IMHO the whole "high-end" pet food industry is a scam preying upon loving owners by guilt-tripping them into thinking "if I don't buy Science diet I'm a cheap asshole". For many thousands of years dogs ate table scraps and did just fine, just make sure the salt content is low and avoid foods that are known to be poisonous (IE: chocolate, grapes, onions) and you will be good to go. If I'm making hamburgers my dog gets one too.

Your diet would be fucked up for a dog or a cat and there is proof scientifically, but at least you give them kibbles which are balanced.

I feed my cat Meow Mix dry and wet food (in the little plastic orange cups). Can't afford anything fancier. When I checked, the ingredients listed meats instead of "by-product." Haven't researched it any more than that.

My cat has a weak stomach and throws up if I give him more than half a spoonful of the wet stuff at a time.

Sometimes I accidentally buy the patė. Cat doesn't like that as much as the other wet food.

i feed my cats wellness canned wetfood and blue buffalo wet food. we also do blue buffalo wilderness cat dry food. the cats are always drinking water either from the sink when im in the bathroom, or their water fountain. the bathroom thing was cute when they were young but now its a pain in the ass, but as long as it gets them hydrated i'll keep the faucet running I dont think i have to worry about them not getting enough water!!

It isn't directly an answer to your question, but right now, a lot of stores are running loss leaders on turkeys. Here, I've seen turkeys for 38 cents a pound and 39 cents a pound. I grab a 24 pound turkey each time I go to the store. Thaw it, toss it in the oven for a few hours, and bam, a snack for the kitties. They'll love you for it. And, it's certainly cheaper than canned food,

thats pretty awesome. my cats are so texture dependent though. if they dont like the texture of something they wont bother eating it. for example, they only liked the "sliced" type of canned foods, not the pate or even chunks. at one point they liked boiled chicken as treats, but now they won't even touch it. They wont eat the chicken bits from a whole chicken that i roast for my self either...

My local butcher grinds up chicken hearts, necks and backs for me at $2/lb. I use it supplement the rest of their diet.

I also buy beef heart and slice them up small as an additional raw meal.

I have to laugh... I stopped at the store on the way home from an event this evening for... dry cat food. (I just open the bag and leave it on the porch for the neighborhood cats. There are some pretty fat cats out there.) Turkey was 28 cents a pound, as long as you had a $50 purchase. ($50 is pretty easy to hit.) I'll stop in one night this week for another turkey. I don't use it to replace cat food; but more to supplement it. Though, if they're getting turkey, they're not getting regular cat food until the turkey is gone. I supplemented the dog's food with venison last week. My son and I each got a deer while bow hunting. After cleaning the carcass, there was still quite a bit of meat on it that I don't normally use, because it's fatty or has too much silver skin. So, I tossed the deer carcasses to the dogs. They were in heaven. Son just got another deer tonight, so I'll head over to his place tomorrow to help him grind the hamburg. I'll bring the carcass back & toss that to the dogs as well.
