I really don't get the trolls above that say everything should be done on Google. For one, many foods one may not even know...I didn't know about Walmart getting into the premium food line back only a short time ago (late 2012) and others because they are not on the common pet store shelves esp the 4Health brand.

I also had no idea (and this is relatively recent) that premium foods are as low as a $1 per can (~12-13oz).

I don't think many of you even have pets, yet alone friends.

We raise pure breeds - German Shepherds. We feed them Kirkland dry and cans. The dogs love it and they do good on it. We also mix into the dry some coconut oil. It makes their coats soft and the dogs like it much better then plain dry.

This thread title illustrates the importance of proper parenthesis placement. For example, outside of Korea and China, I'm not exactly sure where you'd find good cheap canned dog.

Almost all of Kirkland's products are top notch. They are AMAZING values at the cost of the low quality stuff.

Cats are carnivores. There is no meat/protein in nature that is not mostly water. Therefore, they don't really have much natural instinct to drink water because they should get it from their food. But, dry cat food subverts this and can cause chronic dehydration over the life of the cat eventually leading to kidney failure.

That's the theory anyway, sadly the research on this is not very good. But after losing my first cat to kidney failure, I only feed my cats wet food now.

Now, I feed my dog a very wet diet, but he is 14 and has bad kidneys. But I wouldn't feed this diet to a normal healthy dog.

Right, that's already been said and cat's have a very low thirst drive.

Cat's are also not just Carnivores, they are Obligate Carnivores. They get EDIT: (didn't mean to type grains) nutrients and other things through consuming their prey including all the organs. Despite people believing they need grains since mice and what not eat grains and cats eat them, it's not true.

This is why feeding a cat straight tuna or meat ends up causing them health issues.

read the link i posted above. cat diet is naturally more protein and less carbs. dry foods contain more carbs, which can give them kidney problems later in their life. also they don't drink enough water and the dry food makes it worse. you can help alleviate this with a fountain. not drinking enough water also causes them problems later in life.

when the cat is older it actually needs less protein, so you would switch it's diet up again.

doing a little research is good if you want what's best for your pet. i wouldn't just take my word on it.

My cat drinks water all the time. I don't buy the hype about UTI and wet cat food being better. I grew up with my parents having cats all the time and I have had cats in college and even now, 20 years later. Probably.... 10 cats? None have had any problems and have never had wet cat food. Spend your money on something else.

Safeway Priority has grain-free varieties of canned cat food. Cats don't need grain. Wellness and a few other companies make grain free dry cat food but it is more expensive.

I didn't use google; I buy the stuff for my cats. Try not to be so pompous; folks might mistake you for a prick.

When it comes to dog and cat food, being a prick is what it sometimes takes to protect those that can't protect themselves. I do this for the OP and his cat colony, take no offense.

If I'm looking at this thread critically, I don't think there was ever any question about Kirkland being the best choice. But at the same time, it is almost impossible to prove that nothing is better than Kirkland, because, well, prove it. So it's a thread that is destined to be left open-ended, and devolve into IronWing getting incredibly butthurt.... and mad.

Not the place for this. I worked in a Vet's office. UTI's are very real and a common thing is usually a dry diet.

Edited my post and clarified it, I don't know why I typed grain other than thinking to add the rest of what I posted.

I have never heard anything about Safeway Priority foods and there doesn't appear to be a nutritional label out there for them. Being Grain-Free is not the only thing to consider though.

I agree, grain-free is best...some cats (and dogs) don't like those diets just like we as people eat things that aren't the best for us always.

We went to grain free cat food as we had a diabetic cat and wanted to avoid any more diabetic cats. We found that the cats do better on weight control even with free feeding with the grain free food.

Added some dry foods as other friends have requested it. I still don't recommend dry food for cats.

Also added a few good cheap cat foods in cans.

My cats are going crazy for Grreat Choice and it seems like a good food.

um, can you, um, moisten dry food, with, um say a little water?

depending on the cats you can, I used to mix up some water with my cats' dry food and they ate/drank it all.

Now that I think of it I'm going to try my new cat with some water in his food and see what he does, although he already gets premium dry food

Not the same at all.

You can read up on cats and dry diets.

If the food is good it's not a terrible life, but they won't live optimally.
