Updated Google Earth a day ago on my Nexus 7. Just now tried it for the first time. Now it no longer can use GPS location, so you can't track/pinpoint your location when offline. A serious flaw in a Wi-Fi-only device.
THe only Location option in the settings is "Google's location service". i.e. you have to inform Google of your whereabouts - which I refuse.

I tried Maps for the first time - it still uses GPS - why would they hamstring Earth?

not sure what google is doing. some people need to get fired.

The recent Google Maps update removed the Latitude widget. I'm not even sure what they were thinking as a LOT of people use it.

OK I have to update this thread I started.

Now that I have installed the Android 4.1.2 update, Google Earth is now using GPS like it should.

I'm guessing the problem was Google pushed me the app update before the OS update, so the app's GPS functionality was broken until I updated Android.

maybe it has something to do with the new location APIs they just announced.

what app is that?

It's the updated version of LBE security guard for JB devices. It's in beta and really needs translating properly.

I won't put up a link as it's still a bit rough but if you search for "LBE security matters" on XDA you should find it, or you can get the original Chinese version in the play store if you can understand it.
