EPA moves closer to approval of 15 pct ethanol gas



"Our nation needs E15 to reduce our dependence on foreign oil — it will keep gas prices down at the pump and help to end the extreme fluctuations in gas prices caused by our reliance on fuel from unstable parts of the world," said Tom Buis, CEO of Growth Energy, another ethanol industry trade group.

Nathanael Greene, director of renewable energy policy for the Natural Resources Defense Council, said encouraging more corn production to boost ethanol use is not an environmentally sound idea.


"We need to be using our land very judiciously if we're going to feed a growing population," Greene said. "Corn ethanol is not efficient enough to be directly in competition with food."

The Obama administration has set a goal to help gas station owners install 10,000 blender pumps over the next five years. The government also has provided grants, loans and loan guarantees to push the use of biofuels.

Sony will cut its global workforce by about 10,000, or 6 percent of its entire workforce, by as early as the end of 2012, the Nikkei newspaper reported on Monday. The outboard manufacturers sent three different outboards to be tested with 15% ethanol. All were destroyed, one (the two stroke IIRC) within two hundred hours. I expect similar results with high output motorcycle engines. I have mixed feelings about 10% ethanol - it's not good for my bike and hurts mileage in my automobiles, but it prevents the use of MTBE which I also dislike.

On the up side, I paid $3.669 Sunday and felt good about it. The nature of good news has declined significantly . . .

You won't get 15% worse mileage more like 3-5, its not like you get 0 mpg with ethanol you get about 25-30% less energy desnisty however if you have a vehicle designed for premium you are unlikely to lose any

High gas prices drive conservation and energy efficiency and they reduce our unnecessary driving, thus leading us to pollute less. High gas prices also drive research and innovation in alternative energy forms such as battery technology and hydrogen fuel cells. If we had predictable $1.50 gas we'd drive even bigger vehicles even more miles, meaning we'd have more CO2 in our atmosphere, more MTBE in our waters, more nitrogen and sulfurous compounds to breath.

I worry about the effect of high gas prices on our delicate economic recovery, but we also need high gasoline prices to help us ween ourselves off of fossil fuels. I also worry about long term economics, because together with economic freedom cheap energy is the leading driver of higher standards of living. But most people agree that together with cheap energy we also need cleaner energy, and as much as I philosophically dislike using pain to change our habits, I recognize that it's the most effective tool at the moment.

Someone used to have a very amusing fake radio advert about the Ford Excess, the largest, most luxurious SUV available. First SUV built on a Bluebird bus chassis! Sure it only gets half a mile to the gallon, but don't worry, if you run out of gas there's a free Ford Escape stored in the rear.

All I have to say is this year (2012), gasoline price is very unstable. The price can change (up or down) within a day (or hours). It used to be a few days or a week before the change would take effect.

I don't get it. Over Bush's presidency, gas prices rose like crazy, peaking at over $4/gallon in 2008. They fell temporarily and then rose again under Obama.

Obviously the president has little to no control over gas prices. I don't blame Bush for gas prices skyrocketing in 2008, and I don't blame Obama for the current rising prices.

I guess I just don't know how people can be that stupid.

Don't believe the hype about lower prices, says Jan Stuart, head of energy research at Credit Suisse, who sees "the balance of risks to the oil price as being firmly to the upside."

U.S. consumers have shown an ability to absorb gasoline prices near $4 per gallon, which Stuart attributes to an improving employment picture and rising personal income, which is up 3.6% on a year-over-year basis. "People are better able to afford to pay a little more for gas," he says.

Judging by recent history and the rhetoric on both sides, "it would come as surprise" if Iran were serious about "negotiating away its nuclear options" and the U.S. was serious about "embracing relations with Tehran," he says.

In addition, Stuart sees risks of supply disruptions in "numerous countries," including Iraq, Libya, Nigeria, Algeria, Venezuela and Russia

Then you aren't paying attention, don't you know it's either Bush's OR Obama's fault? You need to pick a team damn it!

They are raising prices because they say Americans are able to pay it and happy to pay the higher prices.

They are raising prices because people keep buying them, the entire globe. And for better or worse Americans have shown an easy willingness to pay these high gas prices. They are changing behaviors, but not all that much; small cars are selling historically very well, but there are no shortage of new pickups and Honda Pilots on the road, either.

The good news is for those willing or able to change cars there are options that just didn't exist in the past. $1 if not $2 per gallon can be mitigated by buying a hybrid or some of the new compacts.

I still expect to see record gas prices this year, but that feels like a very easy prediction.

I don't see anyone ever seeing any less for gas. Gas prices continue to raise, eating any possible profits that our new technology like hybrids could generate. 12 year payoffs? It's all gone. In 20 years everyone will be making due in micro cars, gas will be 12$ a gallon because "demand is low so we need to make up profits", and services will be through the roof because the contractors ect that need a truck to perform any work won't be able to afford to drive them.

So true.

Same happened with electricity. U.S. citizens switched to CFL by choice and by force as well as LED TVs using less juice and we get punished by higher electric rates to make up for the less profits.

Way to get punished for doing good.

The good news is that when $12 or $20 a gallon hopefully forces a lot of the smug people that bragged how gas prices didn't affect them into said micro cars.
