Which chinatowns have you been to?
Chinatown in LA and SF have VERY good dim sum, but you have to know where to look. If you go to some sketchy second rate dive, yeah, you'll get crappy food.

Funny, with Chinese food I've found the opposite to be true. Restaurants survive on either the food or the ambiance and with Chinese food that's doubly true. The ones spending the least on the decor usually have the best food, the ones that rely on chandaliers instead of dead chickens hanging in the window are trying to sell the image instead of the food.

That's so true.. The best Chinese food I've always had has been at these small mom and pop Chinese fast food restaurants. I've been to $25 a meal Chinese restaurants and they just seem to be about the same quality food only arranged pretty on a plate. Then, it seems that 70% of Chinese restaurants have awful food and 30% have necter of the gods.

Of course, thats kidna far from Riverside, and its not good enough to make me wanna drive half an hour. In fact, pretty much no restaurant is.

I was just by Magnolia and Bolsa last night, but I was on a pho run. Might have to go back tonight for some dim sum. :)

Actually, this is quite true with Chinese restaurants. I have friends and relatives that own Chinese restaurants, and although they're not the best looking, they serve food that are better than the more 'luxurious' looking restaurants. If a restaurant is dingy and looks like a dive, but gets huge lineups and are in business, you know they must be attracting people somehow. The best Chinese restaurant in Kitchener-Waterloo, was a TINY TINY place by the universities... it has maybe 4-5 tables inside, and a single washroom that both men and ladies share. But man, was the food great. At lunchtime, you literally had to lineup outside to get the food... very similar to the Soup Nazi on Seinfield.
