Google whining to the antitrust about this is a freaking joke.

Its also got a yahoo, ebay, amazon.com, answers.com, and creative commons search bar built right in. And guess what. I can add more search engines to that too like IMDB.com, Wikipedia, Expedia, Weather Channel, ESPN, Newegg, Zipzoomfly.... and its all built right in. Its not just Google. Theirs just happens to be the default. I can even add MSN's search engine into firefox if I wanted to. Can IE7 do all that??

sure they have some cool sh1t, but they evilness overshadows their cool products.

I don't like them and I try to stay away from all the crappy products they've been pushing out. the only thing I use is google search, they haven't messed that one up yet.

not to mention any software you install now has that embedded google toolbar or desktop trying to slip in. It's almost a standard checklist to do when installing software...

checklist:

1. run install command
2. look for evil google products trying to slip in through the install (uncheck tiny box)
3. finish install/reboot if needed.

:p

I've noticed that too. Soemtimes they hide Google Toolbar unless you select Custom Install. I like Google the search engine, but they are just as underhanded as any other company.

I'm just waiting for the day that someone exposes that they install spyware/rootkit via their products....I know they do. That google desktop is a nightmare for IT because you never know if someone installed it and turned your entire network searchable to the whole internet.

If I think you're thinking what I think I'm thinking, you've got it all confused.

IE7 will have a "search" box in the corner that uses the MSN search engine.
Firefox has a "search" box in the corner that uses the Google search engine.

Google is whining that MS shouldn't be allowed to do this.

How is this any different than Google paying Mozilla to bundle this into their browser?

I've NEVER bought into the monopoly issue surrounding IE and Windows. You can easily download another browser or simply go to "www.google.com".

They are turning a blind eye to their own practices.

Not to mention that you can change it on both. I use google on both, IE7 lets you change it to whatever you want - and then make google default. Now if you couldn't change it, then I would understand

I can't believe I'm saying this..but I just tried the new microsoft search beta and it kicks google's azz0r

1. you don't see ads in the search results, it all looks like real results.

2. the continuous scrolling of the results is genius! google don't got that! :p

you can see for yourself here

I can go either way on this one.

Firefox, Opera et al are NOT google-made browsers, so for people to say including google searches on them is hypocritical is different than Microsoft including a search engine that they made, but still a thin argument.

If usuability testing has shown that it's hard to change the search engine for an average user, I would believe it. Keep in mind that once Vista ships, it will have IE 7 by default, and there will be no giant dialog box that asks if you want to keep google as your default search engine. So if you don't have that option when you first use IE7, and it's difficult to change, then yeah, I can see from their point of view how that sucks.

On the opposite side of the table, it just seems that Microsoft has become a scapegoat for getting hassled by other companies about how to run their business and design their software. Microsoft runs the world of computers and although they have a responsibility to end users everywhere to keep the power in the user's hands, making them jump through hoops is only going to slow technology down. Forcing competition to take a step up can only make for better products.

It's not like it would be that hard for google to make a link on their homepage that runs a script to change the default search. The geniouses at google could code that and have it live in an hour.

Ahh that IS what I was thinking yall were thinking.

How in the world is THAT hypocrisy?
Firefox is pretty much ONLY used by people who already have atleast moderately good internet-browsing skills. They already know about what search engines are better, they already know what the other ones are, they already know how good/bad the other ones are, and yet, they don't complain that google is default, as it is best. Firefox is not going to have computer-"newbs" using their service. IE will. These people with IE will be shoved with MSN and will probably not know how to change it. They will get into a comfort-zone with MSN search, even though they won't know what they are missing with other search engines, and then will never try anything else.

In previous versions of IE, there was no default box. This made users go out and test the search engines for themselves. They figured out which one they preffered (loading times, easy of use, accuracy, convience, etc, etc) and you can tell that from the TREMENDOUS growth of google, that most people chose Google.
Google is the best, but Microsoft will be making people without time/want to inform themselves think MSN is better. They will be giving their customers inadequate service.
Sure, they might not physically complain (which MS will consider a victory ;roll;) but they might be dissapointed on the inside =P.
Google knows that they won't lose many (if any) customers by adding an option box in FireFox, because those people are more e-intelligent.. and they are just trying to spread their 'goodness', but MS is being greedy and wants more money/legal monopoly. Plus, MSN search is going on to an MS-made browser, but Google didn't make firefox.

:/ think about it
