Got my car back from the dealership - They FORGOT to secure the lug nuts!

So I got my car back from the dealership (Mazda) and they didn't tighten down my lug nuts. I had driven 20 miles and my car started to shake badly, so I pulled over. When I did, I noticed I only had 3 lug nuts on my car, and they were just about to fall off.

It is a pain in the ass, what kind of compensation should I demand from the dealership?

I was thinking of asking for a new set of tires for the headache. I mean, if I didn't pull over and notice that there were only 3 lug nuts on the vehicle, my tire would have fallen off at like 80 mph!

WTF.

Update:

They service rep just called me back and sounded like he was about to cry. I left a message as I said above with strong concern in my voice. He said he wants me to bring in my car tomorrow and at the very least they will fix everything that is wrong with the car. He will be sitting down with his superiors later. He also told me that the store manager called a department meeting about the voicemail that I left and said that at the very least activity like this would lead to the termination of a job. Suggestions on what I say tomorrow? Do I go in there with my arms all up in a fuss and yelling, threaten to sue/go to the news? Or do I go calmly in there (even thought they put my life at risk by my wheel almost falling off) and take whatever they give me without question?

Final Update:

As I posted below I was told to bring it in by 5 PM on Wed (it is about a 50 min drive from my house with traffic, so I had to take an hour off work early to make it on time). So I get about 2 miles away and decide to call them to make sure everything was OK. Well, when I called I talked to one of the other service reps, the guy who I was supposed to meet called in sick today... He told me I couldn't come in and that all the mechanics were gone. I started chewing him out on the phone about how this has been going on so long and that the guy told me to come in anytime before 5 PM and they would take care of me. I was like WTF.

I was about to lose it - esp. with all the traffic for the holiday - it was terrible.

So I told him that I will be there in about 5 mins to discuss this in person. Once I get there, I demand to see a manager and I take a strong tone with him fully expecting him to say sorry, come back another day and we will tighten your lug nuts. He then told me to wait a min and he went and talked to the boss. Well the boss said to go ahead and take care of me (they had a couple other guys that changed the tires), so I was like, finally, at least the trip wasn't a total waste.

I walk back in the garage with them and talk to the service manager and ask him if he will put on my snow tires from this thread and he said no problem, they will do it for free. I was like cool, things were starting to go good.

So they swap my tires and the boss comes out to talk to me, saying that he is sorry for all of the trouble, and he gives me the next 3 oil changes for free. Cool, about the level of service I was expecting and I got my tires changed for free. All in all, I left a a pretty good mood when I was done.

I do tell you one thing though, I would have lost it totally if they would have said that they couldn't do it right then I would have went nuts and probably had the police called on me.

Jeez... that's pretty bad. And it probably put a lot of stress on the bolts.

is 80mph the legal speed limit? if not, you are the liability. also, did you check the lug nuts before you started driving?

good luck. I am sure the dealership will deny it. truthfully there is no way to prove it either. I had a nissan altima that lost a hub cab after a tire change. No big deal $$$ wise but the place that did it would not do crap. Best to inspect before leaving the shop.

Do you check your lugnuts prior to driving ?

<sigh>... typical Anandtech, blame the OP. If I get an oil change, should I crawl under the car and make sure the oil filter is there too?

It stands to reason that the same thing would have happened at a legal speed.

I would have driven back RIGHT THEN and demanded immediate compensation.

First, they replace that wheel (IIRC you can damage a wheel like that).
Get them to agree to repair any damage to that wheel hub or whatever, but you'll have to get it checked out at an independent shop I would imagine.
And I think a year's worth of free maintenance sounds like another good starting point :D

I went to "Expert Tire" once to get a new set of tires on my old Firebird. After they pulled out my car I hand checked all the lug nuts. My wife (who was my GF at the time) was nagging me about doing it, saying it was a waste of time when suddenly one of the lug nuts popped off in my hand!

I made them tighten the lug nuts again, only I didn't release they OVER tightened them. They ended up damaging my brake pads. I had to get them replace prematurely.

Needless to say, I don't goto "Expert Tire" anymoe.

Take lots of pictures.. then write a letter to your dealer and say you want the tires replaced because of damages caused when you were forced to brake hard or something like that..

Then, contact local news station when they don't agree..

A month or two back, a coworker's GF actually had the wheel come off while she was driving to work, probably going about 45. They'd just had it at a tire place the week previously.

Next time, try Sears.

Complain to the dealer first, and if you don't get any satisfaction, complain up the line in writing to the manufacturer (see your manual for addresses, etc.)

Cattlegod: I would seriously get a lawyer and sue. They put your life at serious risk. You're going to get a heck of a lot more than new tires out of this.

Do you even comprehend what you read??? He didn't say he DID go 80mph, it was more of a "What if?".

Sheesh. Even if he WAS going 80mph, that's not uncommon on a freeway. Either way, 40, 50, 60mph, he still could have been seriously hurt in an accident resulting from THEIR NEGLIGENCE!

He could be getting a new car, with spinning wheels and dice in the mirror if he plays his cards right.

Braking hard would not damage his tires to the point of needing to be replaced. He might have lost a few cents worth of rubber. He's better off talking to a trained mechanic about what COULD be damanged by what happened. For one, they owe him a couple of lugnuts. :) And as I said, it probably put a tremendous amount of stress on the bolts that hold the wheel on. If that's the case, that's a potential safety hazard and he might be able to get some parts replaced.

He's better off asking for things that WERE directly affected by this than things that have nothing to do with the incident... that would just look like he's trying to capitalize on someone else's mistake.

Anyone who forgets to tighten the lugnuts should NOT be working on cars.

That would be similar to a pilot forgetting to fill the plane up with gas for an intercontinental flight.
