Google Wallet

I've used prepaid cell phones to pay for things overseas. I'm a huge fan - seems much more secure than a credit card. If it gets broad cross-platform support and is as easy to use as it was in Poland, then I'll sign up right away.

Right.

It is part of the reason I am tempted to wait for the nexus prime over the epic touch. However, I figure it will be a couple years anyways for this to take off.

I'm with you on this one. Given Google's record on customer service, I'd stay far away from this kind of service until they can prove that they're able to deal with customer's needs both adequately and in a timely manner.

As long as you're still required to carry your driver's license around with you, I don't see any wallet replacement taking off. Once we get around that annoyance, I will happily leave my wallet at home.

I haven't gotten the update on my Nexus S 4G yet but when I do I'll try it out with one of their prepaid cards. My brother does this stuff in Japan already and said it's real convenient.

Yeah, I'll give you that. Although, in Europe, I've seen that the carriers are the actual executors of the transaction, so complaints would go through them. And given the better consumer protection of credit cards, I'd have an inclination to use credit cards for larger transactions. But I travel a lot internationally, and I've personally had my credit card number stolen three times in the last year and despite the fact that I caught the transactions quickly (within 48 hours every time), I think carrying around a piece of plastic with everything that someone needs to steal money from you and that you have to hand to random strangers is one of the oddest ways to do a financial transaction that I can think of. If we aren't going to adopt an EU-style "chip-n-pin" system in the US, then I'd rather authorize transactions on my fairly secure, and always-with-me cell phone that's screen locked, will auto-erase itself with too many incorrect tries, and that I can remotely erase, that hand plastic around and hope that my waiter is honest.

It remains to be seen how exactly this system will work in the US, and what kind of consumer protection (if any) there will be, and what the charges (if any) will be. But I was pretty pleased with the system when I was in Poland - and once I'd used it once, I was vastly happier to pay by cell phone, than by credit card or cash.

Hmm, Home Depot, CVS, 7-11, and Jack in the Box all have it near me so I'll definitely get my use from it once I get the update.

google is trying to hijack the data flow like they did with google news. except that was cool and this is not.

i use the starbucks app sometimes to pay for coffee but mostly use my debit card to pay for things

google used to have to guess what people bought based on their search and web visits. now they know everything you buy, not a bad plan for an ad company. not saying i wouldnt use it, but it will have to go more mainstream before i jump on that particular wagon. id also have to upgrade my phone.

citibank has been testing rfid payments for years. it's faster if a business has the old registers with the separate CC machine. most businesses have the integrated ones making paying with a credit card no slower than a phone

if google offers a no fee prepaid credit card or a no fee gift credit card i can see a use for this. especially poor people with no credit or debit cards. the current 20% fee prepaid credit cards are a rip off

Right.

If I take your credit card I can swipe it in tons of stores before you lock it or I get asked for an ID (when was the last time a store asked you for ID..?). If I take your phone I can type in the wrong PIN 5 times and it's locked.

A piece of plastic seems much less secure to me than this, especially since the US doesn't even use the chip+PIN like they do in europe.

I'd say your phone is much more likely to get stolen than your credit card. I frequently have my phone out, my wallet and/or credit card, not so much.

i've called amex and other CC companies about fraud charges and they were taken off. the merchant is on the hook in the end, not the bank

who is responsible for fraud with google wallet?

Exactly.

And just wait until the system gets hacked. That should be a lot of fun.

I have zero incentive to use this. Google will have to pay me to use this. Same for any other company.

i guess just because it's google its reason enough to use it. no matter how convoluted it is or how many benefits you lose

everyone in NYC worth going to takes credit cards, except Joe Art of Coffee

why would i take my phone, punch in pin and then wait instead of just giving my CC for the 1 time in 6 months i go to a drive through. even if you always go through a drive through it seems a CC is faster since the big companies will have the integrated registers with a fast link to the processor

if i drank soda all the time i would just buy it at costco or the supermarket. starbucks has had their pay from the phone app for a long time and i rarely see anyone use it. most people with starbucks cards use the plastic cards. and the process is almost always faster than the techcrunch demo video

i rarely use store loyalty cards as well since NY state law is you have to offer the coupon to everyone

I can see why Google and Apple are pushing this. Theyll eventually want a cut of the every transaction like Visa and MC. And sell targeted ads. But why isn't PayPal not rushing to get in on this action? The biggest winner from this could be PayPal yet I haven't heard anything from them. If people could use PayPal to pay, they could get so much more of the retail sales business.
