Google Instant Messaging is here, in beta version.

It requires you to have a Gmail account to connect.

If you need an invite to Gmail, reply with your email address and I'll send you an invite.

Looks good, too bad all of my friends are still going to be using AIM, which forces me to do the same... *sniff*

Rumor has it that Google is in discussion with AOL, MS, and Yahoo to make their protocols compatible with Gtalk.

Dude that would be sweet.

im very dissapointed in this app.
how could it be dubbed "aim killer" if it doesnt have all the features of aim to begin with?

-no customized screen names [u must only use ur email]
-only gmail users
-no invisability
-no tabs
-no file sharing
-no direct connect for picture swapping
-no rich text
-more privacy options!
-no customizable profiles

Well, considering it's Beta, I'm sure some or all of those features will follow, especially if Gtalk can be used with all the other IM protocols.

Yeah, trillian pro didn't have a lot when it was first released.

yea you got to give it time for it to mature. and notice how it is beta heh. THey are obviously giving this a shot and see how it is going to turn out. Who knows maybe they will release a newer version that is rich will all the features that you are currently whining about not having with google talk. ^_^

EDIT: ALso to add i think since they use G for everything, it would be sweet if they just called it Gtalk like Gmail.

where is my rain coat.... i need something to cover me from all your crying.

I'm sorry, I love the potential that I see here. I've found my own set of gripes with it...but I'll be sure to voice my opinion to Google, besides that's our job as beta testers isn't it?

the fact is, if you have gmail you might as well use this...Unistall GMail Notifier and install GTalk...it does the same thing 😉 and then some.

Here are a few things I think about GTalk:

Pros:
+ simple interface
+ notifies you when you recieve email @ your gmail acount
+ whenever you type a msg, hit enter and then quickly type another msg or two before the other person responds it doesn't keep repeating your G@d D@*Ned screenname over and over...

example:

mangotbg: aldjflksjfd.........
....................
.........
bob245: adsflkjsf............
...............
mangotbg: adflaksjfdla.....
...........
..........

rather than

mangotbg: asdfklajsfdhkjasdhfkjahf
mangotbg: askhfkajsfdhkjasdhfkasfadkhf
mangotbg: asdflkjsdf
bob245: afslashdflkjasf
mangotbg: aldjfalsdfjalksgjfd
mangotbg: alsdkjfalsdjfalsdfj

Cons:
- CTRL+I should make italicized font....likewise for CTRL+B for Bold..etc, etc
- few of my schoolmates/friends use gmail...i have a lot of coercing (sp?) to do

the built in notifier doesnt reset after it's clicked on when a new email arrives.

trillian just plain sucks. many times i used it, buddies would complain "i cant see ur msg" or i cant even seen theres, no profiles either, plus its a resource hog.

google take it back. come back when u got something ready to compete in today's IM market.

Also works with GAIM - you may have to connect a few times:

Protocol: Jabber
Screen Name: xxx [the part prior to the @gmail.com where name is xxx@gmail.com]
Server: gmail.com
Resource: gaim
Password: xxx [your gmail password]
Alias: whatever

+Show more options:
x - Use TLS if avail.
Port:5222
Connect Server: talk.google.com

for a beta, they have done a dam fine job making it very clean, intuitive etc,
like when you click on the title bar, while not minimizing the chat window, it'll show the last message recieved, plus the "call" thing is just awesome 🙂

Why are we judging it based on google's client? Any im program that has jabber support will work here, it's a standard protocol. That is really the future of instant messaging, as far as I'm concerned. You have one program that you like best, that you can use to talk to people on the different networks in exactly the same way. I'm not sure there's really a need for another chat network, but I'm using it since adding another one to the list makes no difference, and I like google anyways.
