Google Fiber, new potential cities

So this basically eliminates all competitors in the areas they move to right?

I mean I guess some poeple are stuck on contracts or are just oblivious... but if google fiber is available YOU ARE getting it right?

I guess FIOS (I pay $120 for 85/35 + tv) may be fast enough for me not to notice the 1000/1000 google jump but free 5/1 would be ideal for so so so many people.

Free 5/1 is awesome.

I wonder how I'd incorporate their TV package into the system I really want: a PC-based media center.
They don't support or utilize CableCARD, but... if their system is wholly unlike cable, in that they aren't using encrypted content (or the worst scenario, which locks you into using Windows Media Center: DRM content), some after-the-fact solution might exist, but probably still requires their TV box first.

Just when I move out of San Jose..

San Jose is huge though. I can't imagine they'd get the whole city done quickly.

Can someone tell me why the Bay Area of all places is the last one to get shit like this? Google's backyard for chrissakes.

No shit. It's frustrating. My parents place near SF still doesn't have FIOS or Uverse. I blame all the NIMBY folk.

I hope that is the case for Apex .. I know when I put in my new home build address, it came up as not available. But then, my street is not yet in the major map databases yet either.

I'd guess there isn't much headed to NE just due to it being a pain in the ass to build there. Construction season is like 6 months, and frankly the population isn't THAT high. So it will take twice as long and cost more than twice as much.

Weird... I heard there's a city in the NE called New York. I hear a few people live there.. Not many though 😛

More than likely you are right about the seasonal and infrastructure thing though.

People are clueless about the Atlanta metro area.

These are the cities Google considers to be "Atlanta" in the OP's link:
Avondale Estates
Brookhaven
College Park
Decatur
East Point
Hapeville
Sandy Springs
Smyrna

Newnan is 11 minutes from the the Perimeter. IOW, College Park and Atlanta-proper is only minutes away. I can move a few miles, genius. I spent three years in San Deigo so it's not like I'm married to this place. 🙄 Anyone in Newnan facing a lease renewal now has this to consider so, yes, it is going to affect us Newnan. Almost everyone I work with in Newnan commutes from one of those places or even farther away.

And don't bother with the "That's not Atlanta!" BS. We all know that the "perimeter" includes College Park, Decatur, etc inside and they are all collectively "Atlanta" unless you want to call Atlanta Airport the "College Park Airport." 🙄

Evidently you don't know shit about how the telecom/providers select who gets it and who doesnt in an area. Not saying Newnan wont get it eventually but I wouldnt be holding out for it. Sure if you're a renter and work in atlanta you got the option of moving. Even if you dont work in atlanta, its an option. Ive been in the area east of atlanta for over 15 years so you dont have to school me on the geography of atlanta.

Somehow you think I had some kind of expectation that they might or might eventually cover Newnan as part of "Atlanta" and that this expectation means I "don't know shit." I never once expressed any such thing. In fact, my brother works for NuLink, the local Newnan cable company, so I would not like it at all if they set up shop here. I firmly expected all of the roll-out to be within the limits of the cities they listed when I made my post and was under no delusions. You took one look at my location and assumed I was only excited about the potential impact it would have there.

NE, or New England, is composed of six states of which New York isn't one of them.

It still baffles me that they pretty much ignore the Bay Area and only now do they include San Jose. ffs, go across the Bay, please!

🙁

Think he meant NorthEast

z1ggy meant Northeast, but that was a response to JBT saying "NE," in reference to New England. BarkingGhostar was correcting z1ggy's mistake.

Yes, I looked at the location and I assumed you had a house, and that would keep you locked down to newnan.

Hopefully for Google these potential locales have sizable blocs of Timer Warner/Comcast customers itching to switch.
Merger's pretty recent news though so maybe it didn't factor in to Google's selection.

TWC just announced massive speed upgrades for the Austin market.

http://www.marketwatch.com/story/ti...oss-its-entire-austin-service-area-2014-02-20

Still nowhere being able to compete with Google Fiber, the fastest plan they will offer is 300/20mbps at the same price point as Google. Both AT&T and another local cable provider already have faster plans for the same prices in this market.

Sadly, I think it might be just enough for them retain some customers who really don't know any better. I imagine if they start to see more customers leave than they expected they will up the speeds or drop the prices some more.

Either way, I'm very happy that Google seems to have lit some fires under these ISP's asses. It's a travesty it took something like Google Fiber to make these faster speeds a reality though. It is obvious that TWC has had the capacity to increase the speeds already and they haven't purely out of greed.

This was such a great move by Google, why just data mine at the browser, OS or phone when you can data mine everything! Google has learned a lot from years of working with the NSA.
