Lots of good ones in this thread.

Patton (Not a huge amount of action)
The Great Escape
Enemy at the Gate (Very little action, but interesting)
The Enemy Below

Das Boot
Twelve O'Clock High
Downfall (new, out now)
Winds of War / War and Remembrance
The Best Years of Our Lives (post WWII, but the effects of the war are the centerpiece of the plot)

The Thin Red Line is the best of all those you listed in the OP IMO.

Saving Private Ryan, while a good show on a home theatre, isn't nearly as powerful as The Thin Red Line.

THR is Crap.
For realism SPR and BOB

Watching thousands of people get mowed down on the beaches was "realistic" but only for a small part of the war. You like the hype too much. The whole war wasn't fought on a beach or through a single good paratrooper division.

THR is realism in the pacific.

I dont care how many people like this movie but some of my Fav's are
The Great Escape (Steve McQueen kicked some major butt)
Saving Private Ryan (dont care wut any one thinks)
Band of Brothers (BEST EVER)

Has anyone seen Max? Its a Independent film, I think it is about Germany right before WWII.
summary:
"A fictional story which is loosely based upon the post-WWI period when the young Adolf Hitler (1889-1945) was an aspiring painter with a love for the classical periods. Set in 1918, the tale is based on an imagined relationship between young Adolf, and an influential Jewish art dealer and teacher, Max Hoffman, who did not encourage the future Nazi leader's artistic abilities. A discouraged artist, who later scorned modern art, Hitler's interests turn elsewhere--to hatred of Jews, and to Germany's questionable future. The story presents the argument--could one teacher's failure to encourage a young man to pursue his artistic endeavors be part of the root of the terror that came? Would the Holocaust have been prevented if Adolf Hitler had never stopped painting--and thus, was able to channel his creative energy?"

Anyone see that new movie called Downfall (Der Untergang). Good movie from the german perspective!

Playing in select theaters! (with english subs)

official website | imdb

It seems to be out on DVD already! (region 2)

as the OP, it was actually an 'alright' movie. Not good, but alright.

🙂

I don't find many movies awful!

I'll second "A Bridge Too Far" it was a great movie. Old movie but worth watching if you are into WWII like I am. As far as SPR is concerned, I thought it was a great movie. It may not be a perfect portrayal of the Normandy Invasion but it's close.

No need to repost what people already mentioned, but...

I remember seeing a movie in history channel about some invinsible german tank group that had a nice run taking out little sherman tanks, but eventually ran out of gas... Anyone one know what the name of that movie is?
