nVidia might be wrong and all. But this is not how you solve it. It only makes sure you burn more bridges. And why Linux marketshare is what it is.
 
If Nvidia is this bad what are his opinions of AMD? And I guess the question becomes what graphics card works well with Linux if Nvidia and AMD suck? Intel? What a joy.

Edit:After reading the article. It sounds like he has sour grapes Nvidia doesnt provide an open source driver. So the OPs quote is a bit misleading. Nvidia's closed source driver is considered pretty good.

Linux and AMD are in bed together... they both support the FOSS ideology, while Nvidia supports proprietary bullshit.

AMD is sympathetic to Linux's cause... they just don't have the resources Nvidia does.

They've had 10+ years to open up more to Linux kernel developers, I think Linus' statements are pretty tame actually. Linus has actually refrained from being critical of closed kernel drivers until this very public statement.

AMD use to have close-drivers until recently.. and compared to Nvidia.. their support is elementary.

Do you even realize and understand who Linus Torvolds is? He's legendary in the software world and is the chief architect of the linux kernel. So i'd say linux does evolve around him.

Yet again, others posters bash AMD since that is somehow related to how Torvolds views nvidia. How is that even relevant? Interesting, very interesting.

1) Intelligently point out that nvidia has good closed source drivers
2) Discuss the relevance of open source software
3) Most retarded option - bash AMD instead of making an intelligent argument on nvidias behalf 🙄

I know who he is. But what he is doing is very damaging. If Linux only evolves around Linus. Then what happens when Linus aint there anymore? His behavious is very destructive, specially towards Linux.
 
Linus was actually one of the few holding back the tide on closed drivers. You would have thought companies would be willing to help him out a bit in order to slow or prevent Linux development heading away from them. Seems they will now be implementing the naming and shaming of drivers in the Linux error system.

I wouldn't call giving hardware makers 8+ years (when devs started getting vocal about closed drivers) to show they can work with the kernel devs, destructive.

If you read what I wrote it would be relevant. Given what the OP quoted. If he doesnt like Nvidia, AMD is worse. So who does he like? Intel? Via? It wasnt a bash on AMD as much as questioning which GPU gets the Linus seal of approval.

That said after reading the article. He is whining about closed vs open drivers. Boohooo.

Nvidia and Linux are ideologically opposed. You're not going to see Linus happy with Nvidia ever, unless Nvidia decides to change their promotion of proprietary standards.

Prediction: instead of Oracle coming out and admitting they were morons about their idiotic suit against Android, they'll come out posturing and talk about how they'll be vindicated, and pay lawyers to take it to the next level of idiocy.

That author is either intentionally being dishonest, or just stupid. Linus is not expecting Nvidia to invest a single dime, to write drivers or anything of the kind. He is simply hoping for Nvidia to release the specs so that the Linux community can write their own drivers.

As for the notion that Nvidia doesn't owe the Linux community anything, I would imagine in Nvidia's view they don't, but Nvidia certainly stands to profit from Linux more and more going forward, both on the mobile and super computing side of things. So a tiny amount of reciprocation from Nvidia is not too much to ask.
