So I went to the eye doctor last week for an eye exam and he discovered I was extremely nearsighted (I didn't notice really except hard to read the board)

So he prescribed me glasses I picked up on Wednesday..

holy shit :Q it is like a whole new world now, everything is so clear and bright and wow... I didn't realize what I had been missing

anyone else ever experience something like this when they got glasses for the first time?

I've talked about it a little here before. I was in 7th grade, sitting in the front row in math class trying to read the board. I turned to the guy next to me and commented about it. He handed me his glasses and WOW!

Just like you, I had no idea I needed glasses. My mother took my younger sister and I to the eye doctor. I needed glasses and come to find out my sisters eyesite was twice as bad as mine.

err, I hope you weren't driving before... and define extremely. I doubt you are extremely nearsighted or you would have noticed.

Hmm....I've been wearing glasses since I was 5 years old. However, when I first got contact lenses, I had this experience. Everything was so much clearer, and there were no blind spots, like the frames on your glasses cause.

Oh yeah, I've had that experience. I went the first 8 years of my life not realizing how blind I was. I thought everyone saw the world the same way I did... just a bit fuzzy.

They brought those little eye test machines into school one day when I was in 3rd grade and the lady said, yup you're gonna need some specs. I remember those dreaded words...

No one in the 3rd grade wants freaking GOGGLES! But I put them on and couldn't believe what I had been missing out on. Crystal clear world! I was about -2.5 in each eye then.

Now I'm about -4 in each eye. I've considered lasik, but I'm still not confident enough to go through w/ it... worried I'll go blind or something.

ah yes I did. I was a bit nearsighted. didnt even notice, but I always felt like I had a headache before, starting around my eyes. turns out, my eyes were stressing themselves to make it clear for me.

and as for you, it was a new world! lol everything was so clear, but I dont have contacts yet, they can be expensive :(

I hate driving with glasses instead of contacts (some of my eye doctors ask me to refrain from wearing the contacts for 24 hours before I go in to see them for my yearly exam). Blurry peripheral vision with the glasses, so my mirrors are useless without moving my head side-to-side.

I think I just compensated. Like I knew I couldn't read things very far head of me (like 10-12 feet) but figured that was normal, and I guess most signs I had read when I was close to them so knew what they were and never thought about it. It's gotten progresively worse since I started school which is why I went. I was driving, the doctor said that I was just above the legal limit to drive though.

Yeah the blind spots, or the fuz around the edges suck, and I'm still self concious of wearing them  my perscription said -125 on each one, so not sure what that means.

Are contacts more efficient than glasses? I've never had to consider one or the other.

hahahaha, -125, that is what you call "fake" near-sightedness. If you take care of your eyes properly, you can recover from that and go back to being normal.

Mine are -625 with 150 astigmatism.

If I hold up a finger in front of me and look at it without my glasses, it comes in focus about 8" in front of my eyes.

Really? Hmm. I know that anything more than 3-4 feet away is fuzzy (I use to think 10-12 feet, but taking my glasses off and looking around 3-4 feet seems to be about the ."difference" zone. I have amazing sigh up close

I think the main different is the level of detail I see now. Like just sitting here if I look up (Im at school) we have these hanging lights. Without glasses they are obviousl lights and I can describe the shape ect with an issue and even that its devided by a metal band.

With glasses I notice the pattern on the plastic and there the metal band is screwed into the plastic case. So pretty much like that.

I've also notice my university has many more hot chicks than I remember

I got glasses in 8th grade. It was great. Prior to that, I had always thought that photos were kind of fake, too surrealistic, the real world was softer and fuzzier than the world in photos.

You definitely got the wrong prescription then. The fuzzier the picture the hotter they are :p

It seems my spelling and sentence structure has been affected as well

Upon review, you might be right, I can now see everyone's acne ect ect...

Maybe the softness and fuzziness was a good thing :Q

I got glasses in fourth grade, the only clue being that I couldn't see the board. I had never realized what I was missing, because it never even occurred to me.

Any side affects that you'd want someone to know about?

I shouldn't even ask because I'm middle aged and would need glasses to read if I got Lasik. I think I'd rather be wearing glasses full time than carry reading glasses around with me.

Whatever you do, do not get the type of lasik where one eye is corrected for near sightedness and the other farsightedness. Everyone I know that has had that done has done nothing but btch about it. Only correct your long distance vision and wear reading glasses.

My eyes were super sensitive to light, and camera flashes were like needles in my eye for about four months later. I think that was because light was more focused towards the part of the eye that didnt normally get as much as the previous part did.

Also, for about 5 years I say kaliedoscopes around things like candlelight in dark rooms from the burn pattern of intralasik machine. Maybe the technique has improved since then, but this was the worst part since it would also appear on a dark night around a full moon. Then there was halos on street lights at night. Over time either I got used to it or something else, but I dont notice that anymore. But it did take about 5 years.

Funny thing about LED tail lights, I still faintly see the lasik pattern.
