Yeah, it doesn't make sense to judge a game based on playing the first level (did you even get to the end at the hydroelectric dam?), especially when you say uninspired environments. The campaign isn't the best, but overall I'd say its the best in the series. There's some cliched levels (really the game is a big cliche, but its done in a way that its more of an homage, which is what I think most people who don't like it seem to not get), but overall its enjoyable.

I really have no clue where you're getting that the graphics are terrible. They aren't the best, but they should hold up pretty well (for replay value later on) and hardly look bad. Each to his own, but I really don't see how you can say it isn't at least good technically.

Also, I really hope you were not playing on any difficulty lower than Legendary. Sadly, Legendary seems kinda too easy too, and that was on two-player co-op.

There's two things I think you're overlooking. This game supports up to 4 player co-op online, which to my knowledge no other FPS has really done, so thats a pretty big achievement there (co-op is what has made the Halo games so much fun for me personally). Also, go play around with the Theater mode. Both of those are a big reason why they chose to not overwhelm with the technical prowess (they spent way too much time focusing on that for the second one only to get stuck with limitations).

Aye... calling these graphics terrible is ridiculous, its just an obvious overstatement to make an effect. Plus I think the animations are spot on, so I don't really know what they are trying to say.

The amount of dudes they get on screen w/ this level of detail & no slowdown is impressive. That 1st scarab battle was fucking badness!

Maybe a slight overstatement, but the point remains. Halo 3 should have looked better, and it does not look good on a 42'' 1080p set, compared Bioshock, Gears, Call of Duty 4 MP beta. This is for many reasons, in my opinion. Art direction, animation, gun design, and geometry choices in some of the maps. It's also extremely pixelated, which takes away from any detail that the game could provide. You're right, they aren't terrible. But they're not good.

As for the campaign. I cleared through the first level, and was unimpressed. Just my impression. I was expecting something more. I'll save my judgement for the rest of the game after I complete it.

Again, the multi player is fun, and where the meat of the game is. I'll comment on it further after I get a few more hours in.

Also, I'm not a pc fanboy by any means.

No way is CoD4 MP beta better than Halo3. I have been playing the CoD beta since day 2, and I don't see how it's better. If you really say that Halo3 isn't a big improvement over Halo2, I can say the same from CoD2 to CoD4.
Your argument is broken. Fix it.

Why don't you just wait to finish the single player campaign before you review it? It just doesn't make sense. Would you watch the first 12 minutes of a movie and then go online and post a review about how it's boring and the same old plot? 12 minutes is 10% of a 2 hour movie. That's about how far you are through the game.

And my point remains. Try out 4 player co-op. Also, play around with the Theater mode. They are big reasons why the graphics aren't as impressive as they could be. Personally, they more than make up for a slightly lower visual level. And again, not good is just ridiculous, not just a "slight overstatement". You seem to be bashing the visual style/art direction more than the technical aspect.

You didn't specify what difficulty setting either. If you don't play on Legendary then you won't be challenged (which makes a game boring). I recall people saying the first Halo was boring and the AI nothing special, but then they were playing on the Normal setting. There is a pretty big difference. I'm not sure if you'll miss anything extra not playing on Legendary either. I know the first one you missed some nice extra stuff.

And yeah, it doesn't make any sense to judge a game based on the first level.

Lastly, no I don't think its a perfect game, it has plenty of flaws. Yeah, the graphics could be better, but would there be 4 player co-op? Would the Theater mode be any good? Who knows.

Yep. Exactly like Halo 2.

Convenient that both screenshots have an explosion taking up half of the screen, with shading darkening everything else. This one, for example, looks like the original Halo with only more detailed vehicles and characters. The branches and leaves on the trees are smudged into one ugly pea-green mess of a sprite and the shading is blurry and looks like something out of the original Unreal Tournament. Here is more of the same. The foliage detail in the game sucks and certainly isn't much better than any Halo game before it. Bland indoor level with only some fancy DX10(?) features to help with lighting. Nice sky textures and water, but the islands are piles of low-polygonal shit, only a marginal improvement over Halo 2.

I just don't see how the PC elitist crowd can knock Halo 3's multiplayer (or Halo 2's for that matter). I have yet to see any PC game offer anything close to the matchmaking system or the easy party set-up. It's a brilliant system, and I would gladly sacrifice the choice of a specific level to get in a game using this system, as opposed to the PC FPS online play where you have to scroll through lists of games, check their ping, make sure it's not a closed server, check the gametype, etc...

Another huge plus of Halo 3 (imo) is the weapon balance. You're never really able to use the excuse "I didn't know where 'X' weapon was and that's why I got pwned bla bla bla" because in every gametype you're provided with a functional and effective weapon that, when used correctly, can almost always stand up to your enemy's. Thus, the first minute of every game isn't spent as a rat race getting to the l33t weapon spawn point, as in the majority of PC FPS's I've played.

I'm not a console fanboy by any means, as I've thoroughly enjoyed the early Dooms and Quakes, Half-life 1 and 2 and their many respective mods, plus other FPS's throughout the years before the days of Goldeneye. I'm just annoyed that so much hating has been aimed at Halo and its ilk.

i just got a look at halo 3 and i have to say, the gameplay does look pretty fun..... i bet online will be an excellent laugh too. however im also a bit of a graphics whore....and im not too impressed with the way it looks. the textures are a little on the low res side, some of the prop models are pretty low rent (ie a tanker trailer that looks like a 50 pence piece from the back) but i think for me, the worst bit is the lighting, the lighting just looks like the lightng you might find in q3... that nasty harsh static lighting.

still, this means the game runs smooth as glass

Just leave them be, they are their own worst enemy. They are one of the reasons PC gaming is relegated to an "also ran" in total game sales every year.

I said the graphics were better in COD4 beta. I didn't say it was a better game. The Halo crowd gets really defensive when you critique what is presented, it seems.

That response doesn't even make sense. Hamburger was merely supporting the many claims about this games graphics with screen shots.

if you think the graphics suck, go here.

I got H3 on launch day and have played for a few hours so far. Honestly it just doesn't thrill me. I think the original Halo is still the best, but even that has always seemed overrated to me. The original was impressive in its day because it was so smooth and clean, but artistically I found the story silly and the whole thing kind of unsatisfyingly cartoonish. H2 was just boring, and so far H3 seems more like H2 than the original. Bioshock was 1000 times more impressive and inventive IMO.

Nice sky textures and water, but the islands are piles of low-polygonal shit, only a marginal improvement over Halo 2.

bitter much?

That response doesn't even make sense. Hamburger was merely supporting the many claims about this games graphics with screen shots.

if you think the graphics suck, go here.

All of the screen shots add anti-aliasing. Not to mention they're cropped smaller than their intended resolution, so they seem "smoother." But I have to admit, those do look pretty. They're just a misrepresentation of actual game play.

If 1/4 of the best PC FPS's are better than THE BEST console FPS then I think we're doing alright.

That list was in response to the troll who claimed there must not be any good shooters on the PC because he'd never heard of them. The numskull has obviously never even paid attention to what's available on PC, because apparently there are at least 25 titles which are better than Halo, and 75 or more which are at least in the same league.

List would have made more sense if it was multiplayer FPS since that is really all most of us care about.

I think there's only 3 in the top 10 that don't have multiplayer. Oh damn.
