good dim sum

Any place with a large contingent of Chinese people.
If you have to wait an hour to get in, that's a good sign.

And WTH do you need english speaking waiters for at dim sum? Just point at what you think looks good.

IMO most dimsums i've tried in chinatowns SUCK, too much fat and medicore quality at best. Of course i haven't tried the top restaurants but if you want chinese food, go to a chinese speaking place.

or not... china and hong kong reminds me of SARS

Which chinatowns have you been to?
Chinatown in LA and SF have VERY good dim sum, but you have to know where to look. If you go to some sketchy second rate dive, yeah, you'll get crappy food.
 
Hong Kong has the real stuff.

The best place we've found in SF is Yank Sing in the downtown area.
Their teapots also make nice gifts. But they break easily, so be careful!

Funny, with Chinese food I've found the opposite to be true. Restaurants survive on either the food or the ambiance and with Chinese food that's doubly true. The ones spending the least on the decor usually have the best food, the ones that rely on chandaliers instead of dead chickens hanging in the window are trying to sell the image instead of the food.

gaghalfrunt's mostly correct... being chinese i've eaten in a fair amount of places in chicago's chinatown, and the ones with chickens hanging in front of the store, usually serve good food anyway... theones with good ambience generally serve good food, especially the ones with the hour long waits....

btw, my personal fav at dim sums are those deep fried taro thingies with meat inside
 
i would think the "goodness" of the food is inversely proportional to the amount of english the staff knows, just fyi
 
Happy Puppy, Shakespeare yup i think so. The first part though heavenly morsels is what I think dim sum translates as, but we gotta check with our Chinese speakers for sure.
 
any medium to large dimsum joint has people who know english.

not that it matters much u know. u kinda point at what u want from the cart and they give it to u haha🙂 i'm not chinese enough to know the names of everything😛

 
If you hit the Westminster/Garden Grove area, where the biggo Vietnamese population is, a place called Kim Su is my personal Favorite for Dim Sum. I love their fried rice too. Its on Brookhurst and Bolsa (not sure, only been back home to socal like 3 times in the last 2 years)

Of course, thats kidna far from Riverside, and its not good enough to make me wanna drive half an hour. In fact, pretty much no restaurant is.
