Got laid off today

Joining the ATOT unemployed crew. At least I got a pretty nice severance package. It's kinda weird, my ex-company (Freescale Semiconductor), will have paid me more to not work (relocation, severance) than to work the 7.5 months I was there. Anyone have a job opening for an MSEE?

if you are interested in patent examination, check out the USPTO website. They are continually hiring. EE's get paid more than the rest of us, and their incentive bonuses are much more as well. Salary would be about 75k + 6.5k signing.

is that a "can" or "will" senario? I imagine if the economy keeps getting worse BJs will probably get cheaper as the service becomes more readily available. I wonder how much market saturation will effect the going rates.

In all seriousness, it's actually a great time to go back to school. Once the economy starts rolling again, you'll be in a better position for jobs. Since you already have a MSEE, why not go for Cisco/Nortel/etc Certs? Take linux and programming classes at a state university extension program <--- Highly recommend. I know people who found other peers who networked with them in these classes (networking w/ people = more job opportunities). Most of these programs are tailored for people who already have full time jobs.

I wish I can follow my own advice, but I'm holding onto my job until it's safe to pop back into the private world (work in gov't at the moment, and i love it here).

Good luck dude.

If you take 'off' or 'laid' out of the thread title it turns it into a good day instead of a lousy one.

To the OP, sorry you got laid off. Sounds like they at least gave you a decent severance package. If you can find a new job before the money runs out you could even end up with some extra money in your pocket.

A PE has no competition up to GS-13 (over 110k/year). From what I hear, USPTO has very very poor management and a high turnover rate. I also heard that the job is incredibly boring and repetitive.

why don't you go spend that time to invent something, pitch to a VC, raise money, and hire 10 people for a startup?

Yeah, I'm trying to help him. The division of the company (General Dynamics) I work for has its headquarters in Scottsdale, AZ. I'm sure they would take EE's, they have lots of positions open.

Yeah, I'm trying to help him.

I was more than sure of that, and was simply idly amusing myself in a totally irresponsible manner. 😉

How is the semiconductor industry doing right now? One of things that's really been interesting me in my EE studies has been semiconductors and VLSI.

Apparently, I picked one of the worst times to return to school as an adult. I'm just finishing up my BSEE (grad in fall), right when companies are pulling back... 🙁

Just did some research, I'd imagine I could. I'm pretty good at standardized tests like that. Cincinnati?

tontod, YGPM.

Minjin, well, Intel is doing well. A lot of the smaller players are struggling. Freescale had a couple factors working against it: it was a private equity buyout in the good days (2006), and so was saddled with a ton of debt. They are working to refinance it but the lenders aren't giving them what they want. Also, our biggest customers: the Detroit automakers, and Motorola. Obviously Detroit is in deep trouble. Motorola decided to quit using our cell phone chips after spinning us off in 2004. Bottom line is the company is pretty much screwed, so I can't say it was unexpected.

What fab? I'm at CHD-FAB and we lost a few over here. A couple were a surprise for sure!
