Have you ever been? I know that people from the north like to think that the south is nothing but unpaved roads and racism, but Mobile is nice and so is Huntsville. I'd rather live in Huntsville, but I wouldn't turn down a job just because it was in Mobile.
As for where to live, my cousin seems to like Theodore.

At heart people are really about the same everywhere. They're typically more educated in the cities and less educated in the country. When I lived in New York I found that on average, the people from New York City where much friendlier and helpful than the people from "Upstate".
It usually just boils down to where you're from. I'm from the Gulf Coast so to me it's obviously a nice place to live. Casual dress, seafood, sweet tea, cloying politeness, and unnecessarily long vowels appeal to me. The Gulf Coast area, where the OP is moving, is different from say Nashville or Atlanta.
I don't want to live somewhere that people look at you funny for talking to people in line at the store or for opening doors for other people.
Holy crap. I live in Baldwin County. Loxley to be exact. I work at the nursery at the intersection of I-10 and Hwy 59. I'm not a regular here but maybe we can all hang out on the river sometime! I have an uncle with property on both Styx River and Fish River. 25 y/o, married with an 11 month old son.
This area, contrary to popular belief, is a great place to live. The recession hasn't really impacted us any. There have been some job losses but not nearly what a lot of the country has experienced.

Wow, I had no idea that there were so many AT'ers in Mobile. I'm from there myself, although I currently reside in Tuscaloosa (for work). We really need a Gulf Coast AT meet sometime.

Mobile would be a nice place to live, I'm a lifer Texan but I have traveled the south quite a bit and many many times to the Gulf shores and NO area and I love it there. Nice people, good weather, many local attractions within a couple hours drive and within a days drive of pretty much any thing from central Texas to the southern east coast and Florida.

<-- Born and raised upstate/western NY, currently living in Huntsville. Personally, we've moved several times within NY, then from NY to Orlando, back to NY, and then to Huntsville. While our preference would be the mid-atlantic region (NC or VA), we took a bit of a gamble moving to AL thinking similar to what Chaotic42 said. But when I flew down for my interview and checked the town out, Huntsville reminded me a lot of Orlanda - a veritable melting pot of people. It's one of the highest tech areas in the entire US, and you get people from all over here, along with a few of the southern natives - and the latter group is just so much more friendly and hospitable than anyone up north.
We moved from FL back to NY after nearly 5 years thinking we'd be moving home and would like it better, be more familiar with the environment and all. We stayed less than a year. It's amazing how horribly sad the culture is up there. People would avoid eye contact at all costs, everyone looked beaten and weary, and it just plain sucked. You couldn't get the time of day from someone if you tried. Down here, well... let's just say that my wife and I are trying to determine whether we want to buy the house we're in or build something new.

It does get hot here though. We had a guy from somewhere up north come down to interview and he said, "Well, at least I got here in the hottest part of the summer."

There are huge differences between the SW Alabama and the rest of the state just like there is with SE Mississippi and the rest of its state. Really, if you were to go by the local cultures, the AL, MS, and FL panhandles would be combined to form their own state. The Gulf Coast isn't your typical Southern region, but it does have a nice Southern flavor to it.
