Good car for the snow?

Hork

Senior member
My son took his mustang with him to Utah when he went away to college. Needless to say, it isn't the greatest car for the snow.

He's looking for a car for around $15k that either:

1) Is good in the snow

or

2) Is an older car that still looks fancy (wasn't there a thread on that here someplace?)

Any recommendations?

a FWD/AWD car or even an old VW bug would fit the bill if he just needs something for the winter with a heater or some cheapo civic would do fine also and the thing with AWD is i've seen too many people with AWD cars think that they can do and go anywhere because of the AWD. so if they are young, just a used winter beater especially cus of the salt

Subaru's are great in the snow. Go up to the mountain and you'll see tons of Outbacks, Imprezas, WRx's, older and new legacys, and of course my choice, Vdubs 🙂

Audi or Subaru... hell anything AWD that is somewhat reliable. $15k leaves a huge opening...

maybe more specifics? Does he prefer an SUV or a 4 door sedan?

Driving in the snow is all about skillz...not the car.

Canadians have a wide variety of cars; the exact same as Americans and we drive in the snow 😛

Front wheel drive will help.

you are all suggesting expensive subaru's. i say a jeep wrangler looks cool and is good in snow too, and i generally dislike SUV's. interior and ride is kind of rough though (same for older subaru's anyway).

for 15k he can easily find many subarus in excellent condition.
edit: and last i checked Jeep wranglers werent all that cheap, and boy talk about no frills.🙁

I personally think suburus are fugly but maybe thats just my opinion.

Why not an Audi A4 Quattro or A6 Quattro?

He drives a mustang so he probably likes fast cars and for 15K you might be able to find a S4 with quattro which is beautiful, quick(as quick or quicker than a Mustang GT) and All Wheel Drive and possess the ability to easily increase horsepower through a chip to make it even quicker.

You can find 01s and 02s for around that price. No frills = Less headaches down the road.

Nice thing about a Mustang is he'll be hard pressed to get stuck so far away from civilization you can't walk back.

If the roads aren't clear enough for a Mustang perhaps he should stay home and study.

Late 90's Legacy GT. Leather interior, sunroof, power everything, 2.5L 165HP H-4 AWD.

Early 2000's are good too. If you go late 90's, find out if the car has had its headgaskets replaced. These are a known defect and generally need to be replaced by 100K miles.

Any car that's AWD *cough*Subaru*cough* or if you can't get a hold of one, something with medium weight and FWD.

I grew up in upstate NY and my first car was a 1973 SAAB 99LE with 4 spd manual transmission. It was a horrible car in the summer (overheated all the time) but it shined in the snow. FWD, excellent weight distribution and it had ass warmers in the seats.

That car would go through anything winter could dish out except icy roads.

My vote is for a Volvo850 Turbo. It holds traction really well but tt does not have the best ground clearance. If that is a concern then I don't have any suggestions
