This sounds woefully ill-informed.

Why? Never heard of an anti virus firewall? Nothing gets through to the trusted side.

Disable Firewall and Anti-Spyware software. System will work fine, for 10-20 minutes.

Might be best to slow PC down over time so it looks like something is going bad.

I suppose he could dip his testicles into the PSU fan which will serve the dual purpose of slowing the computer down and removing excess weight from his body that he's clearly not using.

Use msconfig and you can specify memory size without lifting the cover. Just be sure to log on after the reboot to acknowledge the message you receive that the configuration utility was run. Don't select something stupid low (like 64MB) as you will get a nice blue STOP screen when the registry cannot load all the way. 256MB will run slow in today's world...

Never used them for years and enjoy even faster system without unnecessary overhead.

Funny thing because every system I've seen with AntiVirus2008XP (which IS spyware!) had Windows Defender AND Norton Internet Security running. It's clearly a USER problem with going to these websites to watch a movie and getting a message you need a codec, etc. The procedure that everyone's been drilled for these years about installing plugins is paying off for the malware writers.

Oh man I love AntiVirus2008XP (and its variants.) Cleaning that crap off of people's machines have managed to buy me an XBOX 360. :)

I  spyware.

change the network speed of the nic to 10/half...... so the computer will still be fast.... but the network, not so much. and guranteed death in raid.

I like this one. She can't make a big huff over the computer itself being slow then.

Of course my first vote goes to telling her to lay off if it's really a problem.

No Firewall? I'm thinking you're overlookig something, like your Router or ISP providing Firewall. Trust me, 10-20 minutes without a Firewall is Death.

Start talking, moving, eating, playing your music, making love, etc. really fast. If you do this well enough, you just might throw off her sense of the "pace of time" so well that WoW will seem really slow in comparison. This plan works best if you can construct a shading/lighting mechanism on the windows of your house (or at least the computer room since I'm guessing your wife stays in there) that will simulate at 12-hour day. It may take a few "days" for her to get acclimated. Hopefully you work from home. If not, you'll have to start putting in 4 hour days so that you can make it home at noon, just in time for "dinner." Good luck.

Yes no (os) firewall on the system. That's the job of the network. You can put a patched system in the DMZ and be relatively safe but I would not do it every day! Most people at home use a cable modem gateway that uses NAT so their pc never has a public ip. Not long ago (back in the @home days) one could put a windows box on their cable modem and see their neighbors through netbios! Nothing was blocked. Later came the net send spammers using the windows messenger service. An unpatched NT 4.0 system will get nimda very quickly which is surprising as that means there are infected hosts out there but I have not tried that in a few years so hopefully they are all dead.

It would actually be more harmful to change it to 10/full. Then the switch side would operate in 10/half resulting in a duplex mismatch. A lot slower than just 10/half and you'll 10-30% packet loss.

Seems to be fast enough for the internet though.

What about modification of tcp.sys (SP2 makes it only allow 10 connections which we know kills bit torrent!) so what happens if we make it only 1?

Winner/ when she asks you to "fix" it for her pretend you've spent a great deal of time and headache to "find" the problem. Now charge a BJ for your service and let it go for 2 weeks or so and repeat process...WIN..
