There were some really stupid motion controls in Zelda too. Like stuff that you literally couldn't do in handheld mode because you couldn't see the screen if you turned the joycons that way since the screen would be upside down.

I play my Switch entirely in handheld mode and didn't come across anything impossible in Zelda.

Then you missed 2 temples. I mean they were doable, but again, you couldn't even see the screen when you were doing certain parts so you had to basically guess. It was clearly designed for playing with a controller or joycons detached.

If you're talking about temples with controls like the old labyrinth games then I had no problem with them.

Speaking of motion controls, are they good enough on the Switch Pro Controller to where one could just completely forget about the joycons for docked play? Especially in Super Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild. Also how is the battery life on the Pro Controller?

I love my pro controller. I rarely play handheld unless I'm playing piczle lines dx. Battery life is great. I think they get like 40 hours battery life, but I always plug mine in when done playing though.

Other than Zelda, and a tiny bit in mario, i dont have much experience with motion controls. Those shrines in Zelda where you have to use motion controls suck.

Yeah in Mario I just did basic motion control with the pro controller. Maybe the joycons were marginally better for some actions but I didn’t feel handicapped with the pro controller. I just don’t think the joycons are that comfortable.

I played BotW in docked mode the entire time, with a Pro controller. Those aforementioned temples could be a bit weird with it, but other than than, worked fine. Something like 130 hours played. Battery life is great... made me bitter all over again about the pathetic battery life on PS4 controllers.
Not sure how well the motion controls would go in Mario, it seemed optimized for the Joycons so that's what I used.

I played Mario Odyssey with both the Pro and in handheld mode a lot. I have like 950 moons so I played the shit out of it. I can't really recall what motion controls were even needed for in the game though lol.

Controlling the hat to do other things than go in a straight line, mostly. Could also be used for climbing faster and stuff, but yeah, not essential for those parts.

So, I finally started playing Zelda on the Switch, and this opinion won't surprise anyone, but it's certainly an interesting game. Given that the last Zelda game that I really played was A Link to the Past, this quite the departure, but it still captures the essence of exploration... just on a far larger scale. I do think it's a bit odd to see some of the more survival game mechanics such as various foods (with different effects), cooking, stamina, etc. To a degree, I think there's something to be found in simplicity especially since it helps to lower the bar of entry. A Link to the Past came out when I was seven, and I can only imagine how much more of a challenge it would've been to try to grasp all of the systems at a younger age. Although, I guess that's sort of why Nintendo released A Link Between Worlds for the 3DS as that is meant to be the "simpler game" that's more accessible... especially given the 3DS tends to target kids a little more.

There is one thing that kind of bugs me about the game... the performance. Maybe I'm a bit spoiled given that I play a lot of games on PC with a good graphics card, but it was pretty easy to notice when the framerate started dropping. I'm really tempted to try out the emulated version of the game to see if I can utilize those good gaming PCs to get a better overall gameplay experience.

Well Zelda was a launch title and a port of a Wii-U game. So I wasn't really surprised by any performance issues I saw just due to the nature of that.

The Wii U was the first Nintendo console that I had purchased since the Nintendo 64, and I never got around to playing the Zelda games on the Wii U. (Even though I own them.) I never played any on the Nintendo 64, because my brother and I traded it in for a PlayStation to play Final Fantasy VII, which came out about a year before Ocarina of Time.

Oh, and there was also a lot of World of Warcraft from about 2004-2014.

I picked up Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom yesterday and this game is great. I turned it on to try it out at 7:30 last night and next thing I know it's 10:30 and I played it for 3 hours straight and it felt like an hour. The game is apparently around 15 hours long too which is great.

The guy at Best Buy looked at me crazy when I said I wanted to pick up a new Switch game and it wasn't Smash Brothers. He said those were selling like hotcakes and he showed me the stack behind the counter and they had like 200+ of them still. I have no interest in that game though.

Grr... why doesn’t the Switch have a Netflix client? Basically every other modern device in existance with Internet access that you can plug into a TV can watch Netflix now.

I bought it with the full intention of returning it when I get back from my trip next week. I got it because I wanted to use wireless headphones on my flights and the Genki hasn’t shipped yet.

I just tested it out and there is a noticeable amount of delay on it. I’d say it is like 100ms-150ms, but it’s really noticeable to me when I was testing it out on Monster Boy. It’s noticeably smaller than it looks like in the pictures though.

Even if the Genki wasn’t coming later on I probably would return it because of the delay.

Got my Genki today. I'm waiting for some new headphones to come before I test it out though.

I had some Jaybird X4's that I lost at the airport last week and I went out and bought another pair. Those had a slight noticeable delay with the other bluetooth adapter I had and then I did some research and they weren't APTX or anything, so I'm guessing they would have the same issue on the Genki. So I grabbed some $35 bluetooth headphones on Amazon that are APTX-LL and BT 5.0 which should cause like 40ms sound lag which isn't noticeable apparently. So if the $35 bluetooth headphones sound somewhat comparable to my Jaybird X4's I think I'm going to return the X4's since they are $135 after tax.

whats the big deal with wireless headphones on switch? I haven't used the headphone output on it anyway yet, although I've heard it's good.
