Got a new digital camera, what memory card size?

I just bought a Canon SD600. What size SD card should I get? Is 1 gb enough or should I go for 2? The video quality seems pretty good for such a small camera so it might be fun taking videos. What do you guys think?

I use 256 and that is plenty for about 30 or so; 1 gb should be sufficient.

I have a simple 256 for my 6MP camera.. but I set it to take images at 3MP which is more than enough anyways. 256 then becomes ample.

I had to spring up for a 2GB 150X.

A two-week vacation or (long) wedding+reception for 5 to 6MP camera eats it up fast.

I got a memory card holder for $8. I have two 512mb, one 256mb, and one 128mb SD cards. And I can always get more / larger later. But I also had these laying around from my PDA, so it worked out well. May grab a few more 512's or a 1GB.

SD card prices are bottom-bin right now, you'd be cheating yourself getting anything less than a 2GB. You're looking at around $40 over at Newegg. Just don't get caught up in the whole **x speed thing. For the camera you have, you'll never need the speed of taking multiple pictures in a row (I'm talking 2 or 3 a second), plus, I highly doubt the camera even writes to the card at more than 40x or 50x.

1GB SD cards are cheap. i got mine for 30 bucks at frys...from sandisk.

This isn't compact, just regular SD. I'm not too worried about speed.

I have both a 2GB and a 1GB as a backup. Haven't had to dip into the other card except when I was in Hawaii earlier this year. We were doing the Hana Highway and ran out of space about halfway through the drive. If we didn't have that backup card, I'd have been mightily pissed.

Get as much as you can afford. If you're on vacation you might want to take a lot of pictures over a week long period without an internet cafe handy to download the pics to a memory stick or burn to a CD.

I just got the 2gb because if I end up taking videos, that eats up the memory pretty fast.
