So google voice is now supporting MMS via sending the message to gmail.

Received an MMS through google voice today. The text states: MMS Received.
Instantly get a gmail from that phone number with the picture attached.

This a new feature from Google? Before I would never know if someone sent me an MMS.

I'm on straight talk and have my number ported via google, so I use google voice for all incoming and outgoing calls and texts.

yup. First time this happened to me i thought the same thing. I thought they had finally added the one thing google voive desperatley needs to get me to use it as my main number.

At this point, I wish google would either just make some improvements to google voice, or just kill it altogether so i can stop getting my hopes up. Could have been such an awesome service, but things that seem easily fixable just go ignored, and i cant remember the last time they have done anything to improve the experience. I love google, but i also really hate them for this.

Do not suggest such a thing, some people like me like google voice.

How you uninstall the app before you suggest google killing it.

Exactly. I love Google Voice. It's why I use Android phone. Sure the app could use an update but the basic functionality other than MMS is there.

Then why don't you stop using it yourself and rather than suggest Google kill it for everyone else?
I love Google Voice for what it is. I don't give a crap about MMS support.

You're obviously not satisfied, so stop using it and port your number back to the carriers.

First off, is anyone here dumb enough to think that google really is listening to what is said here?

For the record, I have used google voice in the past (maybe a year or so) and got tired of waiting for updates. In that time i kept both numbers around until google voice has matured to be good enough to use as a main number. Well that day never came because google doesn't give a shit about products that really dont bring in any revenue.

I still use GV for voicemail, and have both my numbers, but it just sucks google is content with leaving the service the way it is. If you don't think so then i dont know what to tell you. Sorry for "ruining it for everyone else" by stating my opinion on google voice.

What a dumb mentality to have - If you dont like it just shutup and uninstall. No, I actually love the idea of google voice, but the TRUTH is that they have done just about nothing to improve it since they came out with it a few years ago. Google intentionally gimped google reader and then killed it off - to the dismay of its small but loyal userbase (sound familiar?). Whats to say google won't kill off google voice? They clearly havent made it a priority at all. MMS support, and an upgraded UI should have came years ago. Instead who knows if theyll ever get them.

Can you cite evidence that someone here mentioned, thought, or assumed that Google is really listening to what is said here?

That's where you're in the minority. Those of us that use Google Voice today use it for it's current function, not because we're expecting some super duper magic update at some point in the future.

How much revenue does Google Translate bring? Google Earth? Google Talk? Google Calendar? Google CloudPrint? Google Lattitude? Google Reader? Where in their earnings report did you read that Google Voice doesn't bring in any revenue? Yeah, I guess when I'm calling my family members abroad using Google Voice, Google doesn't make any money off me for refilling my Google Voice account balance.

An even dumber mentality to have is "Because you don't like it the missing MMS feature, shut it down for everyone else who does"

Not really because I don't understand what Google Reader has to do with Google Voice.
Do you want me to give examples of things that have been cancelled by Apple and Microsoft to the dismay of their small but loyal userbase as well? I can name plenty.
Not exactly sure what your point is in comparing Google Voice to Google Reader.

I use Google Voice for all of the following:
1.) Visual Voicemail
2.) ALL text messages and voicemails automatically backed up to GMail (unlike other people, I never have to backup texts from my phone because it's automatically saved in my email)
3.) Calling foreign countries (it's way cheaper than using Skype or buying phone cards)
4.) Free SMS texting (that does not require me to start begging or convincing people to ditch SMS which they will never do)
5.) Call forwarding to multiple phones

The Google graveyard is very large and I do not want it to get larger see link below
http://www.slate.com/articles/techn..._joins_graveyard_of_dead_google_products.html

That is awesome....

My .02 on this is that I'm planning to switch my main # to GV here in a few weeks. I use a pay-as-you-go phone with GNex and Platinumtel. I'm hoping this will get me mostly free texting via wi-fi and I'm also hoping I can just disable voicemail through the carrier and have it all go through Google Voicemail. The only annoying thing I'm anticipating is having to enable and disable text forwarding but it seems it can be done through the browser on the phone and can't be done through the GV app for Android.

I don't really care about MMS, in fact it doesn't always work even on a traditional carrier. My brother sent me an MMS the other day and it never went through. He sent it yesterday and it then went through. My hunch is that people send uncompressed jpegs from their smartphones with 8mp cameras and if they don't have a good data connection then it won't go through. (I believe it has to go through 3g/4g only, can't go through wi-fi) although phones might compress it but I don't know if that is always the case.

Regarding the porting to GV, I hate how it can only be done though one of the big 4 U.S. carriers, I'm going to try porting over to T-Mobile prepaid and then on to GV from there. Then I'll activate a Platinumtel sim with a generic number and setup forwarding.

Google has a habit of coming out with a great product then letting it languish. With the exception of a few products they just make something then move on as if the 1.0 is perfect.

Eh, I think most companies are always listening. Doing is a totally different story =)

Technically, this isn't even Google's. They bought Grand Central and have barely done anything with it (relative to how long they've had it). I think they got stalled with carrier talks. What they did with Sprint was amazing. I loved it when I was with Sprint: got proper MMS (I can't let it go, I don't want to miss stuff from family and friends), got calling from the web with my cell W/O having to port, got awesomely hilarious transcriptions, etc. But then, it started being unreliable and Sprint and Google were pointing at each other. So much fun there. And I'm sure it's not a simple integration either, so no one else wants to deal with the hassle.

In my entire life I think I've sent maybe 50 SMS and 0 MMS.

I'm all about email with a dedicated email app. People can check it any way they want.

I agree with multiple people above...I could care less about sending a photo by MMS. We have email, Facebook, etc, etc.

However, iPhone Group messages are sent via MMS. So, if any iPhone user sends a SMS message to more than one person...you will not get this message on Google Voice unless you have Sprint.

I know all caps are rude.....BUT THAT IS MILLIONS IF NOT BILLIONS OF MESSAGES that just go to Google Voice aether without any notification.

I do everything through Google Voice...I have thousands of messages. I use it as my main number. I send almost all of my text messages through my computer. But, I'm tired of not getting messages from the people who matter most.
