Got caught with a torrent by my University ISP

I am a student at the University of Minnesota and get my internet service from them. I have been using Azureus to download various torrent files over the past few months, along with Peerguardian. The other night I attempted to download a recently released game, but did not complete the download. It appears that the University received a cease and desist notice last night, so they cut off my internet access. I have to meet with my residence hall director (who is not technologically savvy) some time in the near future.

I know how I'm going to be lectured in this thread about how what I'm doing is illegal, wrong, unethical, kills kittens in soviet russia, etc. But does anyone have suggestions about what to tell my hall director that will get me out of this? Should I buy the game in question and claim I wanted a backup copy? Format my HD? Claim one of my roomates went on my computer? I'd like some ideas here.

Well it seems to me as if they already have enough evidence. Formatting your hard drive and trying to cover it up will be pointless. Blaiming a roomate isn't good, they might start asking the roomates and then you get caught up in a web of lies. I would just fess up, a cease and desist is basically a warning so as long as your University isn't too strict they should just tell you to never do it again.

Buy the game and tell him it didn't work, and that you thought it was pointless to buy another 50$ copy of something when the original didn't work and the store wouldnt take it back.

Buy a copy of the game, scratch up the CD and said you owned the game but you couldnt install it because it was scratched up so you decided to download it? Dunno, a bit of a stretch.

Let's all hope you can avoid responsibility for your actions instead of owning up to your mistakes.

One of my hallmates got a disciplinary hearing for supposedly downloading Lord of the Rings, but all he got was a slap on the wrist.

Yeah do that a day before you have the meeting. Keep the receipt and return it after the meeting. Take it with you to show that you were backing it up.

Not honest but if it saves your a$$, go for it.

*shocking* I think you learned your lesson. :p
I personally just pay for my own internet service. Saves the hassle. Or just don't do P2P stuff during University.

The U. of Minessota must not have taught you very much, other than the usual sheep-shagging and goat-roping. Just tell them the truth. You are a theiving little ass-clown and that you deserve everything that you get.

1. Change your major to Business or pre-law, since they match your ethics.
2. Buy kneepads and offer the hall director sexual favors since that matches your morals. If necessary, performs additional favors for other school officials
3. If you're too physically unappealing for step (2) to be practical, attempt to offer money instead. $100 in cash should be sufficient for the hall director, but other school personnel might require as much as $200 -$500.

lol

My brother was caught sharing a few years ago with Kazaa Lite, but they just gave him a warning to not share. They didn't say anything about downloading. :)

I know other people that have gotten caught and I know the first offense is always a slap on the wrist. But I'd prefer to have another "first offense" if I get caught again. It's not worth spending $50 on a "backup" copy to me, though.

They arrested a few kids at Georgia Tech for downloading torrents recently. Proof 3rd paragraph from the bottom. I would buy the game quick just in case the MAN gets involved.
