Got Halo 3 last night...

I don't think this game is living up to the hype. Maybe its because I'm spoiled with real FPS games on the PC, who knows. There's no noticeable gameplay difference between Halo 3 and Halo 2 other than a couple minor things with shields and controls. The graphics are much better, but that is to be expected. Overall, I'd say it'll sell very well due to the hype, marketing, and reputation of the first two games.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask 😛

Well, I think the biggest thing is the map editor, other than that it's generally just the same things that made Halo 2 awesome with a few additions like equipment and some new weapons.

I don't think anyone expected the gameplay to be noticeably different. Its the third game in the series. The gameplay mechanics are already established. It's the story and multi-player improvements that are the major additions.

Real PC games? Blah. That negates any supposed "objective" opinion you have of a console FPS.

And like Queasy stated, nobody expects anything different. Halo and Halo 2 were blockbuster sellers, you think they are going to change the formula?

 I bet the gamepad controls weren't good enough to your liking either?

Gamepads are fine and I understand that they don't want to ruin the "formula" that went into Halo's success. I'm not a biased PC fanboy. I'm just saying that if you don't play Halo 3, you're not missing out on much, unless you think good graphics = good gameplay, which is obviously wrong.

edit: and no, i didn't get it from a torrent.

Um, it sounds like from your description that it will kick ass...Its Halo 2 with better multiplayer, a map edititor and graphics that are, "much better".

Sounds pretty damn good to me. lol

I just played 6 straight levels w/my girlfriends brother in co-op.

It is the most fun I've had in an FPS story mode in a LLLOOONNNGGGG time. The battles and explosions and everything going on is just incredible.

I have to go to a damn party tonight and I really want to just stay home and finish it haha.

If people wanted great graphics, wouldn't they be playing the many generic PC FPS's out there? I think it's the fact that you indirectly classified Halo 3 as a "fake" FPS, as if somehow that makes any sense at all. I don't think anyone would consider Halo 3 a great game because of its graphics. More likely they'd cite the great blend of all the elements of an FPS to create a really *fun* overall game.

It's just that you're making all the wrong arguments.

If this makes it any better ...

I just finished it and holy crap, this is one of the most epic games I've ever played. It's just so freaking awesome and has so many parts in the game that make me feel all giddy like a little kid.

I swear I just beat it now, and the last level I almost wanted to stand up and clap. As lame as that sounds, it just gave me this giddy feeling inside. The music pumping and everything that just goes on in that game gives me this feeling that other games haven't done in ages.

I cannot wait to play through it again co-op with 4 people online. Simply an amazing game.

Damnit. I have never played Halo before in my life.

Am about half way through Resistance on the PS3 (just got it 3 weeks ago) and am starting to get an itch to buy a 360 just for this game. Glowing reviews like this aren't helping pur!

Must. resist.

I have resistance too but I haven't finished it yet. I am probably 1/2 done with it and honestly I don't think I'll go back to it any time soon with H3 co-op and multi just around the corner.

Resistance is a solid solid game, and definitely better than I expected, but H3 eats it up in pretty much every aspect IMO.

There are just these epic battles where you have to fly in and take out these things that remind me of AT-AT in Star Wars. And then the explosions they make when they blow up ... I won't even get into how god damn rewarding it is to watch things blow up in this game heh.

Yeah, I got Halo 3 midday on Saturday and it's rockin so far. Not a HUGE improvement in graphics, but it feels very very polished, unlike Halo 2. It won't knock your socks off like Gears of War but it has tons of detail in everything, and you'll really appreciate it if you compare it to Halo 2's detail (which was ok, but they really go all the way here). Plus the whole equipment setup is a really nice addition, just hard getting used to reloading with the bumpers instead of X....

I retract my statements - I gave it another shot and the campaign is amazing. I played through the first 2 levels on legendary with a friend on coop and YES its very fun! I still think the game could use some more depth in terms of tricks/maneuvers, but I'm sure there are PLENTY to be discovered with the new vehicles, shields, weapons, etc. I have yet to play multiplayer, but I hope the gameplay will be faster paced than Halo 2, but this is all subjective. Judging by movement speed in the campaign, I'm guessing its about the same speed. On the flip side, a faster gameplay might be difficult to handle on a gamepad unless you're used to very high sensitivity.

Oh and by the way - if you don't have an HDTV, right now would be a nice time to get one... Halo 3 looks like an original xbox game on a standard TV. Once you put it on HD, the graphics are spectacular 🙂

^^ all that being said, while I do think its a fun game, I still think it's not living up to the hype. I think $50-$60 will go a longer way if you get Valve's Orange Box for PC, PS3, or Xbox 360. Crysis is coming out soon too, so we'll see how that goes.

I never considered Halo 1 or 2 to be that epic, though they had some moments (especially with the music). Hopefully by epic you mean more so than those 2 games. If so, that's some good news.

I still have a feeling that I'll be playing nothing more than Halo 1 and 2 with slight upgrades. If it's closer to Halo 1, though, that will be better.

looks like at least one person agrees with me
that Halo is an over-hyped game series and I cannot understand why it has garnered so much attention when there are much better shooters. I guess it could be because it is one of the best console shooters, well at least the original was at the time, but there are much better offerings on the PC side. The story is not that great or unique at all, it just takes a few generalized concepts and combines them in one package. The multiplayer is great, sure.. but that's no excuse for a lackluster single-player campaign.
IGN UK reviewed it right, but apparently they don't know how to translate thoughts into actual scores. They gave it a 9.5, when they agree that multiplayer is the only thing really worthwhile in the end. How does that translate to a near perfect score? People hand out scores over 9 like they are candy these days.

I never understood the Halo craze either. It was the same at the release of Halo 2. It's exactly the same as Halo 1, save some new explosions for vehicles, akimbo weapons, and a few maps. No new gameplay elements, really. I always hated how the weapons take up half of the screen, too.

Nevertheless, I'll have a blast playing H3 at my buddy's house on Tuesday. GRAW2 is fun, but getting old.

I really don't understand the people who think it's "hype" when Halo 2 is STILL the number 1 played xbox live game. Do you realize how damn long the game has been out and what kind of games it is competing with?
doesn't sound like hype to me, there must be some reason people still have fun playing it.

If you don't like halo, just don't play it or read threads about it. seriously. I know from playing the beta that halo 3 will be just as much fun as halo 2 at the very least. so expect a very long run for Halo3 at the #1 spot.

that can say multiple things 😉
it's multiplayer is great, I'm just docking the actual reason for the Halo games: the story universe and it's single-player

but to say it's still the #1 Xbox Live game has two sides: it's a great game so everyone continues to play it. Enough great games to challenge the multiplayer have not been released.
I cannot stick to a single game's multiplayer for too long, and is why it may be awhile before I buy Warhawk for PS3.. sure it's a great game, but I cannot force myself to become addicted to make it the only thing I choose to play day-in and day-out. Some of my friends are WoW and CS:S addicts, and I sit there and stare at them with a 'what is wrong with you' type look. I like variety.
