403: You know when the teacher isn't talking, the school system is embarrassed. Probably the best thing to come out of this is maybe they'll be able to round up the money to get the school system back on track. However, as the article mentions, Sarasota is quite well to do. If this is happening in our richest school systems, what's happening in the worst, say in Texas?

It looks like a problem that needs to handled on the local level.

"But there's also an irony here. Despite budget troubles,Sarasota High School is already one of the richest in Florida, boasting its own Web site and a television studio that the schools say rivals "any network facility"

It doesn't look like they need more money, just to spend what they have more wisely.

But even so...
"And it remains unclear whether the added education spending Gore has proposed would actually ever reach the school. Its budget of nearly $8.7 million includes less than $27,000 in federal aid, set aside for gifted and disabled students."

So we have a school district that can build "a television studio that the schools say rivals "any network facility", and the only solution to a lack of desks is to throw more money at it.

And the reason the school is short of money...
"In fact, the school district is still struggling with $17 million budget cut after local voters refused to approve a tax increase."
Could the voters be trying to protest the spending of their tax dollars on a TV studio vs. using the money for desk and facilities?

Edit forgot the link, so people can read the article for themselves
the one story that Gore didn't make up

Etech:

No, the school system is being run by Republicans. They simply have failed to set class size as a priority and have spent money on the frivolous items mentioned in the article. This is very common and is one reason we need better administrators nationwide. The teachers have been complaining about the fat cat administrators for 50 years. In every state and county they build huge buildings with plush carpeting and large offices for many of these administrators. Large chunks of the educational budget is wasted in every state on non-essential trash. And the States and counties are to blame. You can whine all you want about the big pig in Washington, but every State and County has its porcine administrators sucking at the public tit. I rarely hear anyone complaining about the State governments. Strange.

Anyway, the point he made was not a lie. And of course ND wouldn't have posted this bit of news himself.

So Gores solution is to create and add huge new layers of Federal bureaucracy in Washington. That will waste millions of tax dollars and not add one new teacher or one new desk for the students. How much will the bureaucrats running the program make and how cheap will their offices in Washington be.
If the problem is one of local incompetence then handle it locally. That is what school board elections are for.
Chess9, I would be interested to see where you found the "school system is being run by Republicans" do you have a link?

The story that Gore told was still questionable,
Let's see, Gore implied the school was so broke that the student he referred to had to stand in class every day.
The student he addressed had to stand for one day. At the minimum a great exaggeration on his part. At the worst he either did not check his facts or just did not care and went for the sound bite.
The school apparently had enough money for desks and teachers. It was misspent. A new Federal government program is not the solution for that problem.

Etech:

The school system IS broke. Why do you think they have 36 kids in a class?

I know Sarasota. I live in Florida. I believe with the exception of Dade County, and one or two others, all the state's school boards are run by Republican majorities. Often the candidates are "non-denominational". Anyway, Sarasota is very WASPY. I've been there for swim meets many times. I don't think its that big of a point because there are plenty of Democratically controlled school districts in the country with the same problem. You should have heard Al Shankar talk on this problem!

Anyway, Gore didn't exaggerate at all. Face the music, you right wingers are lying as usual. Any distortion of the truth will suit your fancy.

One student stood one day, another the next, etc. That's the point. Not enough money was being spent on facilities. Are we going to require that Gore know the Sarasota school budget before he makes a true statement about conditions there? Whether the money will help this particular school is really irrelevant because many schools will be helped. Of course, many school districts will just spend the money on bigger offices for the Asst. Superintendents. Waste at the State level is a much bigger problem than waste at the federal level.

Will Gore's proposal solve all the school's problems? Of course not. But we need fewer students per class, and if this program assists then I would support it.

As usual, you are avoiding the issue and trying to broaden the discussion to include the issues that you think are important, without conceding the inaccuracy of ND's post.

Chess9,
"and if this program assists then I would support it. "
From the site you originally quoted from. Lets find out if it will really help the schools before we support it.
"And it remains unclear whether the added education spending Gore has proposed would actually ever reach the school. Its budget of nearly $8.7 million includes less than $27,000 in federal aid, set aside for gifted and disabled students."

"No, the school system is being run by Republicans. They simply have failed to set class size as a priority and have spent money on the frivolous items mentioned in the article."
"I don't think its that big of a point because there are plenty of Democratically controlled school districts in the country with the same problem."
"As usual, you are avoiding the issue and trying to broaden the discussion to include the issues that you think are important,..."

Nothing to add to your discussion.

"Not enough money was being spent on facilities."
"But there's also an irony here. Despite budget troubles,Sarasota High School is already one of the richest in Florida, boasting its own Web site and a television studio that the schools say rivals "any network facility"

"Gore know the Sarasota school budget before he makes a true statement about conditions there?"
Make statements without knowing the facts, novel idea for some, apparently not for Gore.

Gore didn't exaggerate at all.
Gore- They can't squeeze another desk in for her, so she has to stand during class," Gore said during the debate.
One day. exaggeration

"Waste at the State level is a much bigger problem than waste at the federal level. "
Then lets address the problem instead of creating another larger wasteful bureaucracy. Lets fix the problem instead of throwing money.

I agree our children need a good education. Where we disagree is whether the FEDERAL government is the proper entity to make those decisions.

Chess9, A couple of more questions

When does an exaggeration turn into a lie?

How many exaggerations does it take to show a pattern has formed?

"Anyway, Sarasota is very WASPY. "
What the heck does that have to do with anything and why did you feel that is vital to the question??

"the school system is being run by Republicans"
"I believe...state's school boards are run by Republican majorities. "
Compare and contrast "it is" with "I believe" Do you have a pattern forming here?

This isn't the only statement that Gore exaggerated during the debate. Evidently he did not visit the fires in Texas either.

Come on guys, give Gore a break. He invented the Internet. Without him, we wouldn't be chatting in this forum.

we all know gore created the internet. There are a lot of porn sites on the internet. So gore exponentially increased the amount of porn. Isn't gore trying to fight porn on the internet? Just my 2*(10^-2) cents.

He did visit the fires. He visited with Witt's deputy, not Witt. That's the only difference.
