I didn't have classes there either, infact there really aren't any classes there but I attend a lot of the tech talks that occur there as well as go to some of the professor/TA offices on the 6th floor.

what year are you? I just recently graduated, I might know you.

Texas has a lot of tier two schools, but the only tier-one schools are Rice and UT...and I think that while UT officially has a higher ranked engineering program, Rice is definitely a better school. Except that it is in the downtown of Houston....and about $20000 more a year than Texas is.

Actually Texas A&M isnt a slouch, and it is very much a tier one school. Its engineering is tied for 17th overall in the nation. UT is tied at 10th. Idividual rankings for engineering fields at A&M.

1st in petroleum engineering
2nd in agricultural engineering
4th in nuclear engineering
7th in industrial engineering
10th in civil engineering
16th in aerospace engineering
17th in computer engineering
19th in chemical engineering
20th in mechanical engineering
21st in electrical engineering

UTs is
4th in civil engineering
5th in chemical engineering
6th in environmental
7th in computer engineering
9th in aerospace
11th in electrical
11th in mechanical

I do also believe Rice's undergrad engineering dept has an overall rank of 20. A&M would be much more competitive with UT, if both were funded equally by the state. Anyone with the slightest clue, about Texas, Texas Government, and how funding in Texas works knows UT gets a substantial amount more than A&M, and beyond that, every other state school else gets ALOT less than A&M. Which is why Texas only has two great public universities.

A&M is a very good college for engineering. I just like the UT atmosphere a bit more, A&M seems a bit more conservative.

That'll bullsh!t. SHOW ME PROOF that UT gets that much more funding per student than TAMU.
I suspect said numbers do not exist.

Thats an understatement. A&M is a very conservative school, its one of the last conservative leaning schools in the US. But there is a slight liberal trend.

No, he is right beer. UT gets more money than A&M. Good schools are good because they have money to hire good people. Since UT tuition isn't that much higher, the extra money has to come from corporate sponsors/government grants.

If you want proof, just read the daily texan when new eduacation budgets are drawn up. the last time I read it, UT got more money than A&M. Part of it is of course due to campus size.

Just looking up the numbers on the .gov websites of Texas. Biennium funding for UT System is $1,660,000,000. A&M System gets $1,150,000,000. Yeah Id say $500,000,000 over 2 years is a disparity. Both schools have 9 academic campuses in their system. UH System gets $509million every two years, Texas State System gets $494million every two years. Then all the other state schools in Texas(UNT, Texas Tech, etc) get $945million to split.

If you want to break down numbers on how much Community Colleges get. Here we go.

Lamar gets $55million
TSTC gets $138million
All other Community Colleges split $1,630,000,000

calling it an understatement is an understatement. i know several cheerleaders-turned-hippies by way of UT, and a few hippies-turned-bankers at a&m.

I'm at Rice right now, but I'm a grad student so I'm not all that involved with the undergrads. It's not all that expensive, it's actually quite cheap as far as schools like this go. But if you want the real college experience (hot chicks and a good sports teams) I'd highly recommend UT, although perhaps those experiences just aren't meant for CS majors.

Rice isnt that expensive, because their endowment is one of the biggest in the US. They give out money, left and right. And they dont go on a need based assistance system.

so do they still have that pre CS thing where you have to apply after 1 year? or did they do away with that? EE department worse than CS department in terms of the ladies. a hot girl in either major is like a desert oasis.

Is that a bad thing? Don't forget that about 50% of them are females. :D

Texas women are hot!

Thats true, there are LOTS of hot women on campus. Unfortunately, as an engineer, especially an EE compE, you will never meet any of them. you will be secluded in the engineering portion of the campus. I think the EE building actually sends out anti hot girl radiation as the number of hot girls exponentially increase as you move further away from the building.

Do they still have that EE/EE Spring Fling?

EE - electrical engr (mostly male)
EE - elementary education (mostly female)

:D

<--- was electrical, turned mechanical after EE411. :|

for CompSci, Texas Tech or UT Dallas.

I go to UofH, it is decent, it is actually the best school in the state for pharmacy I believe, but I plan on transferring to UT.

UT, A&M (TAMU), TexasTech, UT Dallas, Rice University (probably best school in the state overall, has a great compsci program)

oh man, that would have been great. No I don't think they have that anymore. 411 is just the start man, just the start. You are not a true EE until you have pulled your first all nighter in ENS.

As a liberal arts student who actually sees these fabled girls daily, I can say with authority that the girls aren't that good..

I hear the school of nursing is where all the action is.

although after my exile in the engineering department, my standards have gone down dramatically.

I think we might be thread hijacking here....although I feel that it is important to detail the hot girl factor to a young student who is considering venturing in to a computer related major.

It's really very simple. THERE ARE NO HOT GIRLS IN CS, EE, or ECE. There are some other engineerings, but not many.
