Cliffs from the start...

1) Fios order placed 7/17/06
2) Underground cable laid 8/8/06
3) Verizon installation 8/9/06
4) Guy came at 10:30 (done by 1)
5) Speeds went from (with DSL) (via Speakeasy.net's speed test)
Download Speed: 1498 kbps (187.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 369 kbps (46.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
to (15/2 option for $40)
Download Speed: 14706 kbps (1838.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 1614 kbps (201.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

All I can say is 😀. Installation was smooth and the technician was polite and knowledgeable. Verizon gets an A for this installation. They also supplied me with a USB wireless card for my desktop (only reason they dont get an A+, would have liked a PCI card).

Pic1 - Everything installed inside of my garage mounted on this black board. Black thing in the upper right is the wireless router (probably the only minus, WEP only).

Pic2 - Just a view of outside. The white and black cables going in through the middle of the pic are new, as is the black cable coming from the ground.

Note: Guy told me about Fios TV, which isnt available yet to me, but explained how the wireless router they supply is able to broadcast TV wirelessly. So no wiring when that is available. Also, he said next year the speed levels go up. 5 to 15, 15 to 30, 30 to 75...

Cable Providers are so screwed. I have FiOS and am loving it. I moved into the house pre-wired, so I have no idea how long it took them, but it's simplly amazing. 🙂

I have the base plan (5/2) and it's $35. I think 15/2 is $45.

im not gonna go as far as saying cable providers are screwed, because cable companies are likely to move to fiber optic since our local cable company's backbone is fiber. and our area doesn't have verizon phone service, so no verizon dsl, so no FIOS option will ever be presented here (Toledo, Ohio). 🙁

My area has SBC (or AT&T now I guess). I wonder when we'll get it. I'll probably be off to college before we do though.

I <3 Fios too.

2mbps/UL lets transfering files between here at Uni and my home in NY much faster/convenient.

And, still no plans for Verizon to make FIOS available here, where Comcast has a true monopoly on high speed cable.

I think I speak for everyone in this thread when I say, I WANT FIOS NOW DAMMIT!

Cable has nothing to worry about... for now. Fios rollout is still pretty slow imo. They supposedly wired my town last year, but I still cannot order from them.

Umm, 15/2 for $45 or 8000/384 (I think that's what Comcast offers, who knows) for $45?

Time Warner is worse. $42.95 for 5000/384 🙁

Michigan is still not allowing phone companies to deploy on a county by county basis. I probably won't see AT&T's version (lightspeed?) within my lifetime. Enjoy the FIOS op.

Ditch the insecure router. I have clients with FIOS and they use normal, off the shelf SOHO routers just fine.

Well, I really have no choice out here in Suffolk (LI, NY). The only highspeed options we have here is crappy DSL and VERY EXPENSIVE Cablvision (Optimum Online). I have Optimum. It's $60 a month for 15/2 which I belive is the lowest package they sell. I do get 15/2 speeds. My download is normally about 12 with the router but my upload is a good 2.

I have no complaints about it just that it's too god damn expensive :|

Don't ever try using your upload for more than an hour or prepare to be capped.

not understanding what your trying to prove... non-fiber to the home, versus fiber to the home... um... of course there will be a difference. for one, i have Buckeye Cable, which is a local entity. I get 5000/512 for about that 45.... either way, sure its not 15/2.. but its also standard cable and not fiber.
what i am trying to say, is eventually the cable companies will provide fiber to the premesis because I believe they will incorporate the cable signal into the fiber. the backbones themselves are currently fiber, but that only feeds to areas where it breaks off into standard lines. with some patience you will see all fiber cable companies.
FIOS is only DSL's fiber.. its not a end-all be-all.... cable will provide fiber soon enough.

Why you have it too? 😉
I know. It's happend before just from playing CS:S for 4 hours straight (it was a boring day).

If I use BitTorrent and limit the Upload speed to ~10-15kB/s I don't get capped (or throttled, w/e you want to call it).

Question, Does FIOS cap like OOL?
