Hornitos is good but not great. For the price its a good value, but the quality is not as good as something in the 40$ range. That said, Hornitos does pass my minimum bar for what constitutes a quality tequilia; you will enjoy sipping it, neat, at room temperature. I would recommend this tequilia if you are going to serve it to people that may want to mix it, or shoot it. If you and your friend are going to sip it, then go ahead and spend the extra 15$ and get a top shelf line.

Chinaco is good stuff.

I have had many silvers that taste better than the aged stuff.

BTW, I have had
BTW, you have had what?

Any certain reason you like the silvers better?

OK, Hornitos, being cheaper, will be something good to share with friends. :) Along with Cazadores.

anxi80, I wish they sold liquor at grocery stores here. And being in TN, we can't buy any from mail order stores either. I wonder if I bought one off ebay, if it'd make it through the mail though.

rstove02, thanks for the tip on Casa Noble. Looks like I'll have a little drive to get it by the bottle here in TN (can get it closer by the drink). The US distributor also distributes Cabo Wabo.

Montezuma tequila? Isn't that the cheapest you can buy?

try a silver first, save a bit of it to compare to an anejo. flavor will be more complex, but not necessarily 'better'. going between brands makes it all the more complicated. luckily, all the top shelf brands are really good so you can look forward to a lifetime of tasting. :)

Anejo will be more complex, or silver?

(OP updated too)

I noticed Jose Cuervo Tradicional is 100% blue agave, as is the Reserva. Are these the same tequila's other than the aging? How do they compare to the expensive stuff?

Although my bottle of 1800 doesn't say 100% agave, the 1800 website says their Silver, Reposado, and Anejo are all 100% agave. The 1800 website seems to say these (all three?) are new for 2004. So is what I have by the same company, and is what these were before the change? My bottle is a year or two old, and it's not shown on the website. My bottle says distilled by Los Camichines, imported and bottled by Heublein (Heublein Inc. imports Jose Quervo), but the website says Agavera Camichines instead (which BTW seems to be owned by Skyy). This says something about Quervo changing their name to Agavera Camichines in Aug. 2003.
This says "Jose Cuervo 1800 anejo- Not to be confused with Cuervo 1800!"
Actually after looking at my bottle, it says Reserva, 1800, and Repasado, but doesn't even say Quervo.
My bottle. Like this too. I'm confused.

Someone mentioned earlier that Porfidio is no longer available in the US, but considering this company says they're the official importer, it looks like maybe it will be again soon.(?) Though if they're not importing it now, how are they the official importer??

Sauza also has a Galardon tequila that's 100% agave. Anyone tried it? Why is it not on the Sauza's website?

How does Corazon compare to the other expensive ones?

Can't find a website for Centenario, or El Conquistador.

Anyone tried any of these?:
Don Eduardo, Penca Azul, Siete Leguas, Nacional, 1921 Reserva, Casta, Lapiz (meaning pencil?!), Rio de Plata, Dos Reales, El Tesoro de Don Felipe, Centinela, Cabrito, Jaime Rosales, Espolon, Real Hacienda, Tenoch, Hussongs, Las Trancas, Los Valientes, Gran Centenario, Mision?

An interview with Sammy about Cabo Wabo tequila (seems website has some serious issues right now) is here.

Yeah most tequila is made in Mexico.

But Jose Quervo Gold is
I urge you to try something that says it's made from 100% agave, like ones linked in the OP. :)

Stick with Don Julio, you can never go wrong with that. Besides, having a cabinet full of $50+ bottles of alcohol and drinking them straight (with a straight face...which you can only do with the higher end stuff) makes you look very sophisticated.

Ahh, another fellow tequila drinker, I don't feel so alone.

Looks like you've already got all the bases covered already.

Lately I've been spiking my tequila(Patron) with a little tequila liqueur called "Agavero" and just sipping it.

Lately I've been spiking my tequila(Patron) with a little tequila liqueur called "Agavero" and just sipping it.
I was in the liquor store last night and was shown a Patrón Orange Liquer that and told it was good. Patrón has a Patrón Citrónge on their website which I guess is what I saw, but the bottle I saw at the store instead looked like regular Patrón bottles.
Looking at the Patron website, I noticed another that I haven't before, nor has been mentioned here, Gran Patrón, which claims to be the smoothest sipping tequila ever (though don't they all?). I haven't seen it anywhere. Anyone tried it? Too expensive?

Anyone tried Patron rum?

In my local liquor store, I also saw Jose Cuervo Tradicional 750ml with a free nice leather bag for it. Check your store! Tradicional is only Reposado. Quervo advises drinking it chilled.
An employee there mentioned someone came in asking for Quervo Reserva de la Familia, saying it was the best, but they don't sell it, but would ask the mgr. to start. This seems to agree. Anyone tried it? Expensive! BTW, that says Tres Generaciones isn't 100%, but it recently became 100%.

Also the store had Casa Noble, which supposedly is hard to find (the store isn't listed on Wilson Daniel's (US Distributor) website). Text & Text
BTW, this shows Casa Noble Blanco for $45, and Anejo for $100. Ouch. You're paying for the bottle I think. That website also shows a 'Gold', which isn't listed on the Casa Noble website. What is that? Can a gold be anejo or reposado?

Looking around at prices at the online stores, it's amazing the price difference from one place to the next. Many even sell for much more than my local store. Though I can't buy any online here in TN anyway.

Good first post, normteke! I've always thought Don Julio is awesome, but I think I'm learning that there are others that are just as good.

So what tequilas have you tried? As implied by others, you're more than likely just unknowlegable about good tequila. Just like when you were 10 and said beer taste like piss.
Read this
http://www.cigaraficionado.com...ate/0,2344,743,00.html

BTW, the article above also mentions a Reserva De La Case Don Julio only availabe in Mexico.

Another great website - http://www.ianchadwick.com/tequila/buying.html

Anyone drink their tequila chilled? One of the articles says silver/blanco is good chilled.

Also after reading those, it seems 1800, Tres Generaciones, and Dos Reales were 'recently' made 100% (maybe in the last couple years or so), which explains my earlier question about my 1800. Also El Jimador (made by Herradura people) was changed from 100% to a mixto in 2000.

Need an answer here. My most recent purchase was Cabo Wabo Reposado. ~$55 w/ tax. It tastes so much like black pepper that I don't like it. I, and a buddy, even prefer the Cazadores I have over the Cabo, at almost half the cost. Did I get a bad bottle? The 5ths and larger of the expensive tequilas at the place I bought it from do tend to have a little dust on them. Is this the normal taste for Cabo Wabo's Reposado? Do the other two taste like that? Or do I need to be getting my $ back?

here is my opinion of your list in the OP edit.

Excellent:

Don Julio (only site I found)
Patrón
Cabo Wabo (tequila & cantina)
Cabo Wabo page on Sammy's website
Cabo Wabo US distribitor
Chinaco
Quervo Reserva de la Famalia
Herradura
Porfidio
Milagro
Revolucion <----depends. I had one bottle that was great, and one that was average to poor. I don't remember the labels, though, but I am sure I had two different varieties. So you get what you pay for.

Good:

Sauza Hornitos, and Tres Generaciones
Cuervo Tradicional (Reposado),

Average/Poor:
1800

haven't had:

El Tesoro
Casa Noble
Casa Noble US distribitor
Cazadores
Corazon

Thanks. So since you've had Cabo, did yours taste peppery? I do not like it. Are there any others like it I should stay away from?

Have you had any others that aren't in the OP list? I'd like to see them in your ratings. There are some mentioned on the last page or two that I haven't put in the OP list yet. Was debating whether anyone would find it useful or not.
Also, have you had 1800 since it changed to 100%? I would be surprised it's worse than Quervo Tradicional.
Same question with Tres Generaciones, since it changed.

Curious, do they have Casa Noble where you buy?

oh, i didn't know 1800 went 100%... i have not had that recently (like in years).

i don't recall the cabo being peppery. if you don't like yours, you can send it to me. ;) the odds of getting a bad bottle are really low. Oxidation MIGHT create some off flavors, but I would think that those flavors would not taste like pepper. Oxidized beer tastes like cardboard.

tres generacions and 1800 are both around 20$ bottle right? i firmly believe that you get what you pay for in tequilia, and those are likely to still be like tradicional and hornitos which are just a bit too edgey to consider as anything special. fine for margaritas though.

Yep, 1800 went 100%, as I mentioned above, sometime in the past couple years or so. I have a bottle I bought maybe 2-3 years ago that was not 100%. 1800 Reposado is about $26-$27 for a 750ml (fifth). Anejo about $30. I think Tres Generaciones is somewhere in the $30 range. I have all the prices at home. :)

Also, just to be clear, I didn't mean I might have gotten a bad bottle of Cabo from the factory, but wondered if it sat on the shelf too long. Can anyone else tell me how their Cabo Wabo tasted? Again, mine is the Reposado (blue bottle), which is the most popular, but I'd think all 3 have a similar taste. From all the hype I've heard about it, I just can't imagine it's supposed to taste that peppery.
