂 It has a hardtop+doors, but those will probably be sold off. Summer is coming up, and I'm told the hardtop can be a hassle anyways.

Well, I'm told it has an antifreeze leak (very small), but haven't seen it yet (just parked it on the driveway a couple hours ago), but I know better and I'll wait until morning. I think a small oil leak too. Nothing major...engine was rebuilt in '08 I believe.

Wow, that's a real piece of shit you have there. And I mean that as a compliment, it's a CJ7 - it's supposed to look that way 🙂

Love the 8-ball shifter.

Depends which one you're reading. 😛 I decided to register there, even with the odd rules at sign up. Wanted to make sure I could get the shifter situation settled, and the fuel gauge will be my next task.

Different screen name, but same year Jeep and same issue w/shifter.

You're in NC? And you have hard doors for it, too? LMK if you get ready to sell it, and if they're the paddle-style handles.

I'm this same name over there, too.

i just recently picked up my painless wiring chasis harness for my 78 cj7 and am about to replace all the electrics.

i wouldn't get rid of the hard top and doors. when you want them, you'll regret it. it's getting tougher to find good hard tops and doors in good shape these days, so i'd keep them with the jeep.

i've had my cj7 for almost 8 years and will never let it go. even though the fj40 gets more time these days.

good luck with the jeep.

Hm. I'll see. If money situations were better, I'd consider keeping them, but depends at the moment. If the four wheeler that will be selling goes, then keeping them might be a consideration. They are just a pain to store too.

Yep, I'm in NC. Guitar is my screen over there. I have the hard doors and top, I'm thinking they are going to be sold as a package (I'll ask, as I'm selling them for someone), and I'll ask about that too. It won't be too far off though.

they aren't that much of a pain to store. i have two hardtops, cj and tj, two sets of hard doors (same), soft doors, soft tops, bimini top, tonneu cover, windscreen and the hardtop and doors for the FJ. they take up some room and they are cumbersome, but not that much of a pain.
someday, you'll want it, and you'll regret getting rid of them.

out here, hard doors and a hardtop are a good thing. i know in nc you don't really have the weather for it, but you never know.

Well, maybe I'll keep it- we'll see. I don't have anywhere to really put it here, maybe I could clear room in the shed for it..

I was just in the car trying to test out the audio, this is the deck it has: http://www.continentalimports.com/in_acs_2500.html

:\ There is no bass at all, and sound quality is pretty bad. The Amigo I had sounded way better- could be the speakers, could be the head unit. I'm not sure on that, so any insight would be appreciated.

Plug in a different speaker, and see what happens?

Or, plug in a different deck and see what happens 😛

Dunno, I think u just gotta narrow down the problem.

ummm... the cj7 isn't exactly known for it's sound handling qualities. when they were designing the cj3 and up, they looked at off road capabilities and figured anyone using the jeep for what it's designed for wouldn't be listening to the radio.

Never expected it to be, but this thing hasn't been used for "what it was built for" for a few years I'm guessing (besides pulling trailers up hills and such). I'm going to see about upgrading it though. There are two speakers right behind the head that are clipped to the rollbar and look like they were just placed up there and can fall apart at any moment, and then there is the two stock ones in the dash. The main thing ATM is the gas gauge however...

Thanks.

So I have to drive it tomorrow to get it inspected before it can get registered...does that make any sense?

Yeah, I always thought that was stupid.

Good thing is, you get a safety-only inspection. No worrying about whether you pass the emissions sniffer or not.

Yep. Well, it inspected quickly and passed...thank God. I put new blades on it right before inspection, and put one on wrong in the rush...shifter is fixed now too (temporarily if not fully).
