I had this happen to my truck(when my wife was diving it) after a brake inspection, the wheel did come off at 45mph, I asked for a new wheel because the old one was jacked the manager was a prick and said that nothing was wrong with the old one. I told him no problem I would write up a letter and have him sign that if accident happened because of their neglect and un willingness to replace the wheel they would be liable, he said he wouldn't sign it so I told him I would ask my lawyer write it up and he will ask you to sign it, he decided he would replace my wheel.

This place always amazes me with how many idiots think about suing first.

If the manager was a prick to me after something like that happened ...he would be sucking on my fist ;)

He is NOT going to get a new car, 6 months free gas, years woth of oil change or nearly any of the other crap you guys are posting. If he goes in and is polite he should get new studs, nuts, oil change (they always give this if you complain), a new tire (may have un-even tread now) and maybe a new rim.

but if its any more then that i would be really amazed. Unless the OP wants ot be a total dick and sue them over this even then it won't get far.

oh and you NEVER use a impact wrench when tightining stuff on a car. You can do a LOT of damage. What ticks me off is some of the local oil change places are uesing them to put the oil plug back on.

Yep, that is why I had to change my girlfriend's oil pan on her CRX. The only thing I have used an impact gun on to tighten was on the castle nut going into the ball joint to hold my knuckle to my lower control arm on my Integra, and even then very carefully. The only reason for that was it was impossible to do without air because the ball joint will just continue to spin.

Used to be an asst. manager for a Sears auto center.

Don't get your hopes up - most likely they'll term the guy that made the mistake, fix whatever is wrong, hook you up with a few washes / oil changes and be done with it.

Think about it - no lawyer will take your case if you decide to sue. Deep down you know it and I know it. The "what if" story really isn't going to hold up - you take a risk just by driving on the road.....

Does it suck that this happend? You bet. Did it happen at the store I worked for? Once - that I knew about when I was on duty. We calmed the guy down, fixed his studs, aligned his car, gave him a $50 GC and he was happy as a clam. We termed the mechanic that signed off on his work-order.

Nope, going to try and make it down to the dealership today.

Well, if I were the manager at the dealership, you would have just weakened your case considerably by not coming in the next day. Now it looks like it's no big deal to you. IMO

I called saturday and they were closed. I called Yesterday and they said they didn't have anyone there to take care of me. I called today and the guy said to come in by 5:00 PM tomorrow. If they were that concerned than they would have picked my car up.

I have a feeling I might have to threaten calling the "problem solvers" tomorrow.

This happened to a girl when I was in high school. Unfortunately, lots of the roads where I lived where very curvey. She ended up losing the wheel on her Jeep and in a ditch. They tried to claim that they usually do not tighten the lug nuts right after they change your tire :disgust:

I never heard what became of it. I would have raised hell.

I'm not surprised at all. Same thing happened to me. I check all my lug nuts after getting my car back from any repair place from now on.

meh

Happens all the time around here to people who get tires done at WalMart. I just had new tires put on 2 weeks ago; I automatically checked all the lug nuts before I got into the car. Then, I checked them again at home (using the wrench) to make sure they were tight enough.

Sorry. You said in your OP that the service rep told you on the 18th "to bring in my car tomorrow..." . You didn't add anything or change that so I went by the information you provided.

Sears forgot to put a lugnut back on one of my wheels. I didn't notice that for a few weeks.

I just never went back to Sears.

Be realistic here, you were never in any real danger.

You'd have to be a moron to not notice something like that before the wheel fell off.

Make sure they fix anything that was damaged (tire/wheel/lugs/whatever) beyond that don't make a scene.

Was the lady who spilled hot coffee in her crotch in danger either? Well she made at least 750,000 from McDonald's from that one :)

I think he has a better reason to be pissed and sue then that lady did... ;)

IIRC it was reduced considerably at a 2nd hearing, she wound up with something like $120k

Final Update:

As I posted below I was told to bring it in by 5 PM on Wed (it is about a 50 min drive from my house with traffic, so I had to take an hour off work early to make it on time). So I get about 2 miles away and decide to call them to make sure everything was OK. Well, when I called I talked to one of the other service reps, the guy who I was supposed to meet called in sick today... He told me I couldn't come in and that all the mechanics were gone. I started chewing him out on the phone about how this has been going on so long and that the guy told me to come in anytime before 5 PM and they would take care of me. I was like WTF.

I was about to lose it - esp. with all the traffic for the holiday - it was terrible.

So I told him that I will be there in about 5 mins to discuss this in person. Once I get there, I demand to see a manager and I take a strong tone with him fully expecting him to say sorry, come back another day and we will tighten your lug nuts. He then told me to wait a min and he went and talked to the boss. Well the boss said to go ahead and take care of me (they had a couple other guys that changed the tires), so I was like, finally, at least the trip wasn't a total waste.

I walk back in the garage with them and talk to the service manager and ask him if he will put on my snow tires from this thread and he said no problem, they will do it for free. I was like cool, things were starting to go good.

So they swap my tires and the boss comes out to talk to me, saying that he is sorry for all of the trouble, and he gives me the next 3 oil changes for free. Cool, about the level of service I was expecting and I got my tires changed for free. All in all, I left a a pretty good mood when I was done.

I do tell you one thing though, I would have lost it totally if they would have said that they couldn't do it right then I would have went nuts and probably had the police called on me.

so that was it? you didn't ask for a full inspection at an independent garage and some new rims? just 3 oil changes?
