It's been a while since i've played a good RPG - like Final Fantasy III. I've never got into things like ever-crack or diablo II, but i'm looking to give one a shot. Any recommendations?

Older, but Fallout 2. If you don't like it, the PC-RPG and you were never meant to be. Also, if you need fantasy a lot of people rave about Planescape: Torment, though I personally haven't gotten around to trying it yet.

Real role-playing:
Planescape: Torment
Fallout 1 & 2

Lite role-playing:
Baldur's Gate
Jagged Alliance 2

Almost no role-playing (but fun):
Dungeon Siege

I'm playing it for the first time on PC right now. :)

Escpecially with HArdWare acceleration. It looks 100x better than software accel. And 1000x better than the PS1.

Fallout 1/2
Baldurs Gate 1/2 + associated expansions
IceWind Dale 1/2
PlaneScape Torment
Morrowind
Might and Magic VI
Freedom Force
etc etc

I'd definitely go with Baldurs Gate 1 & 2 first along with the expansions.

BG was ok but i didnt like it as much as morrowind.

in case anyone was wondering BG you have a mian plus a bunch of annoying people group w/ you, and in morrowind you are one man that can choose lots of diff paths, the story molds around you.

In both Planescape and Fallout 1-2 the story has many paths and several distinct endings. In both taking the evil path is much different than good, not just changing your party makeup or shopkeeper prices.

I haven't played Morrowind so I can't say if it's more or less open-ended, I'm just saying they are much much more about story and choices than BG.

I don't think FF9 was ever/will ever be released for the pc...or is it? Either way I think its a better experience to play it with texture smoothing on the PS2...makes the game look a lot nicer especially in battles

They are all ok suggestions. But lets not forget the grand daddy of rpg games. DeusEx. Need i say more?

I would say Deus EX is more of a "Grandfather" to the rpg-ish FPS games...but then again couldn't we say Kings Quest takes that title in using first person shooterish view for a RPG?

And I might get a hold of a copy of Baldurs Gate...if BG2 is old as hell it makes me wonder how old BG was ;)

One thing that hasn't been touched on I think..... :D

Games like Everquest and Diablo II are actually of a different genre. MMORPG vs. RPG

Sure, they both have "RPG" in them, but the play style is very different and distinct between the two.

Examples of "RPG" games include many that have already been listed here. These are games that are typically played by one single player in a progressing fashion until you "defeat" the final purpose of the game.

MMORPGs, on the other hand, are sort of meant to never have a true "finish" or "ending". Instead they are meant to provide as much entertainment as you can get out of them doing many different things to your taste. Here, you interact with hundreds (or thousands) of other players all playing the same game as you in an online environment - you form up teams with each other to fight monsters or to achieve a common goal. Games like this would include:

Ultima Online
Everquest
Asheron's Call
Asheron's Call II
Dark Age of Camelot
Star Wars Galaxies
etc...

(I've missed quite a few but that's just an example list.. :) ).

It all depends on what you want to do whether you choose from one genre or the other (just remember that they are not exactly in the same category.. :) ) ... or if you don't choose any at all! :D

There's a fix out there for running FF7 in WinXP, I have a copy of it somewhere. If anyone needs it, drop me a PM/email and I'll host it.

Planescape: Torment. A MUST HAVE. This, and the two Fallouts are the foundation of a PC RPG shelf :)
