I can't believe how many assholes are in this thread.

Sleeping in can happen to anyone. But yeah, this crowd is made up of non-humans
rolleye.gif

Who cares man, if they are willing to can you that fast it must be a piss poor place to work anyhow. You'll find another job.

Yea, we're the assholes. Show up late to work for me 3 hours and your ass is gone. Not everyone works at Burger King like you do where they don't care
rolleye.gif

Uh that was uncalled for. WTF. I don't work at Burger King. How would you like it if I did something ignorant like joked about your dead grandpa that you parade around in your sig?
rolleye.gif

People have some serious anger issues to work out. It is funny to see how many people getting emotionally into this thread.

The guy goofed. Oh wait, yeah you don't get any sleep because you have a new baby or job or school or this or that so it applies to him too and he must be able to "cut it" like you? Get real.

People say "he didn't even call" how the flying fsck do you expect someone to call when they are asleep?

"I WOULDA SO FIRED YOUR ASS OMG PWNT!!!311111" yeah otay
rolleye.gif

I make a sarcastic remark about you working at BK and you want to bring up my grandfather? Yea ok, nice of you to bring up how many assholes there are in this thread. Asshole+1.

And apparently you don't understand why everyone is flaming him. Yes he goofed. He's denying responsibility. "I'm only partly at fault. I want to punch those SOBs" Yeaaaa........OK. Take responsibility for your actions. You sound like some douchebag that doesn't or won't take responsibility when you fvck up at work. You make the remark about how he didnt call b/c he couldn't b/c he was asleep? Hey jackass, he shouldn't have been asleep - he should have been at work. People make mistakes, yes. Pretending like it's not his fault and being an uppity bitch about it b/c you think they're the ones in the wrong? Yea OK.

Let's see you start a new job, your 2nd week sleep in 3 hours late, then go to your boss and make the excuse "I slept in 3 hours late. I'm only human" - let's see how long you last. Your expectations of the real world suck.

I just love how everybody keeps talking about "the real world"...

Yes... and I think many people are getting it confused with what happens on that MTv show. :p

I overslept 4 hours my second week out of college. And I had been house-sitting for my parents, so they couldn't get ahold of me at home. Freaked me out, but they thought it was funny...

I can probably understand oversleeping maybe 15-30 minutes, but I've never been unable to understand how someone could possibly oversleep hours. I wish I slept that well!

Wow, people strive to be 'on time' to work? I try to get here at least 30 minutes early every morning.

That way, even when I'm running late, I'm still usually early. Oh, and I haven't been late to work since my last job. You know what that job was? Managing two Blockbuster videos which also required working the midnight shift.

THREE hours?

how the heck do you manage to oversleep by 3 hours?!!
Unless, that is, you were up really late - in which case, I wouldn't have wanted you working for me with only a couple of hours of sleep.

Personally, I was 10 minutes late for work last year. Since then, I have 2 alarms set (in case I accidentally turn one off or set it wrong) as well as my tv programmed to turn on about half an hour before I have to get out of bed. Add to that being able to hear my kids alarms going off after I should be up, and there's almost no chance that I'd oversleep - unless the power goes out.

I have slept in late. In fact it was just last week or so. GF was over till 2.00 AM and my alarm didn't go off for some reason ended up being 3.5 hours late to work.

I tried to fill out my time-off slip (for those 4 hours) but my manager said don't worry about it ;).

Need alarm clock... must get alarm clock.

Seriously, though, when I was in a job that had set hours, I *had* to put the alarm clock across the room from me. Otherwise, I'd hit the snooze button while I was still sleeping - I'd never wake up. So, I forced myself to get out of bed to turn the alarm off. The difficult part was forcing myself to NOT turn around and fall back in bed.

Once-upon-a-time, I was an analyst for a 14-call center operation. Part of my responsibilities was ensuring that the call centers were adequately staffed for each hour based on call volume. If even one person called in sick (or worse yet, didn't show up for hours), customers waited on hold for far too long and/or the calls weren't answered quickly enough. In short, quality suffered. Therefore, the center was relying on you to show up. Even if you show up 15 minutes late, you and the other operators are busy playing "catch-up" for the next hour picking up the slack. Meanwhile, the customers get annoyed - if service is bad enough, they'll cancel service.

I realize you're human, but you have to try to look at it from the company's viewpoint - you're there to ensure that their service levels are met for a set period of time. Anything less, and you're not helping them out. In fact, they'd be better off by KNOWING that you won't ever be back so they can schedule someone else for those hours. Know what I mean?

I don't mean to come down hard on you, but hopefully you realize that it was *entirely* your fault, not partially - only you are responsible for you. I hope I've also helped explain why they let you go. In any event, I wish you luck with finding your next job opportunity.

Ouch. Now you know how a teacher with ten year feels like . *rollseyes* lol.

But my bro-in-law had sort of the same thing happen to him. He forgot to add on his application that he had a disorderly persons conduct charge on his record. He stole a candy bar and water from a convenience store years ago and got caught. They "had" to let him go after the background check came through 3 days into the job.

"Honey, I don't have to go to work tomorrow, or the day after that, and the day after that, and likely the day after that one too"

lol. Sad too because he was more than qualified for the job. Other than the other dick heads that been working there for years.

Just don't take it personally. And like others said, this is a valuable lesson that would lead to bigger and better things later on.

Been working at the same place for 17 years, and I don't think I've ever been more than 20 minutes late due to oversleeping. Three hours is just irresponsible.

I did fire a kid for coming in late for that reason. He did it three times - your outta here! If it had been during his 90 day probationary period he probably would have been gone after the first time. I should have known - punk actually answered his cell phone during the job interview.

yeah, i got the multiple alarm clocks thing going, too. My primary alarm clock goes off at 0530, secondary alarm (with battery backup) goes off at 0545 in case 1st one didn't go off, and emergency alarm goes off at 0615 if everything goes wrong.

The reason for all the alarms? In the Marine Corps, when you screw up and "oversleep," you're not "late" or even "fired." You're UA (unauthorized absence). That's an offense punishable by court martial. They can take your pay, your rank, or throw you in jail. While being late generally doesn't land you in the "brig" (military jails), they WILL fvck with you. Sometimes that means you don't get paid for a month. Sometimes that means your ass is showing up 3 hours early for the next month. (and remember, we don't get paid enough as it is) And that's if youre lucky...

thanks for reminding me why I like my job ;)

the day of my first interview, both of the department managers (re: the guys interviewing me) were 2 hours late because they both over-slept. as long as you're not consistantly 1+ hour late here, no one is going to say anything... on the other side, my best friend works as an accountant for Enterprize Rent-a-Car. he was 5-10 minutes late to work 3 times in two weeks due to traffic and got written up over it by his boss.

I'm pretty good when it comes to coming in on time, but only because I'd feel guilty if I were late. I need to be here to relieve the 5 pm - 1 am guys, so if I'm late, that means that they have to stay late... the only times when I've massively over-slept is when I'm working 16 hour days (work one 8-hour shift, have 8 hours off to go home, sleep, and shower, then back for anothe r8 hour shift).

My suggestion is to go to a truck stop and look for alarm timers.

I used to drive SEMI's and I hauled stuff that had to be delivered at real weird hours (like 2am).

So I had to sleep when I could. Usually, I'd sleep 4 hours, drive 4, and so on.

This little gadget uses 9volt batteries (no worry about power) and is a simple timer. If you want to sleep 5 hours, set it for 5 hours. NO BS here.

The great part is that the alarm has 2 modes - soft (which is louder than most alarm clocks) and loud (which is louder than a smoke detector - no kidding). I used loud. It also takes 2 button presses to disable the alarm - which makes it hard just to hit a button in your sleep. I still use it today. My wife HATES it, but when it goes off there is no denying that it is time to get up.

They cost like 10 bucks.

I overslept once for work. It was my first day of a new assignment at work (and it was also the first day of summer vacation). My new position meant I had to be at work at 5:30 a.m. I set my alarm, but when it went off at 4:45 a.m. I must have turned it off in my sleep. The next time I looked at the clock it was 6:40 a.m.

I called right away and told them the situation. Luckily since it's a student position, people oversleep all the time. I got a no-call, no-show, but that day I went out and bought a super-loud alarm clock and placed it across the room from my bed. I wasn't late for another day of work for the entire rest of the summer (4 months).
