I'm looking for some earbuds as well. Here's what I'm looking for:

  • Don't want the type that go into your ear canal.
  • Must have a short cord (to play nicely w/ my iPod radio remote).
  • Must have a straight (not L-shaped) plug on the cord attached to the earbuds (I've seen some w/ L-shaped plugs that include an extension w/ a straight plug).
  • Must sound better than the stock iPod headphones.
  • Less than $100

Something from Yuin, head over to Head-Fi for more info about the Yuin earbuds.

Yuin? Is that some really cheap brand like Coby or J-Win?

I thought so too, until I read the reviews at Head-Fi. They're legit, and quite good.

Just looked at their PK series earbuds. Wow they look just like the low-end ($9 - $30) Sony earbuds. They all have really long cords though. I was looking for something with a cord less than 2ft. long (to use with my iPod Radio Remote). I used to have some Sony MDR-E888SPs, but wore them out. Those were great buds. They had the short cord and straight plug + sounded pretty good.

I actually just picked up a couple of EP630s the other day ($13 shipped apiece for two). Now I can actually say that these are GREAT earphones! (especially for the price I got them at ;)). They're great gym earbuds, and isolate pretty well, but go in and come out easily enough. A little bit undetailed, but what can you expect... the sound is bassy but otherwise great.

Ultimate Ears super.fi 3, very nice sound canceling and only $50 dollars on Buy.com if you use Google Checkout.

Am I the only one that hates these new type of earbuds that go into your ear canal? When I use those, I can hear myself breathing and talking more than I can hear whatever is being played through them.

the marshmallows just came in and they bother me. sounds really good and everything, but i dont like not being able to hear. i could even live with that, but they hurt my head--any time the cord moves or i move my head i can hear it in my effing brain. prolly gonna return them and get something else.

Try wearing them so the cable comes out up instead of down and let the cable hang behind your ear. That's supposed to help with the movement noise.

If that's the case, the Yuin earbuds are pretty much your only choice for a decent, non-crappy-sounding pair of earbuds. I believe PK3s are the cheapest.

ipod headphones can be considered good for many people...

I did a lot of research and ended up with the Ultimate Ears Super.Fi 3 Studios, same price point ($65 on Amazon).

Honestly, I'd stick with Koss' The Plugs for <$20 if I wasn't going to spend that much. They stay in your ears, they sound just fine, and they're very comfortable.

Does anyone know why all of these "canalphones" are so loud? By loud, I mean they seem to amplify "internal sounds" like your own breathing, coughing, swallowing etc. and when something touches the headphone's cord that sound is made through the canalphones too.

Ever put your head down on a wooden table and have someone bang on the other end? It's just like that, except in this case, the "table" is the cable of the canalphone/IEM and the sounds are being transferred directly to your ear canal.

So why does everyone like these canalphones so much? All the sounds that get in through the canalphones' cords and all my "internal sounds" just make the canalphone experience sub-par compared to regular earbuds.

Sometimes people just deal with it. There are a few ways to reduce microphonics (what this effect is called)
1) loop the cable up and around the back of your ear
2) clip the cable to your shirt somehow (some canalphones/IEMs come with clips for this purpose)

Either that or people want the isolation more than they dislike microphonics. The sound quality of canalphones/IEMs blow most earbuds away, too. I can't stand earbuds, they sound too horrible to listen to for more than two minutes at a time.

buying these (and hopefully returning them when i get home) has taught me that i really dont give a fuck. as long as those things aren't jammed into my ear pretty much anything sounds decent. hell, i dont even mind the ipod earbuds. i would buy them if they werent 30 bucks. btw aflac, earbuds really do sound pretty nice, it just really really irritates me. i was so disconcerted the rest of that day lol.

That being said, is there anything SIMILAR or BETTER than the ipod earbuds that are $20 bucks or lower?

also, does anyone know if Circuit City will accept returns w/o a receipt?

I'd rather not be isolated than be listening to the microphonics that come with these canalphones. Kazaam, have you looked at the Sony E888's or ED31's? They're older Sony earbuds and are still pretty easy to find. They sound pretty good to me and don't cost so much.

Yes, those are decent as well. I've seen them for ~$9.00 at Office Depot and I think Wal-Mart.

The Sennheiser MX earbuds are supposed to be pretty decent earbuds as well. They were the recommendation at Head-Fi for people looking for only earbuds (no canalphones or IEMs) until the Yuins showed up.

i was looking at the sennheiser mx's but i hear that its easy to lose the foam covering and it actually makes a diff. so you need it. I would DEFINITELY lose that often. I guess those are out. Might try out those really cheap sony's. Would they be better than stock iPod earbuds?
