I am currently a sub contractor for NG and i get paid around 72K by 1099 and I save off about 18% in a SEP IRA. The company offered me about 62K with benefits. How do I decide which is better? Am I taking a pay cut?

*UPDATE* After my offer of 64800 they refuse to budge on their offer....what should i do next?

Don't forget about paid holidays, vacation, sick leave, and personal days.

Will you be able to be promoted within the company (can you move up)? How stable is your current job?

Weigh the pros and cons of the job and decide what's best for you.

I wouldn't.

When times get tough, contractors are the first to get cut. Taking a full-time position will give him some more job security.

Alot of people have told me NG sucks and don't know how to take care of their employee. Of course other NG employee tells me it rocks to work for NG so I really don't know! :p

1099: You have to pay self employment tax (which is basically both sides of the FICA/medicaid, etc...). On a W2 your employer pays half (8%).

On a 1099, though you can get some tax deuctions on a schedule C, but you'd have to figure what you could deduct. Also, if you are self employed (1099) you can deduct part of your health insurance (I think it's curerntly 35%?).

Pros and cons. My gut instinct tells me you'd be better off to be an employee becuase they'd give you paid holdiays, sick days and health insurance (which aint cheap these days). Plus going from a 1099 to w-2 (as I stated already) would be an 8% increase over the base pay. Not sure how often you bill /get paid on a 1099, but a w2 would be a regular quicker form of payment). I've done 1099 with some companies that take 4 to 6 weeks (some even take 90 days) to pay after you invoice them.

I would say negotiate a bit but take the full time position. Job security is worth it.

I've have four friends that work as engineers for NG and they love it. Seems like a good place to be onboard..........................but they did have that shooting a couple of months back at their yard in Miss. by a disgruntled employee.

thanks everyone....i want the full time position and I asked for at least 64K based on my lifestyle and commited mortgage payments and car payments....The main reason would be to get my secret clearance. which my 1099 will not. I get paid 2 days after I send my billable hours. This guy I work for is pretty good, but I dont want to deal with Schedule C's anymore. NG has a great benefits package and it would be around 80 pre tax a month for 250 deductible Health insurance.

Work in Aerospace long enough & you'll work with everbody twice.

There is NO stability in Aerospace, it's only good for as long as the contracts last.

Coming in from Contract to direct resets you to Zer0 time, but you can always bail back to Contract.

The benefits of direct outway contract work in the long run.

Push for 5% over the offer - you know their Bottom line, explore their range.
You can always take the carrot.

Any idea how long a secret clearance takes? I sent in the electronic and paper forms and fingerprint cards over a month ago.

The aerospace jobs in upstate NY seem stable. Although alot of people seem to go back and forth between Sensis and Lockheed.

Interim? A few weeks. Full? I've been waiting a year. I've even got an ITS now. God help you if you need a full TS for something these days.

 SH!T!

Well Lockheed had me fill it out and send it in to them. I did that month to month and half ago.

I'm supposed to be starting around the end of May or beginning of June, but need that first. I was supposed to sign a lease for an apartment near there this weekend. I don't what to do.

Then why on earth is Lockheed having me fill out the paperwork only a couple months before my start date?

It will take about 8-10 months depending on how old you are and how many places you have lived.
