May I be so bold as to request a sticky? I really think this can help a lot of people. :)

I despise spending big bucks on super-duper blazing fast uber cool hardware...and then it doesn't work right, or at all with other hardware and/or software...that just sucks.

The problem: You have an Epox NForce2 board. You install it, load up the OS and the NForce drivers. You load SP2 OR SP3. After 2K reboots, you're up and running. GOD, this thing is fast! Then you load Nero. You click Nero, and as it gives you the dialogue box "Scanning IDE/SCSI Bus...."the system hard locks. You try again. And again. You utter words of crass that even you didn't know you knew. You then utter the age-old hardware junkies' mantra:

W_T_F!!!!!!

What to do? I am not the expert, but hey, I fixed this problem...with some help. ;) Hooray for me. :D

I want to help those who will invariably have the little-known now, but soon-to-be almost world-known problem concerning Nero hard locking the system when being run on an NForce2 board.

First off, credit must be given to whom it's due; MechBgon suggested via email "I assume you've tried a Nero update?" Referring to my NForce2/Nero probs posted in this thread, here.

For the record, here is my complete configuration:

1. Epox 8RDA+
2. XP1600 (at 10.5x166=1740MHz...stock 1.75v voltage)
3. 512mb stick of Crucial PC2700 (*side note* but a 512mb stick of Corsair PC3200 CAS2 is going in there when I get my B TBred. ;))
4. W2K SP3 (+ all the Critical Updates off Microsoft's autoupdate site)
5. NVidia NForce V2.0 unified driver pack. (Just ran the executable and let it do it's thing.)
5. Antec Trupower 430 PS

In that thread, many very knowledgeable folks offered suggestions that supposedly HAVE worked for other folks...not knocking anyone (you guys are all super! :)), but I tried all the suggested fixes to no avail.

I tried rejumpering the HD, the optical drives. I tried this as master, that as slave, switched channels, tried the NForce 2.0 drivers, tried the ones off the board's CD, tried mixing and matching, uploaded that new ASPI layer thing, held a dead chicken in my left hand and waved a head from a GI Joe doll over the case...all that crap. ;) Nada. Not anything different.

What worked?

Applying a FREE update to Nero! Specifically, updating to Nero 5.5.10.0 For the record, I have Nero v.5.5.7.2 that came bundled w/my Lite-On CDRW. On Nero's page here,

Important Installation Information
This file can be used as a free Nero demo version, if you didn't have Nero installed previously, or as an update from an older version of Nero. In case of an update the software will detect whether you are entitled to a free update or not.

So, whether this will work with *cough*hacked*cough* copies of Nero...I dunno; that's your problem. :p

But, I downloaded the update, applied it. *angel harps play* And everything now works just dandy.

In all honesty, I said "Update Nero? Hah! Ya-sure, that's gonna work...all this crap I tried didn't help...like this will!" *grudgingly goes to Nero's site* Guess what? It did.)

Thanks, MechBgon, for the suggestion. :)

I really hope this helps someone. Good luck.

ps
Side note: the onboard NForce audio is just as versatile, configurable and SOUNDS AS GOOD IF NOT BETTER than my SBLive! X-Gamer. And NO crappy Creative drivers to deal with. The onboard sound rocks. I have no PCI cards in this box! :D

Good luck everyone.

actually i was gonna suggest that because nero wasn't launching for me (it had been... i'm not sure what screwed it up). the patch fixed it, but i saw that you had a different prob.

Why sticky when the very first thing anyone should do with a software compatibility issue on new hardware is update? That's the VERY first thing I would do, as I'm sure there should be nothing wrong with the hardware(or I'm just to lazy to do anything else :p). Either way this Bus problem has come up in WindowsXP/2K in the past, the only solution was to wait for nero to fix it or install special ASPI layers (that never worked for me). When XP came out Nero and Easy CD Creator 5 didn't even work in most cases, Nero 55100 has been out for some time now, always check for updates.

angel harps... LOL! :D You're welcome :)

As I mentioned, I had the analogous problem with my DirectCD3/EZ CD Creator 4... after installation, Win2000 would reach the desktop screen and WHAMO it would reboot, over and over. I had to boot in Safe Mode and apply a lil' patch, and angel harps played for me as well ;) So... been there, done that, took notes and adapted them. (edit: my issue wasn't on an 8RDA+, by the way)

I see TCWO has the 8RDA+ in stock again for $108 shipped here if anyone was teetering on the brink of buying one. ;)

This problem is also Win2K specific I believe. In XP, the only problem you will have with Nero is the burning process will quit with a "SCSI Command Aborted" message. This will only happen if you use the non-WHQL "SW IDE Performance Drivers".

The driver pack from Nvidia is apparently different for Win2K and does not include any IDE drivers, unlike the XP driver pack that includes two.

Anyways...glad to hear it's all working out for you Michael. :)

Hey guys,

BD231...I dunno what to say...as many times as I've upgraded, I've never run into anything as perplexing as this. I guess you're just more experienced than I am. But hey man, I'm drinking milk, and someday I'm gonna be big and strong and smart like you. Then watch out! ;) I was just stumped on this one and when a simple patch fixed the whole damn thing...well, I banged my head off the wall for a minute then I went and got another drink and all was well. :D I only suggested the sticky b/c I know many people (like I did last week) are taking the $100+ plunge and buying this mobo, AND, 99% of everyone out there uses Nero...just trying to help, not pat myself on the back. Technically, Mech fixed this, not I.

Insane3D and MechBgon, you guys are seriously major assets to this forum. I peruse a lot of threads and you help everyone. :) Speaking for the mildly technically-challenged; thank you. :)

It's working quite well. The software (all of it) is running great. Burning CD-to-CD seems slightly slower b/c I have the HD and the DVD on the same channel...but that may be just in my head. I haven't (nor will I) take a stopwatch to it. Just seems slightly slower. But heck, what's the diff b/t taking, say, 2:30 vs? 2:47 to copy a CD, you know?

I bought one of the "Holy Grail" XP2100s' (B TBred) from Newegg last week. Should be here Tuesday. I can't wait. We'll start at 2.2GHz and see where we can go from there. :) Thanks for your help.

Good to hear it's working well for you. If you still are having IDE cable length issus, SVC has a sale on rounded IDE cables now. You can get a nice 24", dual device, silver IDE cable for ~$4. I have my 8RDA+ in a Chieftec "Dragon" (Antec 1040 clone) and I use the silver 24" IDE cable for my CDRW and DVD. They are both on the secondary IDE and the CDRW is at the very top of the case, and the DVD is two slots down. The 24" cable works great and gives you room to spare. :)

Also, the offer still stands if you want some pointers on bios settings when you get your 2100+...just drop me a PM. :)

Thanks Insane3D. :)

Actually, I had some regular beige-colored rounded cables I had bought about a year ago, but wasn't using. They are about 2" longer than regular flat IDE cables. (why, I dunno, but they are.) That did the trick. I'm so glad I wasted money on the rounded cables a year ago when I was desperate to drop my case temp by 1C.

LOL!!! :)

Right now, the inside of my case is a mess. (AFA my standards go.) I like everything ziptied out of the way. Currently, the cabels "dangle" more than I'd like, but the mobo will have to come out when I do the CPU swap. (can't even SEE the clip on the AX-7 w/the mobo in the case :()

Oh, and I will be hitting you up for pointers...I took a look in the memory screen section of the BIOS and it's very different from what I'm used to.

Currently, with the default "Optimal" settings, my SANDRA memory scores with the Crucial PC2700 are 2475/2295, which is WAY faster than it was on the Epox 8K5A2+.

I am digging the NForce board, big time. :)

When I got my Sony DRU500A DVD+R drive, the burning software that came with it was a joke. Nero wouldnt allow me to burn DVDs, but sure enough the newest version they had at the time supported DVD burning. Picked that up, updated, and everything is peachy.

Nero certainly is the best burning software, and I think is usually worth updating even if you dont have hardware problems.

I think these nero problems should be added to the F.A.Q. if anything, certainly can be a tough fix when you don't know what's up.

:) Thanks, and I agree. I pulled my hair out..what little is left, anyway, trying to get it right. I never would have considered a Nero update... I thought "it HAS to be hardware-related..."

hmmm...i just got a "SCSI/IDE Command aborted" errror in the begining/middle of a burn about 20 min ago....i had burned a bunch of cd's before without a hitch (except went and added a liteon dvd drive today); tried the winxp burner and that didnt work either...i guess i'll have to "get" a newer version to see if it will correct (was using 5.5.9.9.)

You should be entitled to a free update via Nero's website. Are all your drives jumpered correctly?

Do you have the Nvidia "SW" performance IDE drivers intalled? If so, that is what is causing your problem and Nero will not work with them at this point. You need to install the WHQL IDE drivers instead in XP. From Nvidia's 2.0 XP driver pack download page..

IDE driver 2.70 In The Box WHQL <--- Nero works with this one, drives are not seen as SCSI by XP

IDE driver 3.07 Full Driver -- not WHQL <--- Nero will give you the "SCSI/IDE Sommand Aborted" message shortly after burning starts.

I have similar problems with both nero and ezcd not working on my NF7 under W2K. Is anyone aware of a fix? The W2K unified driver pack does NOT include an IDE driver, so I am stuck with the default MS generic IDE driver.

Have you already added the latest patches/updates for the burner software and confirmed that the burner is running in DMA mode and not PIO mode? If not, try those next. My EZ CD Creator 4 Standard works with my nF2 board, although I do have to install a patch to make Windows and EZCD play nice, no matter what system I'm using.

Yup. All software - W2K, Nero, EZCD, up to date as of this minute. All drives DMA enabled and running. My burner is a TDK 12x10x32. Both Nero and EZCD fail to read the CDR drive properties correctly - both read and write speed are incorrect.

I read the thread title and thought: "Hmm...that looks familiar..." and then I saw my name. How cool is this? :)

IPlaw; why do you have TWO burn proggys running? One should be fine. That might be your problem; two proggys fighting for the IRQ/drive.

They are not both running in the sense that neither have memory resident programs (I have no CD-RW software installed whatsoever). At first I had just nero installed, and it flaked. I then installed EZCD, and it flaked. I never had both running at the same time.

I wonder why there is no separate IDE driver for W2K as there is for WinXP?

Not saying anyone else is incorrect, but here's my configuration and what I did. You're probably expecting a bigass list, right? Nope.

8RDA+ (version 1...or whatever the very first one is...it's got the bios W/O the CPU health displayed on boot)
1 WD 8mb 80GB HD (Primary Master)
LiteOn LTD-163 DVD (Primary Slave)
LiteOn 40x12x48 CDRW (Secondary Master)
1 512mb stick Corsair XMS3200 CAS2 (in slot closest to CPU..I think that's #1, IIRC)
XP2100 B TBred @ 2.17GHz (12x180@1.700v)
Antec Trupower 430 PS

W2KSP3 w/all updates/fixes/patches
Nero 5.7XXX upgraded on the website to 5.10

Like you, I had DMA enabled, drives jumpered correctly, tried different cables, etc. What fixed it was updating Nero. That's it. Sorry if this doesn't work for you. I tried. :)
