Got a 7970 3GB Ghz Ed, should I buy another 7970/7950 or wait for 280x

I've been wanting to get back into PC gaming for a while now and with the $220 AR deal on the 7970, I finally have a decent card again.

The question now becomes if I should look for a good deal on a 7970/50 as they're phased out or go wait and get a 280x when a decent deal comes along.

The reason I ask is b/c I am thinking they'll be some more deals on last gen cards early next year and they'll be gone and hard to come by...

Also, someone pointed out on [H] that these 7970 Ghz cards are gold b/c of a mining and prices are $375+ on eBay. Should I try and sell it and hold out for a better single card?

I considered doing the same, but then it was mentioned that you can't run windowed fullscreen or windowed mode with Crossfire support, and I usually run games where possible in that mode, so it's something which might impact your decision.

I know I have seen Sapphire 7950 Dual X used selling in completed listing sold from $380 - $430 and considered man that is like around $800.00 +/-bucks if I sold mine. I was thinking hey I could get a AIB 290 take a performance hit but pocket around $300+ or pick up a GTX 780 TI pocket around $100.00.

I am still thinking on this and what to do/which way to go.:)

The only problem I am having is I JUST got the card and got back into gaming. If I have to wait for 290x then I'd have to stop for a while.

I know same here on waiting if I sold both cards I have to wait for the 290 AIB cards to come out but there is the GTX 780 TI but I am kind of leaning to the 290 AIB on price vs. the GTX 780 TI.

If you wait a bit, you should be able to sell it for $400 or so for your card. Now, at that point, you would just wait one to two months for a 290 with custom cooling which should run just north of the $400 range MSRP. The question then becomes do you want to wait a couple of months for a 20 to 25% boost in performance for maybe another $50 tops.

You're saying a 20 to 25% increase over a crossfire 7970? Because it would be more than that from a single 7970 -> 290x, right?

Edit: Nevermind, 2x 7970 would be 30-40% faster probably.

I'll probably just wait and pick up a 280x one day.

Fwiw & imo I been very happy with my 7950 CFX but have only been playing BF4 and Crysis 3 since going CFX recently (Oct) so my opinion so far is from playing these two games.

Wasn't factoring in Crossfire. I was calculating the cost between a 7970 and a Radeon 290 (non-X). MSRP for a reference 290 is $400 so you figure slightly more for one with a better cooler. So, assuming you sell your 7970 for about $400 and able to get a 290 for under $450, you're getting a good 20-25% boost for about an extra $50 out of pocket. I say go for it.

I listed one of my Sapphire 7950 DX's and it just sold for $399.00/$412.00 with shipping on e-bay not bad. :) So now I'm thinking should I wait a little bit/days to see if prices go higher (could go lower too) to list my other one or list now. I have to think about it but I think I going to list it and take the money while I can get it now.

This guy got lucky $$$ yesterday selling his Sapphire 7950. :)

$400 is nothing to pass up on for a used 7950. Looks like, due to virtual coins that Tahiti has just been a boom for the owners if they capitalized on it. Good on ya.

No gaming for the holidays b/c I just sold off my XBOX 360 too lol

I am actually thinking about pulling the trigger on a 780 since I might be using Linux as well. Nvidia has always been better for that...

I am worried about the price climbing on the non-ref 290s because it looks like the current ones are even going up and going OOS quickly.

What's to say they don't do the same when the non-ref are released in a month or two?

my guess is the AIB partners are stocking up chips for the custom version cards. if you want a card now the msi gtx 780 gaming is a good option. if you can wait 2 - 3 weeks asus r9 290 dcii should be available. that is going to be the pick of custom r9 290s.

Do you have some informative links comparing the 290 to 780?

Right now this is due to the miners (hot right now) they are buying up these cards (7xx/Rxx) to make money right now, hopefully by the time the AIB's are ready this will have passed and wont be a problem by then. Once the AIB's come I have to go over the reviews (perf & cooling) to see which AIB card I want to go with anyway, so more time there. I'm not worried at this point.

I've actually been looking and I think I'd be fine with a R9 280x. It's equivalent to what I had (maybe slightly better), which I was happy with. I'm not going to game higher than 1080p.

If I can get one when they start to come back in stock, I can come out ahead...

-$220 AR for my 7970
+$425 sold on eBay
-$300 for 280x whne they are back in stock

Sounds good.
Pretty cool we both sold are cards (3) under 24hrs from listing and you know what that means we probably could have sold them for more, but hey lets not get greedy. :)
