So are you saying you want Bush as president? :disgust:

I don't like either of them, either, but since we don't seem to have any other choice, I'm going Gore.

Just a quick post before class...

I did not get the impression that the republicans chase $$ from Oprah, ABC Nightly News, or uninformed friends, I got it from looking at who gives money to the republicans-gun lobby, oil industry, etc. Oprah didnt tell me that the oil industry is where the money is, I figured that one out all by myself.

Tominator: Thanks for backing up your statements. They hold up to scrutiny much better that way. Oh, you did not give an independent source. Sorry.

Russ: I have a lot of respect for you man. Wish you would cite sources as well.

The Dems get money from industry also, oil, hollywood, etc. They're just as greedy.

What difference does this conversation make? Women are going to decide. They are the ones with sufficient connections between brain hemispheres to make a balanced whole-brained choice.

No one on this board, of course.

BOBBERFETT-

The whole system needs a reset button...we screwed up and now everything is shot to hell

I don't buy anything a politician says. They care more about what they *think* we wanna hear (Or what some poll tells them) than what they really wanna say. In fact, people (in the media's spotlight anyway) rarely say anything with substance. They dance around questions and issues...never giving an honest answer.

We don't have a president...he's somebody's puppet. He's the visible person to whomever is pulling his strings. The people that have the power are the people we rarely, if ever, hear about.

I'd vote for whoever came out swinging. Not pulling any punches...not "overtalking" a topic to make him/herself seem like they know what they're talking about. Honest...telling it like it is.

My 2 cents

When the story is in the National Media, why give a source? By the time I hear it and get home, everyone paying attention has heard of it, discussed it, and waiting for the next Gorbasm!

BTW, it was Gerald Ford that first promoted the idea of an oil reserve.

I too wish there wasn't a two term limit so Clinton could serve again. Greatest President of my lifetime. Of course I have only been around for 25 years. I remember the chant 4 years ago..........."4 more then Gore". I sure hope it comes true.

Ughh....

I just do NOT understand. Sick Willy and Algore have been there 8 years... What have they done? Why are all these programs/problems left unsolved? If they had the last 8 years to improve education and get health care on track, why haven't they? Why should we as a country give them another 4 or possibly 8 years if there have been no results so far?

Ask yourself why we are in a oil crunch right now. Could it be the oppressive taxes? Could it be the lack of an energy plan? Freaking BIll Richardson ADMITS they had no plan for this debacle. He said they were completely blind-sided. Why? Cause the last administration (of which Gore was/is a member) was grossly ineffective.

Also ask yoursleves this. Gore has promised prescription drugs, day care, improved education, 1,000,000 new jobs (read: gov't jobs), reconstruct social security, and pay down the deficit, all in the first year. How will he do it? How will he pay for it? Has he proposed ANY methods of achieving these goals (read: bribery for votes)? No he has not. All he does is what the democrats have done for the last 8 years... promises, promises, promises... but no results.

Gore won't cut taxes. His tax cuts are aimed at people who don't make any money anyway (10% less taxes on $0 is still $0). Do you know that me and my wife are considered rich? We make $30k a piece pre-tax(accountants) after spending 5 years in college each (master's degrees), and under the Gore plan we are the EVIL wealthy (I LOVED that ant/grasshopper story BTW... too bad it happens everyday to hard-working peopl everyday).

No sir, I will not vote for him. He is rotten to the core. He is a compulsive liar. The hell with the Baldwins... let them leave the country... they can't act anyway. The only way to ensure that my vote hurts Al Bore as much as possible is to vote for Bush. The democrats had their chance. It is time for a change.

Hehe, there was a big banner posted in Turlington Plaza this morning (Univ. of Florida) that read:

GORE 2000

Paid for by the People's Republic of China

Good points and it makes me wonder how Gore can be at poll parity with Bush after the relative ineffectiveness of Clinton's eight years (that says something about Bush I suppose). Americans and politics have never been more separated -- most people either don't care about politics anymore or they care so little they don't bother studying the issues. The end result of this is always bigger, fatter, more controlling government. And to support that end taxes must go up. But increased taxation happens so subtly nobody seems to notice. Until, of course, people are hit with a "big nuke" like sharp increases in oil prices. Then they're eyes open wide and they see half of that gallon of gas is tax. Then they cry out. What does government do? Toss 'em a bone in the form of a trickle of oil from the emergency reserves, just in time for the election I might add.

TrainWreck:

Alan Keyes was NOT our ambassador to the U.N.

Colin Powell is a decent human being and shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as J.C. Watts who is (comment deleted for fear of offending everyone).

I was somewhat mistaken. Alan Keyes was among other things, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Social and Economic Council.

BTW it doesn't matter what you think of them, the point is they are black men in positions of leadership.

As for Tominator's assertion, see the Wall Street Journal, Thursday, September 28, 2000, Opinion page.

Gore was an integral part of the legislation enabling the use of the reserve. Also, the piece notes that both Gore and Jr Bush are equally "guilty" of stretching the truth. After all, both are politicians. The piece asserts that neither has made a claim that would rise to the level of an outright lie, though it did suggest that, on balance, Jr Bush has stretched the truth a bit further than Gore.

In fact, the author notes that neither has made a claim as outrageous as Raygun's claim to have been at the liberation of the Nazi death camps. (Raygun served the entire war in the US. It is theorized that he became so attached to the films he was editing that he actually came to believe he was in the thick of it all.)

The right leaning among us might want to poke holes in this. That gets a bit tougher when the source is the as right leaning as the Wall Street Journal.

Oh, one more thing. Retiree benefits are being cut by a lot of companies. Witness the highly publicized turmoil IBM retirees and employees went through with last year's changes to benefits programs. Medical benefits, in particular, are being capped so that most of us will face the likely prospect of having to pay a pretty large share of the costs once we retire.

My own employer (75,000 employees) is changing its retiree medical plan by capping its contribution at twice this years rate...forever. You might think that is generous, but with an inflation rate of 7% in medical costs, the limit will be hit in 10 years. From that point on, additional increases will come directly out of retirees' pockets. That will be a huge burden since pensions will stay level, but medical costs will rise at 7% a year. If you think this is unique, you are wrong. My employer is one of the last major companies to jump on this bandwagon.

Since business is abdicating its responsibilities to those who are least able to fight back, who else is left? That is typically where government is forced to come in.

If businesses want less government, why are they bailing out of the programs that they traditionally provided?

Red Dawn-

Define successful. Sure he has gotten more ass than me over the last 8 years, but how has that helped the American people? Well I guess you could make the arguement that he was so busy chasing tail that he didn't have time to REALLY screw up the country with his socialist ideas. He didn't give us this roaring economy. Innovation and creativity spawned the flourishment that we have enjoyed.

What do you want from your government Red Dawn? I don't want anything. Will Gore do that? Hell no. He is gonna ram health care, day care, prescription drugs, retirement savings plans, and the kitchen sink down my throat. He will twist and turn anything and everything because he thinks HE knows what is best for me. Maybe the Republicans are not as pure as they need to be, but at least they work under the assumption that people are generally smart enuf to make their own decisions.

Sorry to hear about your company. I do not think that caps on CONTRIBUTIONS would pose a HUGE problem. You would only face problems if the number of claims skyrockets and inflation is also soaring. Keep in mind that man ycompanies change health care plans like underwear (4 for my company in 6 years). In all likelyhood you will have a different plan within 5 years. I would be curious to hear more details about this, but regardless, you do NOT want social health care. I was in the UK (which has social health care) one summer. I broke my ankle. My host family took me to a hospital (read: shack in the hills). They tried to ascertain the nature of my injury. Their x-rays were so bad they could barely see the individual bones in my angle. The only way I got a cast was the fact that I could not walk. Blame it on bad machinery, or blame it on a crappy doctor. The fact is that one of the wealthier countries in the world has a social health care plan, and it sucks.

I can NAME Gore's lies (they are lies, no way around it). I am truly asking here, what has George W. lied about? I cannot think of anything off the top of my head.

Gore on the other hand (and these sound stupid.. cause they are) was sung to sleep by his mother singing a Union song written in the 1970's. Either he is lying, or his mother was singing him to sleep when he was in his late 20's.

He invented the internet (a classic).

His dog pays less for arthritis meds than his mother. Might be true, but how would he know? he made up the numbers he cited (don't remember where I saw that one).

Can you say buddhist fund raising (the lies, not the offense)? I sure can... He only survived that one cause the she-man wouldn't do her job.

Like I said, we all know Gore has lied. Perhaps Bush has too... if he has, cite some instances.

AND as an FYI: Bush isn't a "Jr." He is George W., his dad is George H. Al Gore on the other hand IS a Jr... Funny how nobody actually picks up on that

"The Democrats might suck but the RepubliKlans are fscked from the word go. They might be able to sell you a bill of goods but I'm not buying their lying crap for one second and niether should anybody else! "

I see not one iota of difference between what you are accusing the Republicans of doing and what you are doing.

Pull out your dictionary and check your spelling of wanker again. I'm sure you will be using it again soon.
