everyone in NYC worth going to takes credit cards, except Joe Art of Coffee

why would i take my phone, punch in pin and then wait instead of just giving my CC for the 1 time in 6 months i go to a drive through. even if you always go through a drive through it seems a CC is faster since the big companies will have the integrated registers with a fast link to the processor

if i drank soda all the time i would just buy it at costco or the supermarket. starbucks has had their pay from the phone app for a long time and i rarely see anyone use it. most people with starbucks cards use the plastic cards. and the process is almost always faster than the techcrunch demo video

i rarely use store loyalty cards as well since NY state law is you have to offer the coupon to everyone

Did someone tell you this will only be in drive troughs and soda machines? I'm confused as to what your point is.

Which method is 0.3 s faster isn't what I care about. But having all my different credit cards, plus Target card on the phone is more convenient. And for example if I loose the phone I can block the old one, sign into a new phone and have my credit cards show up again, without the hassle of reissuing all my cards.

All the loyalty cards I always forget to bring to the right store, plus the metro card I use so rarely I never remember it would be awesome to have in one place (that can be transferred and updated on any new device!)

The "who pays for fraud" is a legitimate concern (I don't know. I'd assume the credit card companies still?), but I think this has the potential to be much more convenient that the pile of cards I carry around now. If you have 1 CC and a stack of bills and are fine with that; maybe this isn't for you. That's cool, but I like it's potential.

Until your phone gets stolen and now you have no other means to pay for anything..oops and no phone to call to report it stolen. Sounds crappy. Plus if this becomes more mainstream phones will become a larger target by default anyways.

No thanks

I completely agree with everything you wrote. As you say, I want to see more details before I'm super enthusiastic, but I like the potential.

I can see why Google and Apple are pushing this. Theyll eventually want a cut of the every transaction like Visa and MC. And sell targeted ads. But why isn't PayPal not rushing to get in on this action? The biggest winner from this could be PayPal yet I haven't heard anything from them. If people could use PayPal to pay, they could get so much more of the retail sales business.

IIRC paypal is pushing something like this as well.

The password on my phone is just as strong, if not stronger than my PIN on my debit card and with a CC you don't even need to type in a PIN.

The grocery store next to our house is called "King Soopers" which is part of the Kroger's grocery chain. They don't take a phone number - you have to have your card. And you do not want to shop at King Soopers without a loyalty card. They'll have stuff like "Salmon $9/lb ($23lb without card)" Also, another one is IKEA - must have the card.

Last I heard about this (not sure if here) a few months ago, paypal was suing over rights for this feature, because a couple of their ex-employees went over and got hired at google. This was over 2 or 3 months ago.

I love this tech. I used it all the time in Korea. Phones, keychains attached to phones, credit cards, little plastic toys that held credit chips. I could buy anything i wanted and just swipe it near a sensor. Had awesome fraud protection too. Instantly got a receipt on my phone and email for every transaction that ever happened.

$23 for salmon? Check out whole foods down the road from vitamin cottage. I think it college blvd but haven't been to fort Collins in a few years.

I never knew IKEA even had s loyalty card. Nyc the cashiers have a generic loyalty card by the register for people without one

Got my update and signed up for the pre-paid card and got $10 free for signing up. I'm already home tonight but I'll test it out tomorrow to see how it goes at the local Jack in the Box.

I think this is a solution in search of a problem. I always have my wallet and at least one card on me. Everyone has a cc machine and a bar code reader. Very few have nfc machines. The transaction seems to go through Google putting more latency into the process as shown in the video. I rarely use loyalty cards since ill get the discount anyway.

I think square and their payment add on has more chance to succeed since it solves a real world problem of accepting cards on the go

Finally got around to using it and it was quick and easy. Even faster than using a credit card. Tried it out at a 7-11 and was easy.

Cell phones are far more secure than credit cards...I'll take this technology in a heartbeat.

LOL - Just ask RSA about how "secure" modern security really is.

No one get get my credit card info without physical access to my credit card. The same cannot be said about virtual wallet services.

Everytime you give your card to a waiter, it can be stolen. Which is why I never use debit card. I don't care if my credit card gets stolen. It's not my money they're stealing.

Or scanned at a atm or any other spot you swipe your card. Neither is fully secure but at least nfc uses some additional security each time you go to pay.

Electronic security is my bread and butter at work. I can honestly say I'd rather walk around with my credit card information on my phone rather than on a physical card itself. Especially those RFID tap/swipe cards. Fuck that.

Though to be fair, any information digitally stored/accessed is always vulnerable, so you have to pick the side with the less likely hood.

jack in the box is the only place here in california that has those nfc readers and theyve had them for years, long before anyone had even heard of nfc

I've tried it at JitB but none of them work at all. I've talked to a couple managers and and tried it myself. None of them work at any of them. Home Depot, 7-11, Stater Bros, and CVS Pharmacy all have them around me here in the LA area.
