GoPhone users be forewarn...AT&T is blocking service if you use an iPhone

I got an iPhone 3G the other day on my contract AT&T line, and loaned my phone to my mom to play around for a few minutes on her AT&T GoPhone line, and all of the sudden she got these "no cellular data available" messages and couldn't get onto the internet with her GoPhone SIM. Looking around on the internet shows that AT&T has issued warnings and would be proactively blocking GoPhone users from using the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS.

But the worse thing is, they seem to have cut off ALL of her data services so she couldn't even use her old Motorola to check weather on WAP and text. The GoPhone CS is off on weekends so I guess I would have to call on Monday on their mercy to unblock the data services :(

Er... why didn't you just let her play around with it with your own unlimited data plan?

I'm sure AT&T will reactivate her data service if she calls. Kind of lame that it doesn't work even with her phone.

She wanted to make calls with her own account and I couldn't say no because she was my mother?

So when I come over to the States in July, and I plan to use a prepaid ATT sim in my unlocked 3G iPhone, they wont let me?

Apparently only for the "Pick Your Plan" option...you might be able to change the APN on yuor iPhone (from the default AT&T stuff to wap.cingular) prior to coming to the States and that probably won't trigger what happened to my mother.

Plus, you might be fine if you didn't download the new carrier updates.

Ended up calling after hours tech support to reset her line and things magically worked again.

Not sure if you have the iPhone OS 3.0 or not OP, but apparently this is a new "fix" that AT&T introduced with the iPhone OS 3.0. They changed their APNs in the firmware or something. I have a Blackberry Enterprise Unlimited data plan from work and used to pop my SIM card into my iPhone 3G from time to time with firmware 2.2.1 and it worked great.

I just upgraded to 3.0 last week and was getting the same errors your mom was getting "No Data plan etc.". Stumbled upon this guide and followed it and now everything works fine again:

Except my carrier disabled the ability to alter network settings in my firmware :( I might just have to sacrifice data.
