... because his wife keeps playing WoW (!!!)

has to be somewhat subtle so she doesn't notice any changes/tampering...

first thing i thought was to install Norton Anti-Virus :)P) but what else could i do...

Distributed Computing project with high priority. Or video encoding... if there's some way to hide the window.

Or tell him to be a man and ask his wife if she can stop playing WoW?

Flood the network with broadcast frames, even better if it's gigabit ethernet. There are tools to do this. Or just create a loop - same effect.

Severely underclock the video card. Unless she's a true geek she'll never figure that one out.

1. Do something technical we don't care about

2. Install webcam on wife's computer

3. :camera:

4. ...

That's probably the best sure fire way, and one that's easily reversible when you need to use it (no need to enter the BIOS).

won't she realize something is wrong and then go into a rage until it's fixed?

you realize all these suggestions beyond tell her to stop playing will only result in one thing. her asking for a new puter since hers is so slow.

I was thinking about underclocking the video card, I just have to make sure that it can be done without any notifications, programs running etc... only thing is, if she feels that the video card/computer is too slow, wouldn't that force her to nag her husband to buy a new computer? -_-

If you do, she will just want you to buy a new one.

Norton's isn't bloated any more.

We are the smallest/fastest you'll find now :)

That's what they all say. If you don't want a slow system don't use a virus scanner. Get a proper firewall that does this for you and fly like an eagle. The person that comes up with a home solution like this that's affordable will be very wealthy.

If that PC is not running vista you can modify the tcp/ip settings for the ethernet card so the TTL is just UNDER the amount of hops to the WOW server. The PC will reach most websites and function normally but won't reach the WOW servers. May work, may not but playing with this setting is still fun IF you don't have Vista.
