this worked:

1. Search google maps
2. Open the card for google earth
3. Scroll down to "developer" and click on it
4. Scroll to the very bottom and google maps will be there
5. Install

its pretty good. the only noticeable bug i see is that i somehow cant set my default work location, but home is just fine. scrolling can also be a tad smoother but otherwise i like it. this is very much an improvement even over the built in google maps in ios5 (which my 4S is still on!).

Voice guided turn by turn on my iphone 4. Sad day when Google gives me that feature and not the guys that made my phone.

Hallelujah! Just in time for when I need it for transit help in Chicago. Time to shove Apple maps into a dark buried folder!.

The app is pretty slick. I only played around with it for about 15 minutes so I still have more testing to do.

Its a huge improvement over the native iOS (iphone 4s) app. I did not update my phone to iOS 6 so I cannot compare it to apple's map app

Anyone else find it laggy when zooming and panning? I'm on an iPhone 5 so I wouldn't think the hardware speed is the problem....

The overall framerate is low, but... considering map tiles are now completely vectorized and are a lot more detailed than even the Android version, I'd think that's worth it.

Other than that, I don't see any lag?

Not at all. Maybe it's your network speed? Are you on wifi or cellular?

Are you directly comparing with Apple Maps? I'm not seeing something as bad as 5fps stutter/lag but on my 4S if I just pan around and see how quickly things refresh on both platforms, the Google Map framerate is definitely lower. Even the side panel thing you can probably start counting home many frames show up.

It doesn't hurt its usability, but it is slower. I wonder how bad is it on a 4?

It's actually the same on my iPhone 4 as on my iPhone 5.

Framerate seems lower than the stock Maps app, but it's not like it's chugging along.

And it looks nicer than the stock Maps app, so...

Okay so it's not just me. I'm sure it will be improved later on. For now, I'm more than grateful to have transit back

Yeah I'm still willing to play with it later. It has earned a valuable spot on my front page. It's time for it to battle with the Apple Maps icon above it. One could get deleted, the other moved into my last page "junk" folder. :D

Strange how some defend Apple to the end and state things like Google and Android are evil, but at the same time wish for Google's products to come to the rescue....Go figure.

I wouldn't expect Google to poor thousands of man hours into Apps for iOS when Apple chooses to just shitz on them in the end.

I've never used apple maps before. I have an iPhone 4S running 5.1.1
I am strictly comparing the native google maps app on the 4s vs the one they just released yesterday.

Trying to download right now from the app store -- no go. Must be getting hammered! The whole app store app isn't loading anything.
