Google Earth for Free!

Really nice software, especially for free 😀 . It is sort of old, it doesn't show my house remodeling, and the playscape is still there (which was removed about 3 years ago).

So it really is 3D accelerated?
Doesn't list NT. Guess I can't play around on my PC at work. 🙁

With many areas of Google Map's satellite photos, close ups are either missing or very, very low res (are they planning to improve?). Is Google Earth the same way?
The Urban Area photos on M$ Terraserver are much better, but are only available for select cities.

Welcome, frustrated would-be planet surfer.

We appreciate your interest in accessing 3D geospatial information, but due to the technical limitations of this beta launch, Google Earth has been forced to take a brief breather. Please check back with us soon.

Thanks,

I figure its like a limited version of Keyhole with only US cities just like in maps.google. i like the addition of satellite view on maps.google and when i view that at 1600x1200 resolution its so much better than back when MapQuest had satellite view for a while.

lets check it out shall we...

It is exactly a free version of keyhole, since Google bought them out.

Basically, there's the free version, which is what you're using. There's also a $20 version called Plus, which gives you some additional capabilities (GPS stuff and so on). IIRC, there's also a business version called Pro (we're talking several hundred dollars here), which lets you do stuff like save what you've been looking at (including in a video sort of mode if you're rotating around) and post it to your website.

Indeed ,this is better than keyhole... it doesnt have KEYHOLE? slapped all over the map.

The already do have satellites that can read license plates and tell u if your tags are expired... you either need some type of clearance or pay their monthly fee to use them. For the mainstream (Pay accounts)I believe they are down to less than 6 inch resolution... not bad for a camera several miles away.

thanks OP

Welcome, late comer would-be planet surfer.

We appreciate your interest in accessing 3D geospatial information, but due to the excessive bandwidth usage created by word of mouth, largly through your employeer's email system and as well as large web forums such as Anandtech, Google Earth has been forced to take a brief breather. Please check back with us soon.

Thanks,

This is the message I got.

Before Google Earth used to be fee-based, but now they're releasing a free version for us all, as well as "plus" versions which cost $$.
I highly recommend this over NASA's software because Google Earth incorporates the same (if not better) 3d views, but also includes google's map directions, local search, and more.
It's pretty neat IMO.
